Happy Monarch Playground

We came upon a lovely Rocky Neck garden which had attracted several monarchs. I have not seen so many monarchs together like this in quite a long time so it was a heartwarming surprise sight. Monarchs flitting back and forth between several tempting blooms as if they knew I had a camera:

Early 20th century Labor Day Parade in Boston | multiple open air buses for women of the Telephone Operators Union

marvelous photojournalist, Leslie Jones, Boston Public Library collection (date of this Labor Day photo featuring female telephone operators is unknown-circa 1917-34. Any guesses? Amazing despite WWI and the Spanish Flu epidemic that they would need to strike–and won–in 1919.)

The Schooners are Back

It was wonderful to have the Schooner Festival back in Gloucester this Labor Day weekend, after last year’s cancellation due to COVID.

Unfortunately, Saturday was Captain Carlo’s last dinner before permanently closing
American Eagle, Columbia, and Fritha docked on the waterfront
Columbia and her dories, with the Paint Manufactory and Cape Pond Ice beyond
Enjoying a peaceful sunset aboard American Eagle, down from Rockland, ME
The foredeck of reproduction fishing schooner Columbia, hailing from Panama City, FL
The Paint Manufactory (now Ocean Alliance), seen through the rigging
The schooners Saturday night, prepared for race day
Sunday’s Parade of Sail with schooners and spectators headed toward the starting line
Columbia and Roseway about to round Dogbar Breakwater
The fleet approaching the starting line; a Rhodes-19 bucking the tide
Gloucester’s restored Adventure, and Columbia, maneuvering before the start
Heavy traffic at the start
When and If (General Patton’s schooner) beats out Columbia for overall honors

Archie Enjoying His Day On The Harbor

Hi Joey, great pictures of the schooners this morning on GMG!
We had our mini-Aussie Shepherd Archie out on our boat to see the schooners on Saturday, it was a beautiful day.
He loves his polarized googles, protecting those bright blue eyes! Would look great on GMG!
Thanks

Final Margarita Monday of 2021 at Cala’s

We went to Cala’s on Beach Street in Manchester to celebrate Margarita Monday last week. Labor Day is the last official Margarita Monday of 2021 but there’s a fair chance more margaritas will appear in the blog posts before the snow flies! This time, I had the Jen-a-rita which will be on the Favorites List from here on out. Jim had street tacos and I had the bleu cheese burger. Each was tasty and may also become favorites. It was late afternoon on a Monday when we were there so it was a little quiet but the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. *The next day, Manchester changed their mask requirements which is a good reminder to check ahead whenever you are heading out these days. Things are changing fast.* BONUS TIP: Cala’s is in the Serenitee group, so you can accumulate points here too! Win Win!

It’s time to compete for the Oarmaster’s Cup.

Saturday, October 9th at 9 AM the International Dory Racing Committee will hold the annual Oarmaster’s Cup Race (solo dory race) to crown the best single dory rower in the land.  All members are welcome to compete, and the public is welcome to attend the races for some exciting waterfront entertainment!  (Rain date will be Sunday Oct 10th)

The course will start off the end of the dock at Maritime Gloucester and travel out around Ten Pound Island, then back to the start (approximately 1.75 miles).  The race dories are provided by the IDRC, but unlike the other races, this race allows individual rowers to compete head to head in a time trial with the best time winning rights to the Cup.  Refreshments will follow the races offering a chance for the winner to soak up the admiration of his peers.  Don’t miss this battle of skill and endurance on the water in Gloucester Harbor.
