Neal Stephenson Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

“Nothing is more important than that you see and love the beauty that is right in front of you…..”

Born into a family of academic scientists, Stephenson attended Boston University, graduating with a degree in geography. His third novel, Snow Crash, was widely recognized as the next step in the speculative fiction cyberpunk tradition of William Gibson. Subsequent works such as Cryptonomicon explore a fusion of cryptography, computer science and memetics, while his Diamond Age describes a steampunk world of nanotechnology and active literature.

Here’s My Message To The AFA

You can suck schweddy balls.

The American Family Association is organizing a protest over Ben and Jerry’s new ice cream flavor named "Schweddy Balls Ice Cream"

God almighty do people have to suck the fun out of everything? Can’t they just lighten up and laugh about it? Aren’t there way worse tragedies occurring in the world that could use attention rather than uniting the AFA forces in a fight against schweddy balls ice cream?

Last I checked no one died eating schweddy balls.

I stand firmly behind my large inventory of schweddy balls and would like to endorse the eating of schweddy balls for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

If there were more eating of the schweddy balls ice cream I’m quite confident the world would be a much friendlier place.

See I’m guessing the main problem for the founding fathers and organizers of the AFA schweddy balls boycott is the fact that no one has paid any attention to their schweddy balls in quite some time.

Perhaps if the men and women of the AFA enjoyed a little schweddy ball action instead of thinking up such ridiculous things to boycott, this too would lead to a much happier life.

I’m sure Ben and Jerrys could never pay for the kind of attention that their schweddy balls are getting thanks to the AFA boycott.

So unite normal people who can enjoy a little light hearted fun and go get you some schweddy balls.

Really if anything should be boycotted is any funding to the AFA. It’s a total misuse of money supporting such dopey organizations.

You want to donate to some organizations that can actually help the children of America? How about donating to organizations that help children with terminal cancer or fight child abuse, or drug prevention? I say the boycott should really be started on a far greater abuse and it starts with the abuse of the AFA taking funds which could be used for far greater good on something that matters. Who the fuck would want to attend a meeting where they can’t even appreciate the humor in an ice cream being named "Schweddy Balls" for chrissake anyway?

You can check out their fantastic records of how they pay themselves in this “non-profit” here at some dude named Kevin’s Blog

I’ve gotten the information below from their tax forms, which anyone can view for free. You can see their 2005 990 tax form here.  I have also summarized things at the end, in case you didn’t want to read all the gory details.

Let’s show these moral police bannanaheads that we won’t tolerate the pussification of America.
Who’s with me?

Here are some organizations that could probably use your donations a whole lot more than the ice cream nazis over at the AFA-

Video- Somewhere off Cape Ann- Who Can Name The Lobster Gear

Adam Bolonsky reports-

In a sea kayak somewhere off Cape Ann.

Name the waters and nearby islands: that’s easy.

But can a Good Morning Gloucester reader name the owner of the lobster gear the bluefish lure gets snagged on?

Should be easy: the buoy’s colors are easy to see, especially after the whole mess gets hauled up on the foredeck.

AUTUMNAL EQUINOX ON FRIDAY!

Greetings! Fall begins here in the Northern Hemisphere on September 23, 2011, at 5:05 A.M. (EDT). The word ‘equinox’ comes from the Latin words for "equal night" — the time of year when the hours of day and night are approximately equal. Wishing you all the very best during this crisp and colorful season!

Attention Alert Cape Ann Citizens! Stolen Bike!!!!

Jim Dowd writes-

Attention Alert Citizens!
Upon my return to our beloved island from my work deep down in the cubicle mines of Boston, I discovered my faithful mountain bike "Madeline" missing from the T station in downtown Gloucester. She was locked with a Kryptonite cable through the frame and front tire. As I am the only one with a key and she does not tend to wander off by herself, it is obvious that she has been stolen.
The picture enclosed is her when she was much younger. Today she sports handlebar extensions, black cabling, some stickers (Continental and Powerbar) wire water bottle holders and at the time she was wearing a removeable rear fender, which could easily have been discarded. Her toe-basket clip-straps are red.
I know not what hard use her new master put her to, he who undoubtedly tried to trade her for a few pills of oxycontin only to discover her 1988 vintage not making her worth much more than a TylenolPM, but in my care she was the sole means of solo transportation from my home to the station, hard economic times having reduced our family to a single auto. She was cared for and loved, had a dry place to sleep and plenty of green grease.
Won’t you be on the lookout for her? The dastardly deed has been reported to the GPD and no doubt they are working extra shifts to assure her safe recovery, but nothing supports our finest like watchful eyes. Her stickers and aftermarket handle extensions make her easy to spot. If you do see her you may take one of three actions, depending on your comfortability with confrontation:
A. Stop the rider, tell him/her the bike is stolen and summon the police.
B. Summon the police without alerting the rider, perhaps follow him/her to their destination.
C. Bring me their warm, still pulsating heart in an ornately carved, locked wooden box. (Police involvement not necessary)
Madeline and I thank you enormously. I know she is out there, close by. I can feel her.
Jim.

Did You Know? (Ziggy’s Dad Died)

That Tom Wilson, Sr., writer/creator of the Ziggy cartoon died of pneumonia at a hospital in Cincinnati on Friday.  He was 80.

Wilson got his start as an artist at American Greetings card company in Cleveland, working there for more than 35 years before debuting the character of Ziggy in a 1969 cartoon collection titled “When You’re Not Around.” In 1971, the Ziggy comic strip was launched in 15 newspapers.

Today, Ziggy appears in more than 500 daily and Sunday papers, with the character also featured in books, calendars and greeting cards – not to mention the rubber version one belonging to Violet Gray pictured here in our window box on Rocky Neck.

Wilson’s son, Tom Wilson Jr., took over the strip in 1987, so Ziggy will go on in spite of his creator’s passing.

Hockey Heroes at the Blue Shutters

matt and here for the beer

Joey

We thought GMG would get a kick out of this photo of the "hockey heroes" who were here this weekend at the Blue Shutters.  The Stanley Cup Champion Bruins have yet to take the ice for the coming season, but at the Blue Shutters Beachside Inn we already have hockey fever. Our resident Bruins legend, Matt Ravlich, was back again for a week with his wife Geri and her cousin Barbara. But what made the Shutters a real hockey town for the weekend of Sept 16-18: the arrival of the "Here for the Beer" women’s hockey team. The girls — who come from all parts of eastern Massachusetts — were here for a hockey tournament in Gloucester, and fortunately this overlapped with the Ravlich’s stay here. We couldn’t resist snapping this photo of Matt with some of the team — you’ll notice Matt holding the Blue Shutters version of the Stanley Cup, which we presented to him earlier this summer. We’re looking forward to having all these folks back again next September for more hockey fever at the Blue Shutters.

Magnolia Peeps From Terry Weber

Good Morning Magnolia!

click here for Terry’s slide show

As you know, Saturday was a beautiful day with plenty of sun and a cool breeze, so I took a walk around Magnolia with my camera. Everyone was outside–sunning, working on their yards, and smiling! At the start of my walk I noticed this busy bee…

bumblebee1

I also noticed a GMG sticker on the car of Bob and Lynn Bird, so I approached them and they gladly posed with their pooches: Willy, Asta, and Trixie. They’re representin’ in Magnolia!

doll tanning

As you can see from this doll’s smile, even she was enjoying the day. More pics in the slide show….
