Joe Garland 1922-2011 RIP

A Cannon Salute, and Farewell to Joe Garland

By Gail McCarthy, Gloucester Daily Times Staff Writer

“Joseph Garland, Gloucester’s historian, spent the last moments of his life in his beloved house by the sea.

One of the last sounds he heard on Tuesday was a cannon salute, a tradition he treasured; he would often give boats passing by a round from his own small cannon.

Garland’s family brought him home from the hospital Tuesday afternoon under hospice care. He would have turned 89 on Sept. 30. But he spent his last 90 minutes of life surrounded by family.

“When we brought him into the house from the ambulance, the (schooner) Lannon was heading out to sea with a sail excursion,” said Rob Carlson, his stepson. “We got him set up in the bed, and the Lannon was heading straight into port and we fired the cannon to get their attention. They immediately changed course and came over and gave a salute, fired their cannon and we fired back for them.

“About 10 minutes later,” he said, “Joe was gone.”

Helen Garland, his wife, said the bed was set up for him to look out at the harbor and the city.

“He was peacefully aware and was squeezing my hand right up to the end,” she said.”

My dad was a great admirer of Joe and although he loved Joe’s books, I remember heated discussions over city policies. After my dad passed, my mom and I stopped to talk with Joe as he worked on his sailboat across the road from his house. He will be sadly missed at the Schooner Races this weekend. It was always a treat to hear his voice announcing the schooners passing by the boulevard during the Parade of Sail.

To quote John F. Kennedy-
“We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch – we are going back from whence we came. ”

Rest in Peace, Joe. The sea will always be your home.

Night on the Neck Grand Finale

August’s Night on the Neck was even better than July’s Night on the Neck; but watch out for September, the Grand Finale Night on the Neck for the season.  Don’t miss it.  Back by popular demand, the incomparable Bird Mancini returns to Madfish Wharf (7:00-8:30pm).  September Night on the Neck, Thursday, September 1st 5:00-9:00 pm.

Also, Thursday will be the final day of Sinikka Nogelo’s exhibit at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck, so if you haven’t been in to see it, this will be your last chance.  She will be here during Night on the Neck, so you can see her too.

Live Paint Factory Demo Photos Did You Know? (Man Cage)

Some photos of the Paint Factory this morning with a crane and man cage being used to remove any potentially toxic materials from the roof and front (water overhanging) side of the shed of the paint factory.  I spoke with Crosby Martin of McConnell Enterprises, the dismantling and recycling company handling this portion of the project.  As you can see from the photos, this shed building section of the paint factory is in the process of falling into the harbor, so remediation is being done to make sure nothing of a toxic nature goes into the water when this building is dismantled.  All other segments of the plant from the peaked roof you can see behind the shed forward will be restored and maintained.

Did You Know? (Sista Felicia’s Bista Zugu Goes Global)

That my sister, Judy Wilburn, who first introduced me to GMG a year ago May, was intrigued by Bista Zugu and so googled it?  First came up my GMG Bista Zugu mug up post.  Next came up http://www.silobreaker.com/did-you-know-bista-zugu-5_2264811490122924046.  Silo Breaker is a search service for news and current affairs that aims to provide more relevant results to the end user than what traditional search and aggregation engines have been offering so far. Instead of returning just lists of articles matching a search query, Silobreaker finds people, companies, topics, places and keywords; understands how they relate to each other in the news flow, and puts them in context for the user through graphical results in its intuitive user interface. In other words, Sista Felicia’s bista zugu has gone global.  Cool!  There is also a strange, but apparently relevant graph that connects Hurricanes, Tropical Storm Irene, Zucchini, Chris White and Geneva with Paul Morrison at the center http://www.silobreaker.com/FlashNetwork.aspx?FreetextSearchStrings=bista+zugu.

Silo Breaker also reports good news for all chocolate lovers (my sister, Judy being a major one).  A research has indicated that a daily dose of dark chocolate could slash the risk of developing heart disease by a third.  So skip the broccoli and go for the dark chocolate.

Magnolia Road Race 5K and 1K Kids Fun Run With Ribbons for ALL The Kids!

Magnolia FrontMagnolia Chest

Hi Joe,

Thanks so much for the shout out to the Magnolia Road Race with JD a couple of weeks ago on GMG.  Time flies and the race is this Thursday evening.  What JD did not mention is that besides the 5K race at 6:30, there is also a 1K Fun Run for kids.  The cost to enter this race is only $3!  The course is short, easy and also includes scenic Shore Road.  All kids who enter get a ribbon and there are trophies for the top finishers.  We will also have an ice cream concession for the first time!

Also, we just got in our new race shirts and are really excited the way they turned out.  Saucony is again sponsoring the Magnolia 5K and we have their top notch dri-poly shirts.  I have attached a few pics also showing off our in-house model.  The first 100 5K entrants get these shirts and we are selling them at the race for $10 each.  All proceeds from the races, ice cream, and shirts go to the Magnolia Library.

You can sign up either at www.active.com or www.coolrunning.com
We have a few spots remaining for the free shirts.

I would really appreciate it if you could alert your loyal readers to this fun night!

Thanks, Randy Oneil

Cape Ann Hurricanes Recipe From Amanda Nash

Here’s how we got through Irene over at Inn Magnolia:

The Cape Ann Hurricane
2 oz light rum
2 oz pineapple juice
2 oz orange juice
1 oz Bogg’s Cranberry Liquer (replaces the grenadine in the New Orleans version)
1 oz Gosling’s Black Rum

Pour each ingredient in a hurricane glass (okay, we didn’t have any) over ice, slowwwwly so they don’t mix.  Top with a squeeze of lime and a bamboo skewer (all we had handy) with a couple blueberries (a nod to the Downeasters).  Looks great but of course ya gotta stir it before you drink it.
BTW, the fire extinguisher in the photo is NOT part of the recipe!

SV Linnet represents from The Basin on the New  Meadows River in Maine. See the sticker on the dodger? We’re waiting out the storm.  So far so good.

Joey’s response-

I’m squinting real hard but I don’t see no sticka.  Of course it would probably help if I knew what the dodger was.

Did You Know? (Bista Zugu)

In spite of the news media’s warnings of Irene’s impending doom and destruction, a bunch of hearty, hardy souls ventured out this morning for Hurricane Mug Up at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery at Madfish Wharf on Rocky Neck.  It was a surprisingly large turnout considering that it was a rather nasty morning.  As always, Ed Collard was the first to arrive and help get things set up.  The Chamberlains, Coxs, Jacksons, Osborns and Ardizzonis were in the house.  Paul Morrison journeyed all the way over from Rockport with a batch of incredible lemon zucchini bread.  Peter and Joanne Souza ventured over from Schooner Adventure with some equally delicious zucchini bread.  Isabelle and Breanna Jackson brought a lovely tray of deviled eggs that they made with the help of their mom, Talitha.  Those girls will be contenders at next year’s Deviled Egg Competition.  Guest artist, Sinikka Nogela brought some fresh fruit, and Paul Frontiero brought some Vienna Fingers (yes, Joey there are still some left and I will keep them no longer than seven days for you).  Wendie Demuth stopped in with visiting friend, Chris White, a salmon and halibut fisherman from the West Coast.  Joey’s sister Felicia and niece Amanda showed up with homemade donuts and a huge batch of bista zugu (spaghetti and sauce with meatballs, potatoes and hardboiled eggs), so that all present could be well fed while continuing to track Hurricane Irene strike predictions and scud to safety before things got hairy.   Again, note to all proper Italian cooks out there, Felicia did not cook her delicious bista zugu in that crock pot; that was only used to keep it warm.  I’d never had bista zugu before in my life, and now I’ve had it twice in the past two weeks (Felicia’s and Paul Frontiero’s) – I must be doing something right!
