Gloucester Dog Park Entrance Pergola Construction Underway

Construction on Gloucester Dog Park’s entrance pergola has begun and will continue over the next two weeks.

Gloucester Dog Park, Entrance, dogs(Griffin, a yellow lab and Addison, a black lab wait patiently as their guardian Chris Fogarty of CF Carpentry Inc. frame the entrance pergola for the dog park.)

Before the school year ended, the students at Gloucester High School carpentry tech
department under the direction of Dana Griffin did one final project. They built the
boxes for the two sheds making up Gloucester Dog Park’s main entranceway pergola.
Then along came Chris Fogarty of CF Carpentry, Inc., along with Aaron Waybret, Bendan Fogarty and Phil Bazel who volunteered their time to frame the roof and pergola.
Greg Santos and David Dolloff of Glosta Builders also got into the act and volunteered
their manpower. Timberline generously donated materials and Precision Roofing is donating and installing the roof.  What a community project!! And excitement is building (no pun intended!!).

The Friends of Gloucester Dog Park would like to thank all of the above vendors and
crew for making this ‘roof-raising’ event a reality.

We are still in need of a professional fundraiser to get us to the home stretch and a
PR person to publicize each of our steps. So if that person is you, please contact us at
gloucesterdogpark@gmail.com We need you!!

And as a reminder, this park is being built Entirely by private donations. Please consider
donating. Make checks out to The Gloucester Fund, earmarked in the memo line ‘dog park’

HUGE REMATCH RESCHEDULED – Sugar Mags vs. Classic Cooks Tomorrow (Thursday) at 4pm

OK, you’ve waited patiently now for 4 weeks to see this epic rematch and tomorrow is the day — 4pm Stage Fort Park — weather looks great — and we have a special twist:  Thursday’s throwdown will help answer the question How does local seafood affect the health and diet of young people?  In addition to the pro judges (Lara Lepionka of Backyard Growers and Beacon Street Farm and Hallie Baker of Turtle Alley Chocolates) we’ll have 3 youth judges who will make sure the chefs’ creations are compatible with young people’s palates — a very tall order, indeed.  So bring your kids and get them to try the dishes too.

Here’s a video that Joey made of the last contest between these two culinary giants (check out the end of the video where Angela Sanfilippo tells you what to do with the head of a hake — delicious!)

And here’s the press release from Niaz Dorry of the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance, who sponsors the throwdowns:

Seafood Throwdown Brings Unique Partnership to Farmers Market
Highlights Local Seafood in Healthcare Industry’s Purchasing Decisions

Gloucester, MA – Seafood Throwdown, a unique cooking competition that highlights the importance of local seafood in restoring a healthy ocean ecosystem, is back at Cape Ann Farmers Market on Thursday, August 23, 2012 with a twist: focus of this Throwdown will be to highlight the role of local seafood in young people’s health and diet while showcasing the work underway to assist healthcare industry in shifting their buying practices to support locally caught seafood. The Cape Ann Farmers’ Market and the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance have sponsored Seafood Throwdowns for the past four years to raise awareness about why “Who Fishes Matters.”

This Thursday’s event is a rematch between Classic Cooks and Sugar Mags. Last year’s Seafood Throwdown winner Julie Ann Geary of Classic Cooks Catering will be joined by Justin Grandin of The Happy Taco food truck. They will compete against 5 time winner Sugar Mags who will be featuring Lidia Sands and Sandro Carvalho with owner Missy Hart cheering from the sidelines … download the full press release PDF here.

After the throwdown, be sure to stay in town for a night of great music at 10 local venues.  See the full music lineup here.

Our instrument panel includes Air speed indicator, Mr. John Hyde, pantywaist, jazz snob and loving husband, on keyboards, Tachometer Mr. Jeff Casper, the  friendly drummer, on what else?, wind direction meter, Mr. Bob Enik, on glitar( a new guy for us) and check engine light basest, meselph, on the dented fender bass. You might think I’m crazy, but you keep on comin’! This is gonna be a nite to remember. Come early and stay late. Recuperation’s our most important product. Alive music is best!

Oustanding music is to be had tonight. It’s not every day that Soule Monde comes to town. Tonight~ MinglewoodTavern AtLat with ~ Dennis Monagle Sessions……..be there. It gonna be awesome

Ok, so if you did not catch Soule Monde at The Sexy and 17 Years of The Open Jam celebration at The Rhumb Line last Monday night, have no fear. Because, you can see them at MinglewoodTavern AtLat  tonight Wednesday at The Dennis Monagle Sessions.

How awesome is that. Now I’m not one who is use to listening to music without vocals. Their music is like a whirlwind of sound so exciting and enticing you don’t need them. I got their CD  and had to go out of town so I got to listen to the whole thing. It had me dancing in my seat and slightly rockin my head (didn’t want anyone to think I was having a seizure or something). I bet my son Michael will know exactly what I’m talkin about. Check them out here or go to the Russ Lawton website.
I totally love the live music scene here and all that it has to offer!

Russ Lawton and Ray Paczkowski from the Trey Anastasio Band bring their duo Soule Monde to join the Bandit Kings- Dan King, Ann Marie, Renee Dupuis, Dennis Monagle and Joe Cardoza

Thank you Tyler and Domenic – Cape Ann SUP Rocks!

I have long wanted to try stand up paddleboarding.  I ran into Tyler a week or so ago and told him again that I wanted to try to carve out a time to go out on one before summer was over.  He said that he would be happy to do a Rocky Neck demo session.  Yesterday from 4:00-6:00, Cape Ann SUP co-owners, Tyler Knight and Dominic Olivo, came to Rocky Neck with a bunch of paddleboards so Rocky Neckers could try it out.  It was too bad that more people didn’t turn out, as there were plenty of boards and it was such a gorgeous afternoon, warm air and water with smooth waters at Oaks Cove where we went out.  I definitely want to try going out at night now on one of those lit up boards, although with my night blindness, I might crash into something.  If you haven’t tried paddleboarding, you owe it to yourself to get in touch with Tyler or Domenic and go out before it gets too cold.

Why does Fly Amero play guitar upside down?

No, Fly’s not upside down.  The guitar is.

If you look carefully, you can see that the thin strings (higher) are at the top in this picture.  That’s upside down from the norm.

But why?  Well, this question has generated much speculation over the years and Fly clears it up in an excellent interview on  Aurelia Nelson’s Curtain Up show this past Sunday on 104.9

Listen to a podcast of the show here.

You can see Fly tomorrow at the Rhumb Line and next Friday with his touring band Orleans at North Shore Music Theatre.

It’s another excellent week of music on Cape Ann leading up to a weekend of two sold out Tom Rush shows at Shalin Liu.  See the full live music lineup here.

Garfish has played regularly at many area venues since forming the band in 2006, including the Topsfield Fair, American Cancer Society and Senator Bruce Tarr fundraisers along with other local benefits and venues on the North Shore.
