Let’s Go, Red Sox

It’s Opening Day! Alex Cora is back at the helm, we are looking at a full season of baseball, a hopeful post season, and fans are back in the seats….well, at least some of the seats.

Last year’s Opening Day took place on July 24th….so beginning the season on April 1st is already good start. We also kicked off last season playing the Orioles..as we will today. Let’s hope that is the last of the similarities.

I, for one, can’t wait to get back to Fenway Park!

Turn on the lights!

Boats on the Harbor

We stood to watch the fog roll around the harbor one day recently and got all these pictures within an hour or so! Quickly changing conditions but the boats are still at work like the Allison-Carol, USCG, Orion, Karoline Marie, and Nicole Jean.

Proud Eagle on Nest–Update from Magnolia

As you know, we have been watching a pair of eagles in our backyard in Magnolia spending time in a nest nearby. We had been hoping they were going to make it their home, but it’s getting a little late in the nesting season and our hopes are fading. They still come by and sit very prettily for visiting photographers. I heard from one recently who shared a much better shot of “our” eagle than I’ve gotten in their nest. He gave me permission to share, but didn’t want a name credited. I appreciate the sentiments and LOVE the photo! Thank you, generous photographer! Isn’t it wonderful?

Hammond Castle Museum To Offer Educational Programs During April’s School Vacation Week

Children of Cape Ann Welcome For Free Tours on Thursday, April 22nd

Gloucester, Massachusetts – Hammond Castle Museum will offer three days of events to entertain and educate school-aged children during the week of April 19th to the 23rd, better known as April vacation. The events are as follows:

·         Tuesday, April 20st:  Knights and Ladies: The History of Heraldry

This program will be offered in two sessions: 11 am and 1 pm.

This educational and hands-on introduction to the history of heraldry is geared towards 5-8 year olds. After a short introduction to heraldry, attendees will design their very own coat of arms using symbols and colors that represent each of them individually.   Following will be story time with a book inspired by medieval life.   Adults are $20, Children are $10. Available seats are limited. We do ask, given covid capacity restrictions, that only one adult accompanies each group of children.  Tickets must be purchased in advance.

·         Wednesday, April 21nd The History of the Medieval Arms & Armor

This program will be offered in two sessions: 11 am and 1 pm.

This educational program for middle schoolers will explore the role of arms and armor in the life of the medieval hosted by our enthusiastic experts-in-residence Scott Cordiner, former Museum curator, and John Leysath, curatorial director. Adventurous kids can learn how arms and armor were used and see real life examples. On display will be a number of helmets from the medieval to the Renaissance periods, as well as many other pieces that would typically have been used in that timeframe. This presentation will answer questions about the weight of armor, its durability, and why medieval knights had at least three different types of armor.  Available seats are limited. Adults are $20, Children are $10.  Tickets must be purchased in advance.

·         Thursday, April 22, Cape Ann Kids’ Free Day
The Children of Essex, Gloucester, Magnolia, Manchester and Rockport are welcome to enjoy a free visit to the Museum.  Guests will have access to the Great Hall, Dining Room, Library, and War Room which features the recently restored Eric Pape mural and the kitchen. Some sections of the Hammond Castle Museum will be closed to the public as the Museum is still engaged in a historic restoration of the original glass ceiling over the Courtyard. Elementary and middle school aged children living on Cape Ann will be welcomed at no charge.  Adult tickets are $10 each. Advance ticket reservations are required. Proof of residency is required.

All of the programs offered during the 2021 season are intended as fundraisers to support the on-going restoration efforts to preserve the nearly century old Castle and Museum for generations to come.  Tickets for these events and for general admission, guided tours throughout the season are available at hammondcastle.org.

John Hays Hammond Jr.,known as “The Father of Radio Control,” was one of America’s most prolific inventors and a protégé of Guglielmo Marconi, Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, and Alexander Graham Bell. Built from 1926 through 1929, and incorporated as a museum in 1930, the castle’s architectural style is a mix of a medieval castle, medieval French village, and a Gothic cathedral. It was custom built to encompass Hammond’s private residence, laboratory, and museum quality collection of architectural elements from his travels throughout Europe. Also on display is Hammond’s extensive list of patents, his work with radio control and his work on guided torpedoes for the military.
