Dahlmer Gillnetter, Rough Rider, at Rocky Neck

This is a 1904 photo and an Acrylic, Pen & Ink painting by Bill Hubbard of the Dahlmer Gillnetter, Rough Rider which fished out of Rocky Neck in 1910.  Rough Rider was a 39′ gillnetter launched in Manitowoc, Wisc in 1904.  She was one of the first gas-powered fishing boats in America.  Bill’s great grandfather, Capt. Axel B. Dahlmer purchased her in 1906 and his grandfather, Capt. John A. Dahlmer brought her to Gloucester in 1910 to join the other “Michigan Bears” who introduced gillnetting to Gloucester.  Like Captains Albert Arnold, Gerry Shoares and Peter Tysver, they settled in E. Gloucester.  The Dahlmers bought the house at 12 Rocky Neck Avenue and fished their boats out of Smith Cove for many years.

The last photo is one I took on New Year’s Day at the Rocky Neck Plunge.  It may not be, but it certainly looks like a modified version of Rough Rider.

Did You Know? Joey is Back

Some people think that Joey is still in Italy because he is still putting up posts about his trip.   However, he is back.  See him here at the dock showing off the new improved Italian hand gesture skills he acquired on his trip.  His hands are just a blur.  Can anyone tell what he is saying?

MUG UP #1 In The Books

I could only stay for a short bit as I had to work but managed a few pictures and despite the incredible temptations of carbohydrate laden goodness surrounding me I stayed true to the diet and ate Kathy Chapman’s lettuce and flowers that she brought.

Theodore Roosevelt Quote Of The Week From Greg Bover

May 17, 2012
“Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”

image
Theodore Roosevelt, (1858 – 1919)
The 26th President of the United States, TR was born wealthy, but also sickly, suffering from asthma his entire life. To compensate, he embraced “the strenuous life” and was famed for his exuberance and activism. He was elected to the New York State Assembly one year after graduating from Harvard University, and became a force for reform in the Republican Party. He was Vice President to William McKinley and at 42 became the youngest person to hold the office of President when McKinley was assassinated in 1901. He is widely credited as the prime mover behind the completion of the Panama Canal, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating an end to the Russo-Japanese War. A life-long naturalist, Roosevelt was essential in the creation of our National Park System. His refusal to shoot an American black bear that had been tied to a tree created a meme that lives on today in the stuffed Teddy Bear.

Cameron Johnson Goes Freakin’ Fast

Caught Cameron Johnson of Rockport windsurfing before work Thursday morning, and he was screaming across the outer harbor.  He was moving so fast, I was certain he would crash and ruin his board running up over Niles Beach, but he had amazing control and could turn that thing on a dime and head back out across the outer harbor like a flash.   That had to be an invigorating way to start the day.

Italy Day 8: Capri

Took the Ferry From Positano to Capri. Beautiful ride- 38 euros for the two of us plus the one large suitcase we brought.

It is amazing to me how very distinct each of these places are along the Amalfi Coast. Each one more beautiful than the next.

Here is how I would rate them (even though rating them is totally subjective)
Praiano<Amalfi<Positano<Ravello<Capri

Rating them from least favorite to favorite might give the wrong impression that any one of them is not spectacular in its own right- they are all amazing places.

Capri is bustling with high end dining and shopping. The kind of shopping that is way out of our budget but is still cool to look in the windows. It is very active on one side and then on the other side of the island it is tranquil and there are long paths cut into the mountains that lead down to the sea.

I don't know who paid to have all of the beautiful parks and walkways done or how long ago but I'm continually awestruck at the beauty of the architecture and landscaping.

The people from Italy that come to the US must look down at us for not having one tenth of the imagination and creativity to create beautiful spaces that they do here. Everywhere. We have it in certain spaces but here in Italy the attention to aesthetically pleasing spaces is everywhere.

50s Rockport From Ann Kennedy

Hi Joey.  Welcome home.  A dear family friend, no longer living, was a geographer and children’s textbook author.  While going through old books in the basement, I came across one of his texts and discovered that the first chapter was about Rockport.  Thought you might enjoy the images from the early 50s, from the book, Ways of Our Land, by C.W. Sorenson, 1954.
