Robert Hartwell Fiske’s Dictionary of Unendurable English

A Compendium of Mistakes in Grammar, Usage, and Spelling with Commentary on Lexicographers and Linguists

Read what people think of him and his book:

However curmudgeonly, Mr. Fiske betrays a bluff humanitarian spirit….[Fiske] wants to save [the English language]. And he knows that he can count on little help. Dictionaries "have virtually no standards, offer scant guidance, and advance only misunderstanding." His own flogging of Merriam-Webster’s is one of the many pleasures of this lovely, sour, virtuous book. — The Wall Street Journal

Word snobs and copy editors should love the Dictionary of Unendurable English and cherish it as a reference book. Those learning English can benefit, too. Folks who think they have English down pat ought to read it. Fiske will quickly force them (of whom I am one) to shed that conceit. This is, of course, a form of knuckle rapping. Fiske, to his credit, makes it a pleasure to endure. — Andrew Allentuck, National Post

Fiske, the language-obsessed creator of online journal The Vocabula Review, does not mince words. Nor shall I: His dictionary is one of the grumpiest, most self-righteous intellectual exercises I’ve ever had the genuine pleasure of reading. — Mia Lipman, Shelfari

[Fiske’s] documentation of brand creep is fascinating: Reporters use non-words such as “alleve” (a misspelled rendering of a commercial analgesic) when they mean to say “relieve.” “Abilify” — an antidepressant — has been perverted into a synonym for “enable.” — Sheila Anne Feeney, Star-Ledger

Did You Know? Pomeranians and the Fairy Dog Ma

The Pomeranian (often known as a Pom, or more humorously, Pom Pom) is a breed of dog of the Spitz type, named for the Pomerania region in Central Europe (today part of eastern Germany and northern Poland). Classed as a toy dog breed because of its small size, the Pomeranian is descended from the larger German Spitz.

The breed has been made popular by a number of royal owners since the 17th century. Queen Victoria owned a particularly small Pomeranian and consequently the smaller variety became universally popular. During Queen Victoria’s lifetime alone, the size of the breed decreased by 50%. Overall, the Pomeranian is a sturdy, healthy dog and incredibly smart, cute and sweet.

This pomeranian is named Paco.  He and his owner, Jen Nicol are my next door neighbors and regular visitors.  Jen is also known as the Fairy Dog Ma http://www.fairydogma.com/.  She is great with animals of all varieties and is a 100% reliable, full time pet care provider offering services customized to suit you and your pet’s needs. These include pet/house sitting, individual or group walks to park/woods/beaches for socialization and lots of exercise. Jen’s motto and belief is that a tired dog is a good dog!  If you need someone to look after your 4-legged family member while you are at work or away, call the Fairy Dog Ma.  You’ll love her and so will your best friend.

Community Stuff Tuesday

Recently, Matter Communications, working on behalf of the Chamber, invited Examiner.com reporter Charlene Peters to visit Gloucester for a weekend of winter fun. As Charlene recently started up a “destination spa” column, we included a visit to The Well of Integrative Medicine, on Main Street.  The writer and her husband had a wonderful experience in the expert hands and feet of two of the Well’s massage therapists – read about their experience here:

Ashiatsu Oriental Bar therapy offered within fishing port of Gloucester, Mass.

This is great news for The Well and Gloucester, as Examiner.com receives over 7 million unique visitors a month!

SEACOAST NURSING AND REHABILITATION CENTER’S HO-HO HOTLINE

This holiday season, children of Cape Ann have a direct line to Santa’s workshop through SEACOAST NURSING AND REHABILITATION CENTER’S HO-HO HOTLINE. From December 19 through December 23, from 3-5 p.m., children’s calls will be answered by Santa, Mrs. Claus or one of their elves.

While Santa, Mrs. Claus and their helpers won’t make any promises to the children, they will listen to the children’s wishes and encourage them to be on their very best behavior. The phone number for Seacoast’s Ho-Ho Hotline is 978-283-1515.

I heard Bobby Ryan Dropped Off Some Booze for our Christmas Party the other night.

I wish I would have known as I LOVE Folly Cove Rum and would have loved to have some but didn’t see it.  Damn.

But everyone should know that Bobby dropped some off for us.

Thanks for being such a great supporter of GMG Bobby.

Presents from Present

I spent the weekend with the girlfriends for our annual Girls Only Christmas Party. On the way to the party I made a quick stop at Present on Main Street to pick up their Christmas gifts.  We keep a budget of around $10 each and of course I was able to find the perfect gifts and stay on budget. I picked up each of the girls “Happy Clam” thongs for only $12 from Gloucester Oneseas.  They loved them! They laughed out loud when they opened the clam shell and found what was inside.

Here’s Sara and Dina showing off their presents:

Merry Christmas!
~Alicia

There really isn’t anything better in life than a happy clam now is there?

Christmas Sushi!

Some closeups of the sushi provided by Latitude 43 for the GMG Christmas party last Saturday. It tasted as good as it looks!

This, like all the other food and beverages provided, was fantastic!  And the conversation was even better.  Thanks to everyone for a great time!

Afternoon Delight From Skip Montello

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hi Joey,

Sometimes you get lucky while walking the dogs in the Rockport Woods. This small quarry pond simply came alive with the low late afternoon sun glowing blue-gold and casting a rippling reflection below the rock face.
