Official Statement From Mayor Kirk Regarding Rebuilding The Greasy Pole

I reached out to Mayor Kirk this morning for a statement about the greasy pole.
Here is her response.

The Greasy Pole will be rebuilt. I have already met with members of the Fiesta Committee this morning and assured them the city will be their partner. It will take a community effort though. We need the Fiesta Committee, the Waterways Board and the city to all step up to the financial challenge. The Greasy Pole represents a tradition and culture that we cherish in Gloucester, and we won’t let it vanish.

Regards, Carolyn Kirk Mayor

Great and Worthy Things

When we are unhurried and wise, we perceive that only great and worthy things have any permanent and absolute existence, that petty fears and petty pleasures are but the shadow of the reality. . . Henry David Thoreau

Friend of the Blog, Lois McNulty from Newburyport and friend, Elaine O’Grady from South Beach, FL represent at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery on Rocky Neck.  Lois and Elaine met and became friends while they were in the Peace Corps together in St. Lucia from 2008-2010.  Lois first connected with the blog when Joey posted from St. Lucia while on vacation with his family.  Elaine is friends with Jane Gibbs, FOB Linda Coleman’s sister-in-law.  The web of connecting people through the blog is ever growing and expanding.  The day will come when everyone everywhere will know someone who is a friend of Good Morning Gloucester.

You Meet The Nicest People

. . . at Long Wharf on Jones Creek.

Chris and Barb from Pittsfield, Ma. spent a delightful 6 hours cruising Jones Creek, the Annisquam and Lobster Cove in their kayaks. They visited the Annisquam Light and Wingaersheek Beach. Chris and Barb experienced the full range of the tide, leaving at morning high and returning near dead low. See below.

Tolkien, 1916
Tolkien was born to English parents in the Orange Free State (now part of
the Union of South Africa). His father died when John was three and his
mother when he was eleven. Subsequently raised by a guardian, he attended
Exeter College at Oxford, served as a signals officer in World War One, and
worked as an etymologist on the Oxford English Dictionary, later spending 34
years as a professor at Oxford University, first of Anglo-Saxon and later of
English. Although he first gained academic recognition as a translator and
interpreter of the epic Beowulf, his book The Hobbit, originally written in
the 1930’s for the enjoyment of his children, became one of the most popular
books of the 20th century. The sequel trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, made
Tolkien first a cult figure and finally a reluctant celebrity. In 1971 he
was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth.
