2013 Season, 61st Year of the International Dory Races

The weather is improving and eliminations to qualify to race the Canadians are only a few weeks away (Saturday, June 8th).  I hope your training is well on its way!  This May, we have undertaken an extremely popular “learn to row” program with 33 new rowers and many members volunteering to be mentors.  The program is a great success so far, but we still need mentors any Wednesday at 6PM or Sunday at 9AM to help with the rowing instruction.  Please let me know if you can help out!

On another note, there will be a change in the schedule of events this weekend.  We will postpone the race dory launch from Saturday May 18th to Sunday May 26th meeting at noon at Eastern Ave Self Storage (bring a small trailer if you have one).  In the mean time, this Sunday May 19th, we will be meeting at noon at Eastern Ave Self Storage to finish painting the race dories.  Sorry for the time change, but I have to fit in the learn to row sessions before.  Please let me know if you can make these events.

I look forward to seeing you all on the water!

Erik

Don’t forget Father’s Day presents from our apparel site linked to our website www.internationaldories.com or like us on facebook!

We could use a trailer or two for the 26th as well as a boat to tow them over to the town landing.

The Freedom Run

Muffy White submits-

This is a message for our awesome Cape Ann running community.

There is a new race this Memorial Day called the Freedom Run. http://cambridge5k.com/freedom/ This run is a hyper-patriotic celebration in honor of our service men and women.

A portion of the proceeds is going towards The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation – which is an organization created in honor of Glen Doherty that is committed to helping former special operations professionals transition and succeed into civilian life.  http://www.glendohertyfoundation.org image

Glen was one of the 2 former Navy SEALs who died defending the American Embassy in the Benghazi attack on September 11th, 2012.  He was an amazing man and a member of our family.  We are honored to have this race as a way to show our pride and love for him.  My son Callahan (age 7) will be running this race (his first 5K) for his Uncle Glen.  He is being joined by his best buddy Luke and an amazing group of Cape Ann runners. I want to give a special shout out to Ann Sanfilippo (she is Cal’s first grade teacher at EGS)who is among that group.  What an amazing feeling to be running a race with YOUR own teacher!  We would love to have more people from our community join us.  Everyone who runs with Team GDMF gets an awesome  team t-shirt in addition to the Freedom Run t-shirt — there is a great post race party sponsored by three breweries so after you run for Glen, you can have a few drinks for him too!  He would run and drink for you, that’s a guarantee.

Please contact me with any questions muffy.l.white@gmail.com.

Please register by Sunday May 12th in order get your Team GDMF t-shirt.

Get Your Stretch On- Physical Therapy Tip of The Month From Harmeling PT

Time to Get Moving

Unless they are avid skiers or snowboarders, most New Englanders tend to go into hibernation mode during the cold winter months. This generally means eating more and exercising less, both of which lead to unwanted weight gain.

Spring is sneaking up on us quickly. Before you know it, the days will be longer and the weather much warmer. As the ice thaws and snow melts, you may feel the urge to lace up your sneakers and get outside more often. One great way to shed winter weight is by consistently walking or jogging.

While regular cardiovascular exercise has many benefits, a sudden increase in activity level puts your body at risk for injuries. One way to prevent injury is by stretching the major muscle groups in your legs before and after activity. Doing the following stretches consistently will allow you to stay active, remain injury-free, and enjoy the beautiful weather that will be upon us in the upcoming months. Here are a few of our favorite stretches that you may want to try.

Calf stretch

Quad stretch

Hamstring stretch

Hip flexor Stretch

Try holding each stretch approximately 20 seconds, for 3-4 repetitions on each leg. Maintain each position, without bouncing, until you feel a moderate but comfortable pulling in your muscles. If you have any previous medical issues that may prevent you from doing these exercises, consult your physician prior to beginning.

One other thing to consider as you get more active is trying to exercise within your target heart rate. Doing so will maximize the health benefits that you will receive through exercise.

Heart rate is measured in beats per minute (bpm). One way to monitor your heart rate is using the old-fashioned manual method by which you take your pulse rate by feeling the artery in your wrist. There are also different heart rate monitors that you can purchase. These can make it easier to ensure that you are staying within your target heart rate.

To determine your individual target heart rate for exercise, use the following formula:

1. Subtract your age from 220. Then, multiply by 50%.

(220 – your age) x 0.50

2. Subtract your age from 220. Then, multiply by 85%.

(220 – your age) x 0.85

Your target heart rate should remain between these two numbers.

For instance, if you are 40 years old

1. 220 – 40 = 180

180 x 0.50 = 90 bpm

2. 220 – 40 = 180

180 x 0.85 = 153 bpm

Your target heart rate for exercise should stay between 90 and 153 beats per minute.

Once again, always consult your physician if you have any previous medical history that may limit your ability to exercise at this level.
