High Dive…


In my March quest for local versions of Irish coffee, we couldn’t miss The James on Main Street in Essex. We stopped by for a little dinner and topped it off with Irish coffee and carrot cake. Jim had the short rib and ale pie which was super satisfying. He also enjoyed his carrot cake, but another local carrot cake takes first place in his opinion. As for the Irish coffee, no one asked about Baileys or whipped cream which is fine. It was hot and “sturdy” and I will have another someday. Slainte!

May is National Historic Preservation Month and the Gloucester Historical Commission will host its annual Preservation Awards ceremony on May 16th.
Nominations Now Open – Due March 27th
The Commission invites residents, businesses, property owners, and community organizations to submit nominations for its Annual Preservation Awards. These awards recognize outstanding achievements in preserving Gloucester’s history.
Award Categories:
● Adaptive Reuse – Creatively repurposing a building for another use or function while retaining its historic, unique, or defining architectural features.
● New Construction – A new building or structure designed to maintain the historical and architectural character of its surroundings.
● Archaeology – Excavation or protection of archaeological sites, artifacts, and cultural heritage ensuring they remain intact for future study and appreciation.
● Documentation of Gloucester History – Literary work, presentation, film, or project, extensively researched and referenced, that documents and thus preserves an aspect of Gloucester’s history.
● Education and Outreach – Community program, project, course, or exhibit featuring Gloucester’s history.
● Landscape Preservation – Recognizes the preservation, restoration or maintenance of historic landscapes, gardens, streetscapes, or grounds.
● Local Preservationist – An individual or group who advocates for and takes action to protect and maintain historically, architecturally, or culturally significant buildings, structures, sites, and natural resources.
● Restoration – Restoring a structure to a specific past moment in time.
● Lifetime Achievement – Individual who has demonstrated a sustained commitment to historic preservation for the benefit of the City of Gloucester.
How to Nominate
Community members are encouraged to nominate deserving projects, individuals, or organizations. Please complete the nomination form available at:

Nominations must be submitted by: Friday, March 27th.
Event Details
Award recipients will be honored at the Annual Preservation Awards Ceremony on: May 16th at the Sawyer Free Library Community Room. This event is free to the public.
