THE 65th ANNIVERSARY SEASON:

Cape Ann Symphony proudly announces the launch of the orchestra’s 65thAnniversary Concert Season on Saturday, September 24 at 8 pm with the Big Night, Big Music Concert featuring symphonic masterpieces from Bernstein, Debussy and Respighi. The orchestra’s new season features the Cape Ann Symphony Chorus in the annual Holiday Pops Concert in November 2016; a romantic concert in March 2017 featuring cello soloist Blaise Dejardin and a Scandinavian Spectacular in May 2017 with the remarkable blind pianist Yoo Jin Noh making her CAS debut. Cape Ann Symphony Music Director and Conductor Yoichi Udagawa is eager to open the CAS 65th Anniversary Season, “The 65th Season of the Cape Ann Symphony starts off with a Big Night, Big Music program of Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, Claude Debussy’s La Mer and Ottorino Respighi’s Pines of Rome. These pieces are orchestral blockbusters, and the audience is going to go wild. We have Holiday Popsin November and in March, we are featuring virtuoso cellist Blaise Dejardin playing Saint-Saens gorgeous Cello Concerto. We finish the season in May with an all Scandinavian program with the remarkable pianist Yoo Jin Noh – blind since birth – performing the beautiful and lyrical Grieg Piano Concerto. We’re going to have an incredible season, and the musicians and I can’t wait to share it with our fabulous audiences.” All Cape Ann Symphony Concerts are held at the Manchester-Essex High School auditorium on 36 Lincoln Street in Manchester-by-the-Sea., MA. The Cape Ann Symphony Chorus under the direction of Rockport’s Wendy Betts joins the orchestra for this exciting celebration of holiday music.

 

ROMANTIC MASTERS

The Romantic Masters Concert celebrates the richness, beauty and power of music from the Romantic Era on Sunday, March 26 at 2 pm. Boston Symphony Orchestra cellist Blaise Dejardin joins the orchestra for the elegant Saint-Saens’ Cello Concerto. The program also includes Rossini’s La Scala di Seta and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8.

 

SCANDINAVIAN SPECTACULAR

Stirring works from Scandinavia are featured in Cape Ann Symphony’sScandinavian Spectacular on May 20 at 8 pm. The phenomenal blind pianist Yoo Jin Noh makes her CAS debut with the Grieg Piano Concerto. The CAS celebration of Scandinavia features audience favorite Sibelius’Finlandia and Nielsen’s Symphony No. 1.

HELP SAVE THE FIREWORKS!

WITHOUT AN INFUSION OF DONATIONS MADE BY FRIDAY AT MIDNIGHT, the Schooner Festival/Labor Day weekend fireworks will be cancelled. Gail McCarthy, senior staff writer for the Gloucester Times, reports that Barry Pett, who heads the Gloucester Fund and has organized Gloucester’s fireworks shows for the past 25 years, shares that there is only $4,000.00 in the kitty when approximately $12,500.00 is needed. Insurance costs alone are $1,000.

One Night only!!! This Friday 7-11pm at the Lobster Trap in Essex ,Ma (no they’re not opened again )Our band Manager and Tour bus mechanic rented the place for Joe and Karen’s arrival into Fishtown. Joe is only around town to see family and for a quick gig with The F.T. Band and our good friends The Steamers opening the show!. The F.T. Band has the pleasure of having caught and empty schedule night for the very busy ivory tickler John Hyde on Keys and ACCORDION!! We have to ask for a $10 cover which includes finger sandwiches and snacks etc. 2 bartenders to cover the bar. We ALL would like to thank our band manager Sean Nolan and Extreme Truck and Auto for setting up and paying for this night!

Manchester-by-the-Sea Architecture Walking Tour

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present an architectural walking tour through historic Manchester-by-the-Sea in conjunction with its exhibition Design/Build: The Drawings of Phillips & Holloran, Architects on view at the Cape Ann Museum through October 9.

Join Manchester Historical Museum curator, John Huss and preservation consultant, Bill Finch as they highlight the diverse architecture forming Manchester’s historic downtown. This tour will begin at the Manchester Historical Museum at 10 Union Street, Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 10. Guided walking tours are held rain or shine and last about 1 hour; participants should be comfortable being on their feet for that amount of time.

image003Image: Constructed in 1885 to house Seaside No. 1, the town’s first horse drawn fire engine, this handsome building on Central Street later became the headquarters for the Manchester Police Department into the 1970s. Today it is serves as a museum and home for the town’s two antique engines.

This program is $10 for CAM and MHM members / $20 for non-members (includes Cape Ann Museum admission). Space is limited; Advance tickets required.

SPINNING A WINTER HOME

The first of our Cecropia Moth caterpillars, nicknamed Mothra, is in the process of spinning her winter home, a fine silken enclosure. With the gossamer threads, she has woven several branches together, forming a V-shaped structure to secure the cocoon.

Surrounding leaves, like a blanket, are arranged around the cocoon and also secured with silk threads. The house is quite large, about four inches long and an inch and a half in diameter. As you can see from the Instagram, she has room enough to easily move within the cocoon. When completed, she will pupate within the case. Come next spring, Mothra will emerge from her winter home ready to mate and deposit eggs of the next generation. This is a fundraiser for the Gloucester Harvest Music Festival, which is a charity event to support the AGH Citizens Fund, a fundraising arm for our local hospital, Addison Gilbert. The AGH Citizens Fund is a non-profit, grass roots community based organization who raises money to donate funds directly back into the hospital for anything they may need. All proceeds go directly to the fund to support AGH! Voicing the Woods

An exhibition of Jeremy Adams’s organs and harpsichords

 On View at the Cape Ann Museum

The public is invited to an opening reception at the Museum on Saturday, October 22 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The exhibit runs through February 26, 2017.

Voicing the Woods: Jeremy Adams, Instrument Maker showcases the prodigious skills and artistry of Jeremy Adams, one of the most gifted musical instrument makers in New England. The exhibition, which will be held in the Cape Ann Museum’s 1,500 square foot special exhibitions gallery, will include a one-stop chamber organ, a demonstration organ and a selection of harpsichords, each built in their entirety by Adams in his workshop in Danvers, Massachusetts. In addition to the instruments that will be shown in the gallery, a selection of Adams’ furniture will be displayed in the Museum’s 1804 Captain Elias Davis House, offering an interesting contrast to the period furniture in the House.

 

Jeremy Adams started his musical training at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts, then entered into a six-year apprenticeship at the William Dowd harpsichord shop, also in Cambridge. Dowd, working in the 1950s with harpsichord maker Frank Hubbard, had sparked an international renaissance of interest in bringing authentically historic practices into performance and instrument building, and Adams, along with a handful of other young craftsmen, were the beneficiaries of his highly competitive and well regarded apprenticeship program. Adams began his professional career in the early 1960s, an auspicious time for early music enthusiasts, and quickly gained recognition for his skills both as a musician and a woodworker. He trained with C. B. Fisk (pipe organ design and manufacturer) in Gloucester for two years, during which time he honed his skills in reed voicing and tonal finishing, and in 1969 opened his own shop on the North Shore. Adam’s harpsichords, clavichords and pipe organs can be found in public and private collections around the world, including at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston; the Sapporo Episcopal Cathedral in Sapporo, Japan; Kyoto Fukkatu Kyokai in Kyoto, Japan; the Roxbury Latin School in West Roxbury, MA; the Maple Street Congregational Church in Danvers, MA; and the Annisquam Village Church in Gloucester, MA.

The instruments will be complemented by a series of photographs by Paul Cary Goldberg that document Jeremy’s studio and work process, highlight some of the exquisite detail and workmanship on individual pieces and offer a better understanding of the breadth and volume of his work.

Cape Ann TV’s Lunch & Learn Series continues on Wednesday, August 24th,2016 at 12pm with “How To Make A Movie On You iPhone” presented by Professional Video Producer, Ted Reed.

It used to cost thousands, if not millions of dollars to make a movie. But now the basic production tools are in the hands of millions of people. Your smart phone can capture better video than most top of the line professional cameras did only a few years ago; all you need are a few tips and a few (if any) accessories to produce a festival-ready film. Join independent producer Ted Reed for a Cape Ann TV Lunch and Learn discussion that will show you what you need to know and what works best to get high-quality video out of your iPhone. The principles are the same for almost any current smart phone; we’ll concentrate on what the iPhone can do and the free or cheap apps that will help you get your indie feature made.

 

Participants are encouraged to install the ProCam app* which we will do a quick tutorial on, but even the stock Camera app will do the trick.
