Film Noir

Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. Hollywood’s classic film noir period is generally regarded as stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography.

Beth B Has A Question About The Mural In City Hall

Hi Joey,

As I was reading about the quilt project I thought about the mural in City Hall (I assume it is still there) depicting the young Gloucester High School students. I wonder if anyone has complied a list identifying the people in the mural.  It originally was on the wall at Central Grammar and was moved when the building became apartments.  My mother is in the picture, she graduated from GHS in 1935 so the mural was done sometime prior to that.

Did You Know? (GMG Goes to the Dogs)

That some people will go to great lengths to get their dogs on Good Morning Gloucester?  Laura and Perry Williams from Ohio have had a summer cottage in Gloucester for 30 years, and they drive here each summer with Lucy, Dylan, Jackson, Reggie, Ceamus and Angus, pictured here sporting GMG bandanas, which Laura created by scanning her GMG sticker and printing the logo onto pieces of fabric.  The photo shoot was definitely going to the dogs for a while, until Laura pulled out some treats, at which point they all snapped to attention and posed so pretty.  Pictured with them are Richard and Linda (unfortunately hidden behind Laura) Campbell visiting from San Antonio, TX.  The bottom shot is of Linda’s dogs though – nice sandals!

Third Annual Essex Youth Triathlon Aug. 6th

The Essex Board of Health is holding its third annual Essex Youth Triathlon on Sat., Aug. 6th for youth of all abilities, ages 5 through 15. This event is held to encourage healthy habits that our youth can carry into adulthood by instilling the joy of health, excitement of physical activity and pride of participation. Cost is $25 per participant, with a family maximum cost of $50. USAT membership is required to participate in the triathlon. This is available for a $5 annual fee at the USAT website. Pre-registration for the triathlon is required. Additional information on the triathlon, including forms, the link to the USAT, and the link to active.com for electronic registration, is available on the Town of Essex website, www.essexma.org.

Greenbelt Brings The Legend of Pale Male to the Cape Ann Community Cinema July 21

Join Essex County Greenbelt at the Cape Ann Cinema on Thursday, July 21st at 7:30pm for a special screening of the award-winning documentary, “The Legend of Pale Male: A hawk. A city. A love story.” The film is being presented as one of several Greenbelt 50th Anniversary community outreach activities this year.

Affectionately known to New Yorkers as Pale Male, the rare Redtail hawk becomes a magnificent obsession of a young Belgium photographer who tracks the extraordinary predator with a video camera for twenty years. The hawk and his adventures are a metaphor for triumph against all odds. Pale Male’s nest, perched on a posh 5th Avenue co-op, starts out as a novel curiosity to a handful of avid birdwatchers but becomes an international tourist destination – a place of pilgrimage. Then, one December afternoon without warning, in the space of half an hour, the building dismantles Pale Male’s beloved nest. In a wingbeat, media from around the world assemble on 5th Avenue to cover the unprecedented protest. Gathering behind Pale Male is an army of birdwatchers; movie stars, poets, children, dogs, and late night comedy show hosts. What unfolds next, as they say, could only happen in New York.

“Greenbelt is thrilled to bring the inspirational story of Pale Male to the Cape Ann Community Cinema in celebration of our 50th Anniversary year”, said Ed Becker, Greenbelt Executive Director. “It’s a marvelous tale, for all ages, that demonstrates the wonders of nature, even in the most challenging settings and circumstances.” he continued.

Cape Ann Community Cinema is located at 21 Main Street in downtown Gloucester with plenty of nearby parking. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and free admission for children 12 and under.

Living on Atlantic road we are seeing a good bit of activity at the liquid gas
facility. The large red crane ship, the large new tug boat,and several other

It seems everywhere I go there are rabbits hopping about lately?  Is it mating season?  Have the rabbits been getting extra busy if you know what I mean Winking smile ?

All those foodies who have been salivating over thoughts of dead bunny stew must be thrilled with such an abundance of livestock to choose from.
