Fish on Fridays

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

This is a somber week on the waterfront. There was no last minute reprieve from the quota cutbacks that took effect on May 1, which, when combined with the catch share management system, has put many small Gloucester fishermen on the brink of extinction.

Naz Sanfilippo, owner of f/v Cat Eyes, has been fishing for 47 years, since he was 8 years old. Naz tells us it looks like that is all over. The cod cutbacks are so stringent, he says, he can exhaust his entire quota in one haul.

Artists Work Spaces: Eileen Oliver

Hi Paul;

You featured my little studio space last year when I was living in Rockport. We moved to Bayview in Gloucester last September and I have been painting more than ever since I’ve been here. I’m walking distance from Plum Cove beach and Lanesville and both my husband, Jim, and I (he’s also an artist) have been doing some of our best work. Here are some pictures of my work space.

I have a website through Fine Art America..

Theatre in the Pines – “Dividing the Estate”

Opening Night – Proceeds will be donated to Susan G. Komen Foundation

“Dividing the Estate” by Horton Foote and directed by Nan Webber, will be held on May 9, 10, 11 at 7:30 and May 12 at 3 p.m. at Spiran Hall located at the corner of School Street and Broadway,  Rockport.

In, “Dividing the Estate,” old resentments and sibling rivalries surface as the members of this hilariously dysfunctional family go head to head to see who might claim the biggest piece of the pie.  Rich humor clearly reflects the spirit of the playwright. Cast members include Scott Hazzard,  Kierstin Hazzard, Sarah Clark, Sue Barratt Souza, Rick Doucette, Eileen Fitzgerald, and  Mark and Patti Natti, Ruth Exama, Alexa Exama, Patricia Richards and Carl Pulkkinen. Randy Dupps is Stage Manager, Frank Walcott is the technical director and  set design and production manager is Martin Ray.

Tickets are now on sale at The Bookstore in Gloucester and Toad Hall Bookstore in Rockport.

Mayor Carolyn A. Kirk was pleased to recently accept the Golden Shoe Award on behalf of the city. WalkBoston awarded Gloucester in recognition of its efforts to make the City more pedestrian friendly.

The award recognizes Gloucester’s recent achievements, including:

  • Creating “Gloucester HarborWalk” to promote accessibility and walkability around Gloucester’s working waterfront
  • Increased funding to dramatically improve sidewalks and development of a Complete Streets Plan to identify gaps in the existing sidewalk system
  • Advocate for a Transportation Bond to improve sidewalks around Gloucester’s elementary schools and to establish a Safe Routes to School assessment for O’Maley Middle School

With the help of WalkBoston, Gloucester also developed GloucesterWalks maps, and has distributed 2,500 maps to residents and tourists since May. Gloucester was honored at WalkBoston’s annual celebration, along with Madison Park Development Corp. and the Barr Foundation.

Gordon “Sax” to join This Thursday night blues party with Dave Sag’s 8-11

dave sag

Let’s welcome back that jet-propelled guru on the hautboy of honk: Mr. Gordie “Sax” Beadle. Just back from a series of successful shows at the North Shore Mall Third Annual Shoplifting Festival, he’s sure to put a smile on your face and a couple blisters on your feet!  We’re gonna wiggle our way thru the entire jukebox of R&B without dropping a stitch of laughter. But, seriously, folks, if you haven’t seen Gordie yet due to a coma or something, you owe it to yourself to make the extra effort. This guy is an amazing Saxophonist\ singer and frontman. This will cure whatever ails you, and then some.
Backing him up will be a new guitarist , Mr. Mike DiBari, who i’ve worked with and enjoyed immensely. He knows all the chords. Cheer him on! Mr. Jeff Casper, the friendly drummer will be beatin’ the skins, and I’ll be on base.
Do not drive a car or operate heavy machinery until you know how Gorditol® affects you. Women who may become pregnant WILL become pregnant after hearing this guy! So stay away!

Artist Work Spaces: Scout King

Hello there!
I’m a milliner, with my studio carved out of a corner in my East Gloucester shop, Scout Vintage Finds. I hand-craft hats using time-honored millinery techniques and tools. I use wool & fur felt, straw, or buckram to create the basic hat shape, then finish and trim by hand, using vintage trims and findings.
Hats in process:
A few vintage hat blocks. A block determines the shape of the hat, and can be literal (lower left), or perhaps a bit science-fiction-y, like the one on the right. This block will yield a hat that, after being blocked (using intense heat and steam) and dried, will have those side bumps pushed in, with the small creases left by those ridges stitched into place; the lower portion of the hat below the block’s “waist” will fold up and under, to create a finished, inside band. Blocks can demand vision and faith from both the milliner and client, as it’s sometimes a visual leap from block to finished piece. Blocks are virtually always hand carved from hardwoods like maple, walnut, poplar, etc., and are beautiful objects themselves.

These particular blocks belong to Wayne Wichern, a dear friend of mine & master milliner, whose San Francisco workshops I take at every opportunity:
A felt hat starts with this…
…and can become this. I name my hats after vintage cocktails; this is the “Third Rail.”
Inspiration is essential:
I love making hats! When I’m not away making hats for far-flung theatrical productions, I’m making hats at Scout – and when I’m not at Scout, I’m dreaming about making hats.
Scout is open Thursday-Sunday 11-6, and by appointment. I always, always welcome hat chat!

I welcome custom hat orders, and that I offer millinery classes & workshops.
Scout Vintage Finds is located at 186 East Main St. (across from Beacon Marine);
 I can be reached at (978) 290-0533.

Ciao!

Ryan & Wood Distillery wins 2013 “Best of New England – Editors’ Choice” in Yankee Magazine

clip_image002

Ryan & Wood Distillery has been recognized as a 2013 “Editors’ Choice” winner for Best Distillery Tour in Yankee Magazine’s Travel Guide to New England, on newsstands now. This designation is awarded by Yankee’s editors and contributors, who select restaurants, lodgings, and attractions in New England for the exclusive list. For 37 years, Yankee Magazine’s Travel Guide to New England has been the most widely distributed and best-selling guide to the six-state region.

President Bob Ryan noted that he was particularly honored to be recognized for his tours. “From the start, we aimed to embrace tourism as part of our business. We are proud to bring people to Gloucester and draw attention to the region.” Bob’s wife Kathy, who leads most of the tours, added “giving tours requires a big portion of our day but it’s time well spent. We are happy to have a great mix of locals from the community and visitors from all over the world. We try to represent Cape Ann with each tour and each bottle.”

Distillery tours are offered twice-daily Monday through Saturday at 10:00am and 1:00pm. On any given day visitors may witness fermenting vats of molasses for Folly Cove Rum, hand-milling of grains for Ryan & Wood Straight Rye Whiskey, or perhaps Bob himself at the still, taste-testing his distillation of Beauport Vodka or Knockabout Gin.

Yankee Magazine’s May/June 2013 Travel Guide, on newsstands April 23, features 317 “Best of New England — Editors’ Choice” winners, which include the region’s best attractions, food & dining, lodging, and bargains.
