Tutta la Famiglia: Photographs of Caffe Sicilia

From Paul Cary Goldberg:

Dear friends and colleagues,
For the past four years, during countless conversations and hundreds of cups of cappucini, I’ve been taking photographs of the people and the vita here at Caffe Sicilia in Gloucester, Massachusetts, America’s oldest sea port. (The caffe has been integral to this city and her immigrant population for more than 20 years.) The result is a collection of intimate images about my Sicilian/American neighbors, their culture, the city of Gloucester, and the power of photography to reveal the universality of human experience. To paraphrase Charles Olson, "Caffe Sicilia is Polis."
I’m now editing the images in preparation for the publication of a book of the best of these photographs.
In the coming months I’ll be sending periodic emails with photographs and updates from my work at the Caffe. I’ll include information about the design and progress of the book as well as some of the ways you can support this project.
If you treasure the Sicilian heritage and the city of Gloucester, if you care about history and the documentation and preservation of a unique culture, if you cherish photography and the arts, and if you’re enthusiastic about my work, I’m hoping you’ll help me get this book published.
In the meantime you can find me at the Caffe most mornings (and many afternoons). Stop by for cappuccino and a chat. If I’m not there ask Maria, Giuseppe, Domenico or Nina to run the slideshow for you. And be sure to try a sfogliattella, cassatini or pignoli.
A presto,
Paul

Discussing Alice Bliss At the Cape Ann YMCA

Hi, Joey,

Hope you had a gorgeous summer-y weekend.  We were swimming in the ocean! Wow!

Can you possibly help me get the word out about the Cape Ann YMCA Book Club?

We’ll be discussing ALICE BLISS on Wednesday 10.12.11 @ 7 @ the Cape Ann Y.

This is a new venture for the Y  and it’s so great that they chose my book; I’d really like to make it a great event for them.

Hi there –

Quick reminder that our next discussion is tomorrow!

Click here for the Alice Bliss book club discussion guide – it provides some great background on Laura Harrington as a writer too.

Here’s a teaser question from Laura to get your wheels turning:

I’m intrigued by what good writers leave out.  I believe that you actively engage readers by inviting them/ allowing them to enter the story imaginatively.  Alice’s physical appearance is never described directly. There are several hints throughout the book that allow the reader to put together a picture of Alice, but for the most part, the character is built through her thoughts and actions, her mistakes and her yearnings. Do you have a picture of Alice in your mind?  Did this make it easier or more difficult to relate to this character?  (My hope is that every reader has their own Alice.)

Hope you can join us!

Alice Bliss Discussion with Laura Harrington

WEDNESDAY 10/12 @ 7:00PM

Coffee & dessert will be served

Please reply to this email to R.S.V.P. if you plan to attend.

Thanks,

A Nice Photo

                    A Nice Photo

I thought it would make a nice photo;

a sailboat moored in the tide-flooded marsh,

accented and framed by deep green trees and vegetation.

But what really makes the image intriguing

is not what you see, but what you can’t see.

The backdrop of heavy fog is a curtain

that limits our vision to the present

and forces our attention to here and now.

We can only guess and surmise

what’s beyond this soft and opaque cloud.

It’s a nice photo, I think.

Sugar Glider On The Loose!

FOB Dani Lubbers Writes-

JOEY!

Last night Kurt and I were walking home from Giuseppe’s (amazing food and entertainment as usual) and I see this tiny squirrel running down the sidewalk. Naturally, Kurt chased it and it froze in the middle of the sidewalk. It was a SUGAR GLIDER! So – heads up – if anyone seems to be missing a sugar glider, we last saw it on the sidewalk just past Cafe Bischo. They are exotic tropical pets and they won’t survive the chilly weather that New England is bringing. Hope someone finds it! :(  -Dani

Transform Fitness

Through the American Council on Exercise we have pledged hours to help veterans and their families get fit.  Few words can accurately describe the sacrifices our service members and their families make every day. The stress of war and long periods of separation from family and friends tremendously impact their lives in ways most of us cannot comprehend. We would like to give back to our nation’s men and women in uniform and their families by offering compimentary small group training or group fitness sessions

Specialized sessions for breast cancer survivors

Carol Figurido from Transform Fitness is offering specialty training for breast cancer survivors. If you have had: a breast biopsy, lymph node biopsy or removal, – breast conservation surgery (lumpectomy), mastectomy or breast reconstruction then this class is for you. Any of these procedures can affect how you well you can move your shoulder and arm, take a deep breath, or do daily activities, like dressing, bathing, and combing your hair.. You may find a decrease in muscle and an increase in fat mass, premature osteoporosis and muscle imbalances.

  • Exercise plays a pivotal role in physical and emotional recovery for breast cancer survivors. At Transform Fitness, we would like to help you implement a suitable exercise program by:
  • Increasing range of motion and strength in the affected chest, arm, and back;
  • Increasing lean body mass through strength training;
  • Increasing endurance through a guided program of cardiovascular exercise;
  • Preventing lymph edema or frozen shoulder;
  • Decreasing stress and promoting wellness through education on stress management techniques.

Carol knows firsthand about the benefits of exercise for breast cancer survivors. In 1998, just as she was beginning her career in fitness, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. That diagnosis, surgery, and subsequent recovery inspired her to pursue her dream as a fitness coach both through personal training and teaching group fitness classes. During this time, she realized the importance of living a balanced life, both physically and mentally. Carol is ACE certified Group Fitness since 2000, FRAPersonal Trainer, Stott Mat Pilates, Indoor Cycling, Reebock, Coreboard, PACE Arthritis Instructor, BodyPump, BodyVive, and Pilates Coach certified

Studies show that moderate aerobic exercise improves cardiac health, stamina, and mood, and helps manage symptoms like fatigue, weakness, and bladder and bowel difficulties.
