FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WRITER-PRODUCER HEATHER ATWOOD PRESENTS “THE COLOR OF LIGHT” VIDEOS ON LESSER-KNOWN CAPE ANN ARTISTS
The Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation welcomes Heather Atwood on Sunday, April 23 at 3:30 pm in the historic 1806 Meetinghouse, corner of Middle and Church Streets, as she presents the stories of Cape Ann artists and their contribution to the vibrant artistic tradition of the region in a series of narrated videos. In collaboration with Cape Ann Cinema, Atwood’s videos will be projected upon a large screen inside the darkened Meetinghouse.

Artists have been coming to Cape Ann for more than 200 years inspired by its magical mix of rock, sea, and air. Of the hundreds of eminent painters, sculptors, and printmakers who have visited Cape Ann, moved here, or even grew up here, only a few are well known and most have received little recognition for their artistic contribution. Heather Atwood is changing that dynamic in a series of video presentations titled, The Color of Light. In these videos, Atwood tells the stories of some of Cape Ann’s most talented artists, some whose influence has been felt at the national level, but about whom little is known. By sharing these stories, Atwood seeks to demonstrate how rich and significant the Cape Ann artistic tradition has been, and continues today.

Heather Atwood is a producer for 1623 Studios, Cape Ann’s local access television station, where she is co-host for “Cape Ann Today.” She is well known for her exploration of Cape Ann’s local food traditions. For nearly ten years she profiled local growers, fishers, bakers, chefs, and homecooks through her “Food for Thought” column in the Gloucester Daily Times. Her cookbook, In Cod We Trust, celebrating the cuisine of coastal Massachusetts, was published by Globe Pequot Press in 2015. Her stories have appeared in Edible Boston, North Shore Magazine, and South Shore Magazine. In 2017, Atwood traveled the country combining politics and food in a podcast titled The Midterms Election Podcast.

Tickets are available online at www.gloucestermeetinghouse.org or at the door. General seating $25; students with ID $5; children under 12 free.

Seaarts talk with local artist Kathy Artist

Searts: ART TALK

Kathy Roberts

What Is Your Medium?

My medium is painting, predominantly in watercolor, but I also enjoy experimenting with acrylics/mixed media and alcohol inks.

How long have you been an artist?

I have always been a creative person, experimenting with drawing and painting as a teen

and then taking my first formal watercolor workshop in my late teens where I got hooked and continued studying painting on a weekly basis while raising my family. Many breaks were taken from art while working as a Social Worker and family therapist in the Gloucester community. I’m currently a full time artist where you’ll find me in the “creator incubator,” my home studio and gallery.

Where do you get your inspiration?

There are so many things that influence my art: the changing seasons of New England inspire my landscapes, Gloucester’s seaside community reflects how I portray historic sites, beaches and seascapes which I’ve been very connected to since childhood. I also enjoy the art of the Impressionist Movement.

Weaving memories, traditions, family and my love for nature and food create a blanket of work that embraces who I am.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know?

After a year of isolation, with the news of covid, I felt I needed to plan an event to boost my spirits and bring hope, color and music to my neighborhood. I decided I would have a drive by art show, where people could stay in their cars, wear masks and view my paintings displayed on easels and a clothesline on my front yard! With Carol King music playing in the background many cars came through with the 10th car awarded a print. It was very successful and a lot of fun! I have also enjoyed being an art teacher at GHS and have taught adult & child watercolor classes from my home. Anyone whose interested in visiting my Gallery can call or text for an appointment @978-853-7825. I will have periodic art sales and open houses throughout the year that are open to the public. If you would like to be added to my email list just send me a text.

I AM MORE PROJECT

From our talented friend and artist, Amy Kerr

For Immediate Release

I AM MORE EXHIBIT AT NORTHSHORE MALL

Portraits and essays addressing how we are more than our mental illness, health diagnosis, disability or life situation.

January 24, 2023, Gloucester, MA—From January 21st through February 25th the traveling exhibit I Am More can be seen at the Northshore Mall in front of Macy’s. The exhibit features pastel and colored pencil portraits by Gloucester artist Amy Kerr, accompanied by essays written by the subjects describing how they are more than their life challenges. This is the third I Am More exhibit hosted by Northshore Mall, and this year new portraits address surviving Covid, growing up with Alopecia, coping with hearing loss and tinnitus, cultural differences in dealing with mental illness, depression in the clergy, and coming out as gay as a teen.  The exhibit will include mental health resources and emergency number cards, and for the first time will include Spanish translations for all of the essays.

“Amy Kerr’s I Am More project is combining art and personal storytelling in a unique and powerful way, to bring the issues of mental health awareness out of the shadows and into public spaces to engage communities and start conversations,” says John Rosenthal, Founder of PAARI (Police Assisted Addiction Recovery Initiative), Friends of Boston’s Homeless, and Stop Handgun Violence.
