Big Mike’s Bikes and the Six Peas

Over the wrestling mats in Junior High there was a sign: Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Those are the peas I’m talking about. But really not preparation but maintenance. For some reason, all my lab instruments I have on strict maintenance schedules but stuff I own I just use it until it breaks.

Like this Gary Fisher Utopia I used as part of my commute back in 1996:beforeGaryFisher1996Beat the hell out of the poor thing and it never got a lick of tender loving care. Lived outside on the back of my 4Runner for the first five years, you can see how the bike rack tore the paint off the top tube. As a hybrid street bike it was awesome for about two of those years hopping curbs but then things started going south. 24 gears down to 7, back brake was dicey so instead of a little maintenance after five years beating on it I bought a new bike and let a friend borrow this one. Then in 2008 it made the move to Rockport and got thrown into the corner of the shop looking pretty sad. Cables split and rusted, the movable parts did not move but the parts that weren’t supposed to move did.

But I always remembered my old Gary Fisher fondly. I loved the “arc” handle bar and short wheelbase. So I collected up the pieces and dropped them off at Big Mike’s Bikes. Mike wasn’t there but I left a note: Option A: the bike is trashed, can you make it a one speed? Option B: the full monty, fix everything. Got a phone call back and the full monty was the smart course, 160 bucks and replace a whole bunch of doo-dads. (I lost the receipt but it was one long list which included what sounded like very important pieces like bearings and races.)

The price seemed way too reasonable so I greenlit the full monty. And now it looks like:GaryFisher1996UtopiaI’ve been riding it a week and I still think, “holy cow, this bike never shifted like this.” For Cape Ann, large set in front and the back 8 gears just slide one right into each other as you go up and down the 23 hills of Cape Ann. I jumped on this morning thinking I would just bop over to Granite Pier but then I was going past the Rockport High School and the next thing I knew I was going past Good Harbor Beach and on to Eastern Point Light House. A stop at Joey’s and since I could not smell the fragrance of Toby Chowder I was up to Fred Bodin’s for water (but not open yet), down Maplewood, up Cherry Hill (outta the saddle on that hill), past O’Malley Middle and Goose Cove Nursery and over to Halibut Point before my needle was on empty.

Back to the 6 peas. Preparation is maintenance. Change the oil and the grease and mechanical things last longer. Or you can do what I do at least for bikes, beat the crap out of them and drive them into the ground, leave them in the corner 5 years then go bring the pile of parts over to Big Mike’s Bikes. But I might change my ways and actually bring my other bikes in for a tune-up. Whorled peas may follow.

Big Mike’s Bikes is easy to find. Big Mike’s right next to Big Macs.

ps. The Rubber Duck does this type of stuff incognito. I don’t want the special Rubber Duck treatment. I only put the Duck on the dash at the Rockport dump so I can get free parking.

pps. for the excruciatingly bored on this foggy foggy Cape Ann night the rough out path on google is 23.2 miles. The awesome thing about Cape Ann is you can add and subtract dozens of miles by including or skipping over points and coves. Same as in a kayak you could take the straight razor point to point 20 miles and add ten miles easy.

Weather permitting, on Friday night August 9 from 9:00 to 11:00, the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club will have telescopes set up for free public viewing on the grounds of the Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan St in Lanesville. Everyone is invited to come see beautiful views of Saturn, the moon, 13 billion year old star clusters, the glowing remains of dying stars, and more.

This is an opportunity to learn all about (and to see) what’s up in our beautiful Cape Ann night sky, and to get all your astronomy questions answered. It’s still high summer, so we suggest you bring insect repellant. Remember, this program is dependent on clear skies; if you can see the moon you can assume we’ll be there.

GAAC meets at 8:00pm on the second Friday of every month for presentations, snacks and good conversation at the Lanesville Community Center. Learn more at our website, http://gaac.us and our Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/gaacpage . You can follow us on Twitter as @gaactweet.

Julius Henry "Groucho" Marx Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

“I’ve had a perfectly wonderful evening. But this wasn’t it.”

Julius Henry "Groucho" Marx (1890-1977)

image

Groucho’s comedy career spanned vaudeville, radio, film and later television. He made 26 movies, half of them with his brothers, Harpo, Chico, Gummo, and Zeppo. His solo career included the radio and television show “You Bet Your Life” which ran for 11 years in the 40’s and 50’s. Self-deprecating and self-taught, he was a voracious reader who said his greatest achievement was to have one of his books listed as a cultural treasure by the Library of Congress. Another favorite quote among his many witticisms is “Outside of a dog, man’s best friend is a book. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.”

Here is a striper caught off the Cardinal Cushing Villa in Magnolia by Captain Paul Moralli, aboard Cat. Latitude 43 in Gloucester purchased it from Intershell.

The fish was pan seared, skin-on, with bacon, snap peas, corn risotto & crispy fried leeks. This tasty dish was prepared by Chef Mike O’Brien at Lat 43 where it is available in season as a dinner special.

15+ Things to do on a RAINY DAY & a classic video

Visiting Gloucester?  Have friends in from out of town?  You’re probably complaining to yourself that the weather isn’t cooperating, right?  Not to worry!  There’s lots to do in Gloucester and Cape Ann when the weather is lousy.  Just be glad you’re not on Cape Cod, where there really isn’t much to do except go to the beach.

Just to see what he’d say I asked a friend, who grew up in Gloucester and now lives in NYC (owns a bar and writes for a New York Time Blog) why would New Yorkers come here instead of Cape Cod.  Here’s the mini rant he wrote back:

Gloucester is a place for culture now, just like it was in the 1800s and 1900s. Contemporary culture is actually at its best here, maybe more so than any Mass city other than Boston and Cambridge.  Where else can you buy fresh caught fish, see a great play, hear Henri Smith play a bar or watch the Met opera in 3D, attend a reading by a national author, eat lobster in the rough or a 3-star style meal, hike, jump quarries, dive off rocks into the ocean (there are no rocks on Cape Cod), mountain bike, drink a $2 beer in barroom full of fisherman, see the most beautiful boats in the world, go to a world class museum, etc etc.

You nailed it Ray!  Below the video, we’ve listed another 15 things you can do on a rainy day.  Just be glad you don’t live in England, where you wouldn’t expect the sun.  As John Lennon put it in the Beatles classic, “I Am the Walrus”:

Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun.
If the sun don’t come, you get a tan
From standing in the English rain.

Lost Dog

Hi Joey  wondering if you could post this for me.  I found a dog today running down Bass Ave in traffic.  The dogs name is Quizno.  I called the # on the tag a few times but got no answer I’m hoping they are not like me and don’t use their home phone. The dog is small seems to be maybe a miniature schnauzer. I had to go to work so the dog is at my house alone. I can be reached at 978-290-1228. Thanks. Kellie

Catching Memories

P1060368_edited-1

When I was about this young boy’s age I regularly went fishing with my father in the Rondout Creek in Ulster County N.Y. where he was raised.  During those outings we spoke little, but communicated a great deal. He taught me patience and the practice of meditation as it applied to repeated casts into the mesmerizing swirls, pools and eddies of the creek. He taught me that subtlety and finesse caught more fish than brute force and that the joy was in the journey, not the destination.

I never became a great fisherman, but the memories I caught on those excursions – hiking through the woods to the creek, baiting up, watching how Dad expertly cast his line and landed his fish, and walking home quietly through the fields as the setting summer sun cast a magical glow  – these prizes I caught, and they are displayed forever on the mantel of my heart.

Mari Martin joins The Blues Party at The Rhumb Line Tonight 8:30 -11:30 – 7.25.2013

dave-lookin-at-yaDave says,

We’re gonna throw everything we got including the kitchen sink into the musical cauldron. And floating up to the top will be that Rockport Rascal and Blues Behemoth, the one and only Ms. Mari Martin. It’s always a pleasure to hear this nightingale sing. She can adjust her uvula in many ways to make your hippocampus explode on cue. My pants will be held up by a strong belt of vodka. Your earrings may melt. Every tune is scientifically designed for  shaking one’s tootsies. Need I say more?

Adding creme filling to the proceedings will be that unflappable glitar whiz, Mr. Bob Enik. This guy scares me: you can’t lose him…..

He’s bringing his buddy, the keyboard millipede Mr. Jim Gambino, from the crime family. You better like him, or else. Also, Mr. Roger Brocklebank, the heartbeat of Madhouse® and fine drum instructor, will her beating time along with myself, on base. Don’t forget your Serutan®!
