Hey there all you Patrons of the Arts!
This Saturday, August 17th, is the Second Annual Wet Paint Event and Auction. Over 60 artists have signed up to paint their favorite scenes in Essex and donate them to the silent and live auction. Here are the details:
Painter registration Saturday morning beginning at 8AM at the Waterline Center on Main Street.
Artists will be all over Essex for the day and they would love to have you come by and watch them at work. Just look for the balloons!
Beginning at 5PM, there will be a gala event at the Cox Reservation on Eastern Avenue. Chebacco Liquors will have a cash bar set up, Dana King and friends will be playing great music, Laurie Lufkin will be serving delicious food and you will be able to see, up close and personal, all of the wonderful art that was produced during the day right in Essex.
There will be both a silent and live auction component to the evening; most of the art will be sold during the silent auction, while some of the most interesting art will be sold during the live portion of the evening. Last year there was competitive bidding and no one went home disappointed!
This entire evening is brought to you by Terri Eramo of Eventide Gallery at Periwinkles and the Essex Merchants Group. Proceed from the evening will go directly to promoting Essex as a destination and to help promote other events for our town.
Tickets are $25 each and are available at Main Street Antiques, Periwinkles and other locations. They are selling quickly so get yours now. There may be a limited number available at the door, but don’t wait!
Butch and I are counting on you to come and hang out with friends and neighbors and support local art as well as the Merchants Group, buy some exceptional works of art, painted that day, right in our little town. It is an event not to be missed!
See you on Saturday!
Susan and Butch
Looking for ASL “speakers” to master the art of signing
I’m learning ASL (American Sign Language) and wanted to see if GMG has any deaf/hard-of-hearing readers (I myself am a hearing person). I’d love to meet new people whose primary means of communication is signing. Is there anyone in Gloucester? I’ll treat you to a nice cup of coffee/tea for your troubles 🙂
Thank you so much!
Natalia.

IDRC Update
he IDRC heads to Lunenburg, NS
A great day of racing with a limited field last Saturday produced winners in 4 out of 5 dory racing categories. The first heat featured multi-time mixed doubles champs Elin D’Angelo/ Mike Frontiera in an exhibition race with first time competitors Tyler Edmonds/Thomas Beaton. Both faired well in the race and completed the course with ease. The second race was the Masters (Over 40) division with a rematch of last August’s barn burner between Mike Harmon/John Scola and Allan Murray/Bill Edmonds . This year Harmon/Scola took an early lead and held it throughout the race. Also, competing in the masters division for the 2nd time this year was the tandem of Alex Thomas/Donny Favaloro who continue to improve with race experience. The final race Saturday delivered on its promise to be a tight heat. Mark Duval/Joe Sanfillipo took on rivals Glenn Harrington/Erik Dombrowski and Chris/Nick Giacalone. All 3 crews raced into the turning flags in a dead heat and the race home was on! Duval/Sanfillipo and Harrington/Dombrowski continued the pace home changing leads with the help of some building waves. In a final push (and crash into the start boat by Harrington/Dombrowski) Duval/Sanfillipo came away as victors in a photo finish. What an exciting day of racing. The final teams traveling to Canada will be announced once the rowers coordinate their individual schedules.
On another note, the Fishermen’s Memorial Service will be held this Saturday at the Fisherman’s Statue on the boulevard at 5 PM. To show our support for the forefathers of our sport, the IDRC plans to row over to the boulevard after meeting at the town landing around 4 PM Saturday. Bring a partner or take a friend for a ride on the harbor and show your support for those who have lost their loved ones at sea.
Lastly, the annual Maritime Gloucester Harbor Race sponsored by the Gig rowers will take place on Sunday, September 15th off Niles Beach . The race course is about 3.5 miles out to Eastern Point and back around Ten Pound Island . Registration will be at Niles Beach at 8 AM that Sunday morning. All members are welcomed to use the IDRC dories on a first come first served basis, so if you plan to row sign up and reserve a dory!!

Sweet Sixteen
This is our eldest grandchild, Priva, who turns 16 today. She is half Mexican and visits with her cousins in Mexico City every July. This year, the family had a belated quinceanera to celebrate her 15th birthday.
Priva lives in Brooklyn, is bi-lingual, an experienced traveller and a budding flutist.
The photo was taken by Guillermo Audelo, Priva’s cousin, in Mexico City.
Meet Liz Horwitz at Aquatro Gallery
Saturday, August 17th from 3-5:00pm at Aquatro Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck Ave. Gallery 4. There will be a Japanese paper weaving demo at 4:00, as well as a demonstration on the making of her beautiful eggs.
Artist Liz Mitsuye Horwitz, whose exquisite, three-dimensional paper sculptures in traditional Japanese fan shapes and her magnificent, micro-origami earrings are on display at Aquatro Gallery through Columbus Day in 2013, will be in the gallery Saturday, August 17, 2013 between 3-5 PM for Aquatro’s Meet The Artist Reception in her honor. The artist will be giving the paper-weaving demonstration at 4:00PM that day. The event is free and is open to the public.
Liz Mitsuye Horwitz grew up in Tokyo, Japan surrounded by both the traditional materials and arts of Japan and the contemporary expression of Japanese life and culture in printmaking. Her sculptural work and her more functional origami earrings both use Japanese “washi” paper which is a staple of Japanese life. Mitsuye’s three-dimensional fans seek to reconfigure the static scenes of sumo wrestlers, herons and cranes, geishas
and make them more dramatic. Multi-layered constructions in traditional fan shapes, the illustrations on the washi paper are often completely realized, even though the sculptures are built from many layers of foam and paper, each layer painstakingly created and plotted to keep the scene intact.
Horwitz attended Colby College and is an accomplished musician on the flute
and double-bass in both classical and jazz idioms. She resides in Newton,
MA.

Dave says,
We’re having too much fun this summer,so, let’s make it even better. Please welcome back Gloucester’s own Godfather of punque, Mr, Willie Alexander. Just indited into the Gloucester Rock and Roll Museum, right next to Sylvester Ahola and Joe Pal, Willie’s sure to get tour fluids movin’. That is, if he can find the place. I’m gonna help him out.

Blazing his saddles will be that cosmic gas-giant, Mr. Billy Loosigian , who’s been in more fabulous Boston Bands than you can imagine. Presently in Willie’s band, this guy plays like he has four hands and 24 fingers.
Rounding out the heavy lifting will be our favorite tonsorially-challenged drumambulist, Mr. Steevie Chaggaris ,keeper of the flame and general mucky muck. A great nite! We hit at 8:30 and play till exhaustion. Somebody help me!

Urgent: Special Needs Dog needs Forever Home
Willow-Female, pit bull mix
http://pitbull.rescueme.org/Massachusetts?13-08-12-00223
This little bundle of wiggles was found wondering the streets of Boxford. The kennel staff in the pound were quickly drawn to her happy nature. She weighs in at 39 pounds and is around 1-2 years old. She needs a special owner. She is frightened of new people. She does warm up nicely once she gets to know them but she is not good with strangers. She has been in intensive training for 2 months accessing her needs. She knows all her commands and is extremely bright. Willow’s options for adoption are limited. She needs an experienced handler and a structured environment- calm and quiet. No wild parties for this girl. She is happy simply spending time with her people and doggie friends. And she thrives on affection. She needs an adult loving home that will be patient and keep up her training. Her ideal home would have another dog and fenced-in yard where they could play together. If you are an experienced dog handler that enjoys a quiet environment and could fulfill a need to help a dog with limited options please consider Willow. She loves walks, cuddles, car rides and playing with other dogs. Willow spends her time between the kennel and her foster Mom in Gloucester. She has wonderful eye contact and seems to have lots to say when she looks at you. Willow is trying to find her place and wants nothing more than a human companion who will spend time with her showing her a safe, quiet new life in this world. She is waiting patiently for that special someone. For that she will give you undivided love, affection and tons of smiles
This is a dog that needs a very special owner. She is a fabulous dog. All the attributes you would hope to have in your animal companion. Loyal, fun-loving, mild temperament, loves dogs, smart as a whip, cute as a button, loves car rides, housetrained, crate trained, requires little exercise, affectionate…
So why does she need a Special owner? She is afraid of new people. Once she warms up to them she is their friend for life. But she needs someone who will keep her safe and someone who enjoys a quiet lifestyle preferably with another dog and a fenced in yard.
PLEASE, Willow has been in shelters and rescues for nearly a year now. She so needs someplace to relax and decompress from the stress of it all.
Will you please post on your FB site, ask others to share it and keep posting weekly?
We need a massive campaign going to get this sweet girl into the right home.
Thank you,
Mary Lou

Inner Vision @ Mile Marker 1 – Friday & Saturday – Dan King Interviews them

From Dan King:
Innervisions has been playing Castle Hill in Ipswich the last few years but the crowds became too large for them to handle so Mile Marker 1 is hosting them over two nights at Cape Ann Marina – Mile Marker One. Friday August 16th and Saturday August 17th On Friday the 16th we have an Opening act from Newburyport called Freevolt.
Doors are at 7pm. 15$ at the door. Cape Ann Marina 77 Essex Ave. Gloucester Ma Mile Marker One 978 283-2122
We also have Free Shows on our Bridge Deck All weekend with Jah N I on Friday 8/16 and The Glostafarians on Saturday 8/17 plus The Runaround Sunday 8/18 at 5pm.
Q: When was Inner Visions formed?
A; The band is dated back to when Phillip “Grasshopper” Pickering returned from the military in 1979 and joined “Prophecy” Reggae Band. Over the years the band saw a name change and has continued on since that time as Inner Visions.
Q: What is the history of the band?
A: Inner Visions has been the around since the golden days of reggae when the likes of Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Dennis Brown, Toots and the Maytals, Peter Tosh, Third World, Steel Pulse, Inner Circle, Aswad and so many other foundation Artists presented the world with a music that would not be denied. Because the Virgin Islands dominant music art form was Calypso and now is Soca music, (and the fact that St. John was so far removed from the limelight), it was not until 1995 that the band started getting some recognition when we released our first official recording. Since then the music has taken us through the Caribbean, to Cancun Mexico, Europe and all over the USA. We now boast six self produced recordings to our credit.
Q. Who are the current members of the group?
A: Current members are Alvin “Jupiter” Pickering (Bass/Background Vocals), Phillip “Grasshopper” Pickering (Guitars/Percussions/Lead Vocals), Akiba “Mr. Snooze” Pickering (Keyboards/ Lead and Background Vocals), and Aswad “Hollywood” aka “Black Lion” (Drums). Just incase you are wondering about those Pickering last names, “Jupiter” and “Grasshopper” are brothers and “Mr. Snooze” and “Black Lion” are the son’s of “Grasshopper!”
Q. Who are your Musical influences?
A: Wow, there are so many to mention! I think the group Culture for the energy, Third World for the message of love, Aswad for the party style grooves, Steel Pulse for the consciousness, Bob Marley for the universal strength, and many, many more!
Q. What keeps you coming back to New England?
A: The awesome love we feel from our fans many of which we have had the opportunity to greet on our Island home long before performing stateside.
Q. What is your connection to Gloucester?
A: Joe Loiacano (Manager at Mile Marker 1) had known of us as he had lived and managed a venue on St. John a few years back. We had played Gloucester before at the Rhumb Line, but after hearing about the crowds we were packing in at the Castle on Crane Beach’s Summer Concert Series, he decided to have us. It was such a great success last year, he up-scaled it for this year’s performance.
Q. What is Island life like on St. John?
A: It is a rewarding way of life as one might expect but the drawback is it is very expensive to live there. We boast some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and some of the most wonderful people but like everywhere these days things are tough all around. Still we would not trade it for the whole wide world!
