Did You Know? (Madfish Grill)

That Madfish Grill is a great restaurant in an awesome location with a rockin lineup of music to dance the night away to?  Located at 77 Rocky Neck on Madfish Wharf in the historic Rocky Neck Art Colony overlooking the water, you can’t find a more beautiful location to enjoy lunch or dinner, have a drink (including locally brewed beer from the Brewery and spirits from Ryan & Woods Distilleries) or dance and just have fun.  It is also located near Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, so you can take in a little art and culture at the same time.  I did a previous post about the Madfish Sushi Bar, which everyone is raving about and you can see at https://goodmorninggloucester.wordpress.com/2011/05/25/did-you-know-sushi/ if you didn’t catch it.  Come on down to Madfish.

Also, Madfish is currently looking for help in all areas of the restaurant, of if you or someone you know is looking for a job and want to work in a really fun, beautiful spot, stop by Madfish Grill, 77 Rocky Neck and talk to Niki or Jeannie.

Measles Outbreak

VACCINE still best defense against measles

June 10, 2011 Chassea Golden Robinson, RN, MPH 978-281-9771

The number of measles cases in the United States since January 2011 is growing in a way not seen since the mid 1990s. There have been 118 confirmed cases of measles reported in the United States this year and many more suspected cases of the disease. As of May 26 seventeen cases had been identified in Massachusetts and of those, 12 had been confirmed since the beginning of May. The cases have ranged in age from 10 months to 65 years. Most of the cases occurred among individuals who had traveled internationally and of those individuals, most were not immunized. Measles is still endemic in many parts of the world and outbreaks are currently occurring throughout Europe. In France, more than 7,500 cases have been reported between January and March of 2011.

Measles is a highly contagious disease and therefore very easy to spread from person to person. When a person with measles coughs or sneezes, the virus may remain suspended in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours. Symptoms usually begin approximately 7-14 days after a person comes in contact with the measles virus. Usually a case of measles begins with a moderate fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and sore throat. A couple of days after symptoms begin, a person develops a red blotchy rash which often begins on the face and spreads down to the neck, trunk, arms, legs and feet. People with measles are contagious 4 days before their rash begins so they may transmit the virus before they ever know that they are ill. It is estimated that 90% of contacts who are exposed to a case of measles will come down with the disease if they are not vaccinated.

Approximately 30% of people with measles will develop complications. Measles often causes diarrhea, ear infections and pneumonia. Deafness, blindness, seizure disorders and other brain diseases with measles can occur, but are less common. Measles can also cause swelling of the brain and death, although this is rare in the United States. Measles is most dangerous for children under 5 years of age, adults over 20 years of age, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

Fortunately, there is a very effective vaccine to prevent measles. In fact, use of the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella Vaccine (MMR) throughout the United States has led to a greater than 99% reduction in measles cases as compared to the amount of cases seen before the vaccine was available. It is recommended that children receive one dose of MMR between 12-15 months of age and again when they are 4-6 years of age. Adults born before 1957 are considered immune to measles. However, those born after 1957 who may become pregnant, work in clinical settings, travel internationally, or are in college should have two doses of MMR vaccine. For additional information regarding measles and the MMR vaccine, please contact the Public Health Nurse at 978-281-9771.

The Sanfilippo Boys Will Be Representing The Heart Of Gloucester On Mark Burnett’s Expedition Impossible

The Show which is produced by Mark Burnett, the creator of Survivor, Shark Tank and the Apprentice will premiere June 23 at 9PM on ABC.

I spent the morning with the boys aboard their Gloucester fishing boat the Captain Domenic and we got a whole lot of exclusive video footage aboard the boat.  We talk about the show, we talk about commercial fishing and how it all works aboard the Captain Domenic including taking you inside the pilot house, the deck of the Captain Domenic and down the fish hold where you will see how they care for the fish once it is landed.  I’ll present this as a 3 or 4 part series of videos leading up to the premiere of the show so stay tuned to GMG for all the updates and a ton of pictures of our hometown heros!

Who else is going down in the fish hold to get you guys the inside scoop? 🙂

Did You Know? (Stairway to Heaven)

Photos by E.J. Lefavour

That climbing stairs is great exercise, and can lead you to some amazing places?  Think stairway to Heaven.  To reach Elynn Kröger’s gallery, you have to climb these stairs, but the journey is one well worth taking.  Elynn’s work is exquisite, masterfully executed, and something you do not want to miss.  In addition to her larger scale paintings, she has a wonderful offering of hand painted cards, smaller paintings and really cool block wood paintings.  A native of Massachusetts, Elynn Kröger has sold and exhibited her work internationally for the past 35 years. Intuitive, gestural, calligraphic, spatial, and organic, her paintings and drawings are a magical crossover between abstract and realism. Her gallery at 15 Rocky Neck, where she has been located for ten years, is open year round.  If you park in the lot at the beginning of Rocky Neck, Elynn’s Gallery is up the stairs, above L.A. Dahlmer’s Gallery, in the first building on the right.  Make sure you stop there first, so you don’t have the excuse of being too tired at the end of your Rocky Neck adventure.

Did You Know? (The Rudder)

Photos by E.J. Lefavour

That Evie Parsons first started her restaurant business in this location across from Sailor Stan’s, where she ran a chowder house before moving to the Rudder’s current location at 73 Rocky Neck in 1957?  Like the GMG team, Evie was a salty character who told stories in pig latin, often stood on her head in the restaurant, and never censored what she said.  When she passed, her daughters, Paula Parsons and Susan Baker took over running the business for a few years, and then 13 years ago, sold The Rudder to current proprietoress Attaya sisters, Jeannie Boyland and Ginger Attaya.  The building where the Rudder now operates was orginally a fish packing establishment where the fish landed by boat and were salted and packed in barrels for shipment.  The floor above was a sail loft until the early 19th century, when it was converted into artists’ studios which housed many of America’s famous painters.  The Rudder serves only the freshest and best lobsters from Capt. Joe & Sons, as well as a host of fresh appetizers and entrees, prepared by Executive Chef, Chris Wheeler.  Famous for extraordinarily fresh ingredients enhanced by inspired preparation, The Rudder has become known as one of the Boston areas finest restaurants — with a creative and affordable menu. Enjoy fine waterfront dining at the Rudder on Rocky Neck in the heart of America’s original seaport.  You can find The Rudder, located at 73 Rocky Neck Ave., by looking for the monkey and iconic waiter stationed outside.  This fellow was once stolen, but subsequently recovered and returned to his rightful place. Visit http://www.rudderrestaurant.com/ for detailed info about their hours of operation, to view their menu, learn about having a private party at The Rudder, arriving by boat for dinner, directions, reviews and more.   The Rudder is a first-class restaurant, situated on one of the prettiest spots on Cape Ann, in the historic Rocky Neck Art Colony.   I had the opportunity to eat  at The Rudder recently (courtesy of Bob and Alma), and the food, service and ambiance were excellent.   Whether you are visiting or live here, you need to treat yourself to dinner at The Rudder.

Bout #1

Boston Massacre vs Gotham Girls

Boston versus New York rivalry is as old as time, and the roller derby world is no different. Boston last met Gotham at the 2010 East Coast Extravaganza, where they shocked the WFTDA world and the Gotham Girls by hanging with the perennial power house for 60 minutes of hard-hitting derby. With a thrilling new squad, the Massacre is hoping to finally exact revenge for season for season of blow-outs.

Bout #2

Nutcrackers vs Wicked Pissahs

In their first meeting back in March, the Pissahs beat the Nuts by over 100 points. But since then, the Nuts played two incredible close games against the Cosmos, and the Cosmos gave the Pissahs a serious run for their money in April. That may mean this game could be a nailbiter, with the Nuts pulling out their first win of the season over a team that’s been undefeated since February 2010.

My TURN! Cute Baby Ducks!

We have a Vernal pond in our backyard. It’s a good and a Bad thing.

The good; Lots of interesting wildlife!

The Bad: Your not allowed to do anything within 50 feet of it.

Every year we have a family of Mallard Ducks and Ducklings. Last year it was the first year since we’ve been here that any of the ducklings have survived. Foxes, Minx’s and other predators have had their way with them. The two survivors have returned. They are both males. I’m sure next year they will bring back their spouses. I’ll keep you updated. Here are some photos of the ducklings there are 7 or 8 so far.

Are You an American Suffering from Dishabille?

dis·ha·bille/ˌdisəˈbēl/ Noun: The state of being only partly or scantily clothed

I was lying in bed, half asleep, when a word entered my mind. Dishabille. I could spell it, I could pronounce it, but I had no idea what it meant. Dishabille, dishabille, dishabille, I repeated over and over again. A nice departure from counting sheep and just as effective.

When I woke up the next morning I looked up the meaning of dishabille. And damned if it didn’t mean exactly what I’ve been thinking about lately. Maybe the word entered my brain, subconsciously, as I made my way in various public spheres, witnessing the annual Shedding of the Clothes that arrives with warmer weather. Seeing the abrupt nakedness of people who should never be publicly unclothed — which is nearly all of us, frankly — is a bit of a shock. It’s almost enough to make one hate summer. Now I’m not talking about the beach. Unfortunately swimming, or potential swimming, hovers over any beach trip no matter how unrelated it actually is to what you are doing at the beach, and gives near-nakedness a sort of legitimacy. I’m talking about everything else. Up to and including: trips to the hardware store, the grocery store, the post office, Wal-mart, and the mailbox. Another category that might seem to warrant or justify near-nakedness: recreational activities (no, not that kind of recreation). As in, an afternoon at a park or a zoo. Think lying on the grass means you can wear those shorts and that tank top? Then you’re wrong. It does not. Unless you can actually fit in those shorts and that tank top without spilling over the sides, through the arm holes and over the top. If you need to call in reinforcements to stay in your clothes, then don’t wear those clothes.

Why am I saying this? ( 1) Because somebody needs to.  (2) For my own sake. I’m one of the approximately 95% of Americans who should not be wearing shorts. (3) For your sake. I’m one of the approximately 95% of Americans who should not be wearing shorts. (4) Because I love America. And we are embarrassing ourselves here.

Just in time for the 4th of July holiday, I think we need to re-think what it means to be truly patriotic. If you love your Country, cover yourself up. The rest of the world is laughing at us (not that we care). Maybe Toby Keith should write one of his grammy-winning songs about it, something like “God Bless the Land of the Free-of-Shorts”. Maybe then America would listen. I’m not asking us to do anything really hard, like lose weight. I’m a big believer in the Freedom Fries and the gymless existence, if that’s your thing. I’m just asking red-blooded Americans to avoid living in a state of dishabille. If it sounds like a disease, it’s for good reason, because no one wants to be the victim of dishabille, especially not the people who have to look at you for the three long months of summer.

P.S. And please don’t use the excuse that you’re “too hot”. This is New England. Our ancestors cooked over wood fires in layers of clothes. All you have to do is get fast food for your meals — the least you can do is put on a pair of linen pants to do so. Do right by your Yankee roots.

Big-time dishabille.

Did You Know? (L.A. Dahlmer)

Photos by E.J. Lefavour

That in addition to being a wonderful painter of Gloucester, past and present, factual and imagined, L.A. Dahlmer (Larry) was a shipbuilder for almost 40 years, and worked on the restoration of two of Howard Blackburn’s boats?  After spending almost forty years building and repairing boats on Smith Cove, he has spent the last seven painting full time.  His first work was a 4‘x18’ mural of Smith Cove, which hangs on the building that houses his gallery at 15 Rocky Neck Ave.  He then proceeded to paint 106 oil paintings, concentrating on showing Gloucester’s history.  You will find Larry’s gallery and studio on the right just after the parking lot as you enter Rocky Neck.  Larry is a fascinating, salty character, who you definitely want to take the time to visit, and see (and buy) his work, which is very affordable.  His website is www.ladarts.com

“Kerans just keeps getting better and surer with the years…and the wisdom brought by time and experience plays right into his wheelhouse on his third solo effort: populist power-pop with a lived-in feel, in the vein of early Tom Petty, Dwight Twilley, or John Mellencamp.”
