Passing of Anthony (Bompo) Parisi

I read with sadness the passing of Tony in the times today.  He was a classmate of ours and the last time

I saw him was at our class 80th birthday party at the Gloucester House this summer.  I had a long talk with him

about our past association.  He played football with us early in our high school years.  He always lived on Poplar  St.

near The DPW Property.  I never knew his success in the fishing industry owning several draggers, Captain,

First Mate, and engineer.   He was also the Past President of the Gloucester Marine Railways.

I will personally miss our classmate and friend.

Haystacks

Haystacks are common wherever hay is grown. The purpose is to to let the hay dry in open air, and not become moist and rot. These haystacks were photographed by Gloucester's Charles E. Dennison. I think he was inspired by Monet's famous Haystacks series of oil paintings. From what I know of Dennison, the photo was taken in the North Shore area. He was also a painter. By chance, I was browsing Main Street Arts and Antiques on Main Street. There on the wall was a painting of haystacks by Charles E. Dennison! It was based on this photo. I bought it for a few million dollars less than a Monet. There are still haystacks along Route 133 between Essex and Ipswich. Get some shots while you can.

Get Outta Town!

hawk mobbed by crows

Whenever I hear a ruckus of crows, I always look for a hawk.  This hawk looked uneasy while being harassed by three crows as he perched in this tree.  He finally had enough and flew off, with them in close pursuit.  Afterwards, two of the crows were heard boasting about how bad they were to run that no good hawk outta town.

“I play better when the crowd likes it” ~ Johnny Winter. Listen to the interview now!

davewalsh_jw2

Earlier this afternoon I interviewed Johnny Winter and Paul Nelson, who is Jonny’s manager, producer of his latest album, “Roots” (which I highly recommend) along with his upcoming album “Step Back”, due out in April — and he plays guitar in Johnny’s band.

Johnny and Paul talk about their influences, the Blues, sound, performing, recording …  Johnny even tells us how he practiced screaming when he was young.  Plus they give us a feel for just how hot this upcoming show on Jan 31 will be.

Thanks to everyone who submitted questions in yesterday’s post.  Johnny answered questions by Ricardo Fernandez and Tom Hauck in this interview.  Listen below:

There are still a few tickets left to see the great Johnny Winter at Beverly’s Larcom Theatre on Friday, Jan 31.  This show will sell out, so if you want to go, get tickets here.

Farewell Good Friend

Last Monday, January 13th, we lost a good friend, Chip Norton. I rowed with Chip for 3 or 4 years, and he was a good friend of the gallery, as well as Good Morning Gloucester. My heart goes out to his family. Services are to be held on Monday, January 20, at the First Congregational Church of Rockport at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow. Flowers may be sent to the church prior to the service. The photo is of Chip at one of the last July 4th Lanesville Parades. He was a great guy.

Gloucester Rotary – Polar Plunge Feb 1, 2014

On February 1, 2014 I’ll be joined by hundreds of other Rotarians from District #7930 at the Cape Ann Motor Inn (Beautiful rooms available at reasonable rates! – ask Brad!) to jump in the frigid Atlantic off Long Beach to help eradicate Polio worldwide.  India was just officially declared “Polio free” a couple days ago, we just have 3 countries remaining!

image

Polio cases have declined rapidly since 1985, but the fight isn’t over. Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease, and for as little as $0.60, a child can be protected against the virus for life. If we don’t finish the fight right now, more than 10 million children under the age of five could be paralyzed by polio in the next 40 years.

No amount is too small – hoping the “GMG Universe” will help me reach my personal goal of $5000!
