That Gloucester’s motto in 1905 was “The place you come back to”? This was a summer hotel guide published in 1905 by the Gloucester Board of Trade. Many accommodations were highlighted, but I focused on the Brynmere on Cambridge Avenue. Looking at the then and now photos, it hasn’t changed much, although I’m sure they charge a lot more than $3.00 a day now, and you can unfortunately no longer get there by electric car and carriage.Â

Known as the “Longshoreman Philosopher,” Hoffer’s first book, The True Believer, (1951) was a new perspective on the power and danger of fanaticism and mass movements, both political and religious. His background as a migrant farmhand, hobo, and ultimately a dock worker gave him an authority to speak of the working class as few academics could. His ideas on the power of meaningful labor to enhance self-esteem and therefore positive societal change are still controversial today. Hoffer won the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1983.

Of course when I checked out my Animal I was a little disappointed. I thought maybe I was something cool like a; Tiger, Snake or a Rat.

I’m assuming and exhuming that we’re playing , so, here goes: This thursday, the one and only “Blue” Jay Appt, plumbing magnate and Duke of Accutane. We’re toddling on the thin crust of the bottomless pit here: let’s hope that the knock on your door is not from the fuller brush man. Jay-Z is the man, having paid his dues with Mikey O’C. and Jack Webb Plumbing. He singhs, he plays gritarrh, grittily, and he’s just plane fungh to be around. Plus his parents are really something to be admired. Hopefully, they’ll be there, too, dancing and helping Jay tie his shoes. Backing him up will be eine of my faves, Mr. Forrest “Frosty” Padgett, on concussion, skins, and heartbeet. No fool, he. Plays anything, anywhere, and always follows the basest, which means ME. Part 4 – Quality: Fact Checking, Liability, Good Editing & Good Writing
Although all writers should strive for excellence in all their writing this is of particular consideration for those who self-publish. Over the past few days I’ve been reading discussions on Amazon Discussion Boards and other Message Boards and one of the subjects that gets discussed a lot is quality. Because the term “self-published” has long carried a stigma of not-good-enough, indie publishers are struggling to convince potential readers that their books are just as good, an in some cases better, than those published by traditional publishers. Here is another page online to direct people to. It’s American Style online magazine where POP Gallery in Gloucester is featured. Would be good to get people to post comments on the article. More exposure for everyone, especially for the POP Gallery artists.
The page also has a link to vote Gloucester for a Top 25 Arts Destination in the US. Thanks to Kristine for all the leg work and letters/emails and calls she has sent out to promote this and the board and staff for their support. Keep going !
If we can interest editors and writers in major art publication to do reviews on individuals or groups of artists and exhibitions here, that is of greater value and target market for the artists. Many times an inn or hotel may sponsor the writer’s/critic’s overnight stay in return generates a mention in the article or just for the good “word of mouth” extended value. Eateries are also ones who like to sponsor a dining experience for our guests to Gloucester and Cape Ann and lends itself well to experiencing the true working character of our community that we cherish here.
Geo Tourism seems an option people are interested in as well. Discussions on how to create sustainable opportunities for artist to continue their work by ideas such as supporting cultural facilities funding for live/work space and their venues, by defining the very diverse target industries and their market will help to tell the story of their work. It’s the opportunities for, the stories of, the working artists and their art that creates a cultural destination and need for open dialog.
Sounds like seARTS is off to a good and exciting year. The annual meeting and guest speakers addressing opportunities for cultural economic development regarding the community development projects of the City should be well worth all those interested in attending. Public discussion and the artist’s and cultural community’s input to future vision with mutual goals and needs being addressed is the foundation seARTS was built on. I was thrilled to see Susan Silberberg-Robinson name announced as the keynote speaker. Now we’re talking business! Good luck seARTS 2011!
