Jim Malcolm, one of Scotland’s finest traditional singers and songwriters, is bringing his award-winning music to Rockport MA in April.

Jim Malcolm, one of Scotland’s finest traditional singers and songwriters, is bringing his award-winning music to Rockport MA in April.

Malcolm, who has twice been booked to sing for Prince Charles, was voted Scotland’s Songwriter of the Year in 2004 and was shortlisted for the Scots Singer of the Year award in 2004, 2005 and 2009. He has been described as “one of the most outstanding talents to emerge from the Scottish Folk Scene in years”.

JMposterpic07[4] (1)

The concert is being organised by Elizabeth Malcolmson, who with her husband has been hearing Malcolm perform for years at house concerts and in larger venues with Old Blind Dogs, and wanted to bring the artist closer to home. “Jim combines amazing music with great stories,” said Elizabeth, “and I thought how wonderful it would be to hear him play for my family, friends and other musical enthusiasts, in my own home town.”

And Malcolm, for his part, is looking forward to playing in MA. “I love playing for American audiences, which have always been good to me,” he said. “Scottish audiences can be a bit reserved but Americans seem better at having a good time – my concerts are usually really good fun. I’m looking forward to playing in Rockport MA again.”

Malcolm, who was front man with the much-loved Old Blind Dogs for seven years, plays guitar and mouthorgan and sings songs from the Scots tradition, as well as his own award-winning compositions.

Often played on the radio show Thistle & Shamrock, Malcolm was brought up in the Perthshire and Angus areas of Scotland and was steeped in traditional music and song from a young age. He learned to play guitar while at school and by his early twenties was winning songwriting contests and playing in folk clubs all over Scotland. He later took up harmonica and is now a leading exponent of simultaneous guitar and harmonica, “displaying more talent than many who have made their living from harmonica alone,” as one critic wrote.

In December 2004 Malcolm won the coveted Songwriter of the Year title in the Scots Trad Music Awards, and he has eight solo CDs to his credit.

Pet of the Week- Labrador

Hello! My name is Labrador and I bet you were expecting a dog! I don’t bark, swim or go jogging – but I love to lounge and play. I am a mellow two-year-old black-and-white male cat. I am residing at the Cape Ann Animal located at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter in Gloucester. Check our website at: CapeAnnAnimalAid.com
There are lots of sunny spots for me to nap and the staff and volunteers are wonderful to me. Remember, when you stop by the shelter to adopt me, ask for Labrador the cat. I am not certain why, but someone asked if I am tuxedo cat? Do humans really think that we cats would wear a tuxedo? I don’t even like wearing a collar!

Fr. Green Leaving Holy Family Parish in June, staying in Gloucester

This post is more personal than usual, but it’s big news for me and I wanted to share it with the GMG family.

Almost two years have passed since I came to Cape Ann and began my ministry at Holy Family Parish. It’s been a really great time! This is a wonderful community, and I am very grateful for the warm welcome I have received. Becoming a part of the GoodMorningGloucester team has been a hugely positive part of my experience! Special thanks to Joey for that!

As some of you know, a lot has happened in my life in the past four years. Not all of it has been as good as coming to Cape Ann. A terrible scandal came to light in my religious congregation (the Legionaries of Christ) in 2009, and since 2010 I have been working in parishes, seeking to discover the new path that God has planned for me. I have not really had time to step back and process all that has happened, and it has raised personal issues that I am still trying to work through. I have come to realize that it is not possible for me to deal with these things adequately at the same time as trying to serve the community in active ministry at a parish. I need some time without pastoral duties in order to heal and discern. As a consequence, Cardinal O’Malley has agreed to allow me to take a year off, starting in early June.

I hope that this period of leave will help me to find greater peace and clarity so that I can better carry out God’s will in my life. Another priest will take my place at Holy Family Parish, and I hope he will love and enjoy this community as much as I do. At the end of this year I will either take a new parish assignment or explore other avenues.

At first I was planning to move closer to Boston, because leaving my position at the parish means a change in my role in the community of Cape Ann, and the adjustment could be awkward. However, in the past couple of days I realized that I have such great friends and community here, and there are so many great things going on in this city, that I don’t want to leave. So, I am looking into affordable, possibly shared housing (i.e. sharing a house or apartment – hopefully with room for lots of books and origami) in Gloucester or Rockport from June 2013 to June 2014, and I will be looking for light employment to help me cover my expenses. If I could support myself financially for the year with just photography and/or teaching origami classes, I would, but I don’t think that’s likely…

Anyway, I hope to continue posting to GoodMorningGloucester throughout the year! Just don’t be surprised if you don’t see me showing up as a lead player in Church functions this coming year, even though I will be around town.

You Gotta Love the Causeway

guatemalan students at causeway

My sister Judy came to visit last weekend with two Guatemalan exchange students they have staying with them.

Marcela Pineda is in an OBGYN program at Mass General; Federico Murga is studying sleep therapy and neurology at Beth Israel.  They are both from Guatemala City.

When it was time for lunch, it was straight to the Causeway, Judy’s favorite place to eat in Gloucester.   Marcela and Federico both enjoyed it immensely.  We all got chowder (my favorite is the fish chowder) and shared seafood platters (yummmm!).

CAPE ANN TRAIL STEWARDS

Inaugural Event

Cape Ann Trail Stewards (CATs), a new non-profit organization, announces its upcoming inaugural event.

Cape Ann Trail Stewards was founded by citizens of Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester and Essex to help landowners and conservation organizations protect, maintain and expand Cape Ann’s trail networks.

By matching volunteers with trails in need of stewardship, CATs will connect Cape Ann residents with the vast network of trails in the area and help preserve these recreational resources for our community. Cape Ann Trail Stewards will arrange workdays where volunteers can learn about trail construction and maintenance.

The board of directors includes residents of Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester, and representatives from the Essex County Greenbelt, Essex County Trails Association, Cape Ann Climbing Coalition, the New England Mountain Bike Association and other user groups.

Cape Ann Trail Stewards invites the public to join the inaugural clean up workday at the city of Gloucester’s Goose Cove Reservoir on Sunday, April 21st (the day before Earth Day) beginning at 1PM.

We will meet in the lot along Gee Avenue. Participants should wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for the weather (the event is rain or shine). Bring rakes, shovels and buckets if you have them. CATs will supply gloves and other materials.

Frank McKinney Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

April 19, 2013

“It ain’t a bad plan to keep still occasionally, even when you know what you’re talking about.”

Frank McKinney (Kin) Hubbard (1868-1930)

Midwestern humorist, cartoonist, and writer known best for his political commentary, Hubbard was a high school dropout who said his goal in life was to own a circus. He worked briefly as a silhouette artist and attended art school for a short time before beginning cartoon work for the Indianapolis News.  For 25 years he drew the acclaimed cartoon “Abe Martin of Brown County” which went into syndication and made him nationally known. Will Rogers cited Hubbard as an influence and called him the greatest humorist of his time.
