Mapping Memory:Gloucester’s Oral History ProjectKick Off Event & Gloucester Jeopardy!

On Saturday, June 6 at 10:30 am, join the Local History Research Center at the Sawyer Free Library to celebrate the launch of Mapping Memory: Gloucester’s Oral History Project, a new community initiative to collect, preserve, and share the personal stories that define Gloucester’s neighborhoods. Mayor Lundberg will provide opening remarks. After, join neighbors for a game of Gloucester Neighborhood Jeopardy!  Find out the answer to questions like these:Burnham’s Field: Who sharpened everybody’s ice skates for generations?Downtown: Who made the iconic “Gloucester” jackets of the 1980s?East Main Street: Who were the “Michigan Bears”? About: This project will gather first-hand accounts from longtime residents, community leaders, and underrepresented voices through recorded oral history interviews. Mapping Memory will build a digital archive of interviews, transcripts, and mementos documenting life in Annisquam, Bay View, Downtown, East Gloucester, Folly Cove, Lanesville, Magnolia, Riverdale, Riverview, and West Gloucester from the 20th century to today. At this kickoff event, learn how the project works, explore ways to volunteer and participate, and help shape the stories we preserve. Whether you have lived in Gloucester for decades, recently arrived, or simply want to learn more about the community, your memories are an important part of Gloucester’s history.Come share ideas, connect with neighbors, and help map Gloucester’s memories—one story at a time. Light refreshments will be served.

Memorial Day is not only the traditional opening of the summer season, but is also the start of my Margarita Monday seasonal series. The idea is to highlight restaurants open on Mondays that have margaritas available. It’s a pretty simple concept but sometimes it’s a challenge to follow through until Labor Day. But this year, we start off at the wonderful Beauport Hotel bar. We stopped for lunch and our first margarita of the season. It’s a raspberry margarita! We enjoyed our lunch in a stylish setting though it was still a little too chilly for me to eat outside. The staff is attentive and the food appealing. Jim ordered the chicken sandwich and I had the fish sandwich. PS and BTW the fries are outstanding. I believe our bartender was a relatively new hire but he did very well. The other staff was helping him orient and serve which was very nice to observe. I often recommend the Beauport to Stage Fort Park Welcome Center visitors for lunch and will continue to do so. Enjoy your Memorial Day.
