Waldo Howland Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

From Greensboro, North Carolina

September 27, 2012

“If you can’t make what you are doing fun, something is wrong with what you are doing.”

Waldo Howland (1909-1998)

As owners of the Concordia Company of Padanarum, Massachusetts, Howland and designer Ray Hunt created many of the great yachts of the twentieth century including the 39 and 41 foot Concordia yawls, of which more than one hundred were built, and which was considered by many to be the best cruiser ever made. Howland’s autobiographical trilogy, A Life in Boats, gives essential insight into the practice and recent history of American boatbuilding, and also covers his later years as a board member of Mystic Seaport, one of the best collections of historic boats anywhere. Full disclosure: my wife’s niece is married to Waldo Howland’s grandson.

Ardelle Report

Friday report from Mike Dyer aboard the Ardelle… They are lazily making their way down the Chesapeake and are eating like kings! It turns out Harold has some moves in the kitchen and likes to cook. He’s been whipping up pies in his woodstove. Bob Brophy brought all sorts of goose meat and they’ve had goose stew, goose sausage and even goose benedict this morning! For lunch today Harold came up with a goose shepherd’s pie. Mike says this is the calm part of the trip and their making up caloric intake from when they were in rough seas and nobody had time or desire to eat. It was pretty hairy but the Ardelle was solid and he wouldn’t have missed that part of the trip for the world. –Sarah Willwerth-Dyer Photos by Pierre Erhard

Cape Ann Shakespeare Troupe is delighted to announce the productions scheduled for its fifth season. The company has grown over the years and ranges in age from teens to eighties: students, businesspeople, teachers and other professions held together by a love of theatre and the works of William Shakespeare. New participants are always welcome either onstage or off.

The season opens November 1 at the Gorton Theatre (Home of the Gloucester Stage Company) with "Shakespeare In Two Acts", a program of comedy and tragedy juxtaposed, consisting of "Visiting Lear" an adaptation of "The Tragedy of King Lear", directed by Ray Jenness and "Love on a Midsummer Night", a twenty- first century take on "A Midsumer Night’s Dream", directed by Nick Neyeloff. "Visiting Lear" opened CAST’s first full season, was enthusiastically received and requested to be performed again. The action is set in a nursisng home, where an elderly man abandoned by his family drifts in and out of Lear’s tragedy.

"Love on a Midsummer Night" uses four players to portray Lysander, Demitrius, Hermia, Helena, Oberon, Bottom, Puck, and Titania in a tangled plot of love and deception. A narrator steps in and out of the action commenting on the follies and foibles that unfold.

Performances are November 1 – 4 and 9 – 11, with opening night a pay what you will performance.

The next production is Shakespeare’s timeless political drama, "The Tragedy of Julius Caesar", also to be performed at the Gorton Theatre on February 28, March 1,2,3,8,9,10. There are still some roles open and backstage help is needed. Anyone interested may email the director, Joseph Stiliano, at cast2008@prodigy.net .

On Tuesday, April 23, 2013, CAST will celebrate Shakespeare’s birthday with"Shakespeare Shout!" and evening of selected readings by members of the company and an invitation to the public to bring their own favorite pieces to read. Time and venue for this season’s birthday celebration are to be announced.

CAST’s final production of the season will be "Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead", Tom Stoppard’s brilliant dark comedy featuring Prince Hamlet’s university classmates who are unwittingly caught up in the intrigues at Elsinore. Directed by Ray Jenness, it will play on May 10,11,12,17,18,19 at the recently restored Rockport Community House, where Cape Ann Shakespeare Troupe staged its first productions.

More information on CAST may be found at capeannshakespearetroupe.blogspot.com and Facebook.

I thought GMG readers would be interested to know that this Saturday is Museum Day. The Cape Ann Museum will be offering free admission to those who print out a Smithsonian Pass.  Let me know if you need any more info, but the website does a pretty good job explaining!

Dear Joe,

The Society for the Encouragement of the Arts is pleased to invite you to our fourth Fall Benefit, "Celebrate Emerging Stars!" on Saturday, October 27, at the Bass Rocks Golf Club. We will have two fabulous sets of musicians performing as part of an uplifting evening of art and music. Highlights for this celebration include performances from the 17-piece Cape Ann Big Band (right) which has recently played several "sold out" performances at Shalin Liu.

They will be opened by the Beverly High School Jazz Sextet (left). Profiles of all musicians will be featured in upcoming seARTS eblasts.

Both visual and functional art from a diverse nominated group of emerging artists of many genres and generations will also be showcased and for sale. Hearty hors d’oeuvres from Tim Hopkins Catering will accompany a cash bar at the event.

‘Paws on the Beach’ Celebration

gloucester dog park, beach party
Event Designed to Honor the End of the Summer Ban on Dogs on Gloucester’s Beaches and Help Raise Money for the Gloucester Dog Park

The Friends of Gloucester Dog Park announced that it will host a ‘Paws on the Beach’ celebration in honor of the end of the summer ban on dogs on the city’s beaches. The event, which is being held at Good Harbor Beach on Saturday, September 29, will feature coffee and treats donated by Mamie’s Kitchen. Members of the Cape Ann community are encouraged to bring their dogs to play on the beach and support the Gloucester Dog Park.

“Summer may have come to an end, but for dogs, beach days are just beginning,” said John Dugger of The Friends of Gloucester Dog Park. “Many dogs really enjoy the beach – whether it be running in the sand or splashing in waves. We are excited to bring the community together to exercise and socialize their dogs on one of the most beautiful beaches in the Northeast.”

Dog guardians should bring and use waste removal bags (barrels are located at the end of the foot bridge).

Friends of Gloucester Dog Park t-shirts and signature red dog park bandanas for dogs will be available for sale, and gift baskets will be raffled to benefit the Gloucester Dog Park.

Additional donations can be made online at www.gloucesterdogpark.org or by sending a check to The Gloucester Fund at 45 Middle Street, Gloucester, MA 01930 with the memo line: “Dog Park.”

Did You Know? (Good Used Cars)

If you find yourself in need of a good used vehicle, call or stop in and see Peter Anderson at Meineke, 168 Eastern Ave., Gloucester.  My old Annie girl reached the point this summer where taking her to my mechanic to repair the things that had started going would have cost more than I though it was worth for a 1997 van, although she still had alot of life left in her.  When the battery and windshield wiper motor went so I could no longer drive her or pass inspection, and I didn’t want to keep borrowing Brenda Malloy’s cool art car, I knew it was time.  Peter had a nice 2000 Plymouth Voyager in my price range, so I now have wheels and am mobile again, thanks to Smokin’ Jim Yancy who brought me to see Peter and Elynn Kroger who brought me over to pick her up.  It is so great living in a community where you can get the things you need and have good people all around you to offer help when you need it.  There really is no place on earth like Gloucester.

On another happy note, Eric and Sheila from Rockport ended up buying my old Annie van  and Eric is going to make the repairs and fix her up for Sheila to drive.  I had put her on Craig’s List, and Sheila who is a FOB saw the Good Morning Gloucester sticker on her bumper and told Eric to go check her out.  I look forward to seeing her moving on the roads of Cape Ann again.

Hi I am Cochise and I  am here at the Cape Ann Animal Aid located at Four Paws Lane, Gloucester with my siblings.  We are all playful pups.  Our mom is a Beagle mix who weighs about 38 pounds.  We think we will be medium in size, except for me, I think I will be the largest pup and the cutest.  Whey don’t you stop by the shelter and see for yourself?!

Don’t forget the 2nd Annual Christopher Cutler Rich Golf Tournament Monday, October 15 with a 12 Noon shotgun start registration begins at 10:30 a.m. at Bass Rocks Country Club.  Check our website at: CapeAnnAnimalAid.com or call us at 978-564-3486.

On a Mission from Bill O’Connor

Hi Joey,

While we were at the Eastern Point breakwater on Saturday, this guy walked by us like he was on a mission.  He was going to have fish for dinner for sure.

The breakwater is a great excursion because you get some exercise and see a Gloucester from a unique perspective.  B likes to go and check out what the fishermen are catching, and loves looking through the tackle boxes.

Enjoy!

Great Local Poet Reads at Khan Studio and the GMG Gallery

During the Captains Courageous Festival this weekend, we had the real pleasure of readings by Gwendolyn Carr.  The reading started and ended with her poem, Gloucester with manywonderful poems sandwiched in between, all on the subject of water.

Gloucester

I live close to the shore,

close by the men,

who go to sea,

who weather sun and storm

alike — they say they are free.

But are they free?

Or only slaves of water,

that vast expanse

which calls them every day.

They cannot stay away,

but must set out

to ply their trade,

to bring their living

to the shore.

They can do no more.

Their fathers did it,

so must they

live to obey the water.

I live close — close enough

to watch them though.

My danger lies on land.

Gwendolyn’s books can be purchased at Gordon College Bookstore and The Bookstore at Beverly Farms.
