Nov 6- Alicia Olatuja The powerful singer fuses jazz, R&B, and world music for an intoxicating unique sound. Our host church is closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Old Sloop Coffeehouse is not presenting in-person concerts. Our remaining 2020 concerts have all been canceled, and it looks like it will be a while before we are back in our hall. As an instrumentalist, he is a master of a dozen different traditional instruments, most notably the rare and beautiful hammer dulcimer. His songwriting has been hailed by critics and singers around the globe. His thirty recordings have garnered every imaginable honor including seven Grammy nominations. He has produced over twenty albums of other artists, from traditional fiddlers to contemporary singer-songwriters to educational and documentary works. His books and instructional materials have introduced budding players to the joys of their own musicality. And his commitment to grassroots political organizations has put him on the front lines of many of the issues important to communities and workers. Mari has been entertaining audiences with her signature stage presence for over 25 years. She has sung back-up for Kenny Loggins, opened for and shared the stage with Tower of Power, WAR, the Moody Blues, Travis Tritt, the Average White Band, Alan Parsons, and many others. She has performed at the Obie Awards in Los Angeles, the Majestic Ventura Concert Theater, Santa Barbara’s Lobero and Granada Theatres, the Cabot, and Chevalier Theaters, the Santa Barbara Film Festival and hundreds of weddings, events, benefit concerts, and clubs from Massachusetts to California. As she put on her website 20 years ago, which still holds true today: Mari continues to pursue her life and musical career with gratitude and joy.
Virtual Music Series
The Rum Runners are a rising star North Shore-based string band that play a mix of gypsy jazz, folk, Americana, old time country, and fiddle tunes along with some original songs. The Rum Runners are: Joe Wilkins on guitar and vocals, Joe Kessler on fiddle/mandolin and Luke Conlin on standup bass. The band’s founder, Joe Wilkins, is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, studio musician and music instructor.
