If you’re willing to admit you’re going to the other cape, we’ll give you 2 free tickets to see Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary

Yup.  That’s right.  The other cape … On August 17, we’re presenting Peter Yarrow, of Peter Paul & Mary, at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown, MA on Martha’s Vineyard (which you get to via that other cape south of Boston).  Now you know how much we love Gloucester and Cape Ann, but we just couldn’t pass up this opportunity to work with the most legendary, multi-platinum, multi-Grammy winning folk-singer alive today.  So we’re venturing down to the other cape in a couple of weeks and figure that if anybody else from Cape Ann wants to go, we’ll put you on our special “Cape Ann” guest list.  Just leave a comment (with your name) on this post saying that you WILL BE GOING TO THE OTHER CAPE and we’ll put you on the guest list.

How many of you remember this?

Only 11 hours left to save $12 on Saturday’s Gloucester Blues Fest

Willie ” Loco” Alexander Tonight! Dave Sag’s Blues Party @ The Rhumb Line 8:30-11:30 July 31, 2014

dave sag rl 4.3.2014

I’m psyched that Willie “Loco” Alexander is joining me this week! Forget this “Godfather”  jazz: Willie is the real deal. Anybody  with this kind of history is my kind of guy. His jackhammer style spackles all the cracks in the real rock ‘n’ roll pantheon. Makes me feel 20 again!
He’ll be bringing his longtime guitarist, Mr. Billy Loosigian, the phlegmatic, articulate articulator of artifice with him along with that cackling, lightning cracker, Mr. Steve Chaggaris, on the skins. I’ll be on bass, as usual. Stick that safety pin in your brain and dream about  the days you never lived through! Hours:8:30 to 11:30.

We only do this once a year, folks, so… please don’t miss it!  Sitting on the deck of
the Thomas E. Lannon is perhaps the most elegant way to appreciate the amazing
and beautiful city in which we live.  Actually, there always seems to be people from
other parts of the country (and world) on board, taking it all in for the very first
time.  We find ourselves looking at familiar waters through fresh eyes as we hear
their stories from points beyond the island.  But it’s Tommy, Kay and the rest of the
Ellis crew who are the true stars of the show.  So smooth and professional, you can
hardly tell there’s serious work being done all around you – until you volunteer to
help hoist a sail, that is!

New Live Henri Smith CD to be released at Celebrate Gloucester Aug 29

HenriPoster_600When Henri Smith brings New Orleans Friends & Flavours, featuring Grammy-winner Amadee Castenell to Cape Ann Marina’s Waterfront Pavilion on August 29, he’ll be helping to raise money for the Cape Ann YMCA — and he’ll release his new live CD recorded at The Larcom Theatre last March.

This will be Henri’s first live CD and it features stellar guests, including Grammy-winners Charles Neville and Amadee Castenell along with young, rising stars — all brought together by Henri Smith, one of the country’s premier band leaders.

Recorded and mixed by Bill Winn (whose award-winning credits include Whitney Houston and Herbie Hancock among many others), this CD is destined to become a classic — and you can get yours signed at the concert.

Henri Smith concerts have been selling out, so you probably shouldn’t procrastinate.

Get your tickets now (right here) and then you can relax the rest of the summer.

self-contained and utterly complete.  And his right hand hits

James Montgomery is bringing young rising stars to Gloucester on Aug 22 — and a surprise!

JamesNewsletterJust Announced: James Montgomery’s Celebrate Gloucester Guests

Celebrate Gloucester Update: John Sebastian Concert Rescheduled

Due to a scheduling conflict, we have moved the Celebrate Gloucester Benefit Concert featuring John Sebastian to Saturday, September 13 at the UU Meetinghouse.  Get tickets here.

CG_2014_JohnSebastian

This is one more example of how things often work out despite my frustration when I found out about the conflict.  The UU Meetinghouse a fitting venue given that this concert helps raise money for its restoration and the acoustics are excellent.  But with no air conditioning, it wouldn’t have worked for an August concert.  However, it’s perfect for September when the average high is 72 and low is 55 (it might be a little chilly at 8pm on the water that time of year) and the cushioned pews are quite comfortable.

This concert is a perfect opportunity to experience the music that helped define a generation up close and personal.  Here’s a video of John Sebastian at Woodstock (45 years ago this August):

Diane Blue joins The Dave Sag’s Blues Party tomorrow night @ The Rhumb Line. 8:30pm to 11:30pm 7.24.2014

dave sag rl 4.3.2014

This thursday, let’s welcome back the one and only Octomom of the blues: Ms. Diane Blue. A master of the harp and vocal half pipes, we’re callin’ in a special hazmat team in to deal with the proceedings.

First, there’s Mr. Pete Henderson, a fine, water-cooled 50 caliber guitarist, to chase away your demons, then adding Mr. Joe Bargar, a relentless air hammer, on keys, and Ms. Kathy Berkley, drummbler, to chop some wood for ya. Of course,I’ll be on base. I haven’t had these cats up here for a long while, and  I’m really quivering with anticipation. It’ll be great night! 8:30 to 11:30 at the Rummie.
