Cape Ann Plein Air 2018 is winding down. There’s still time to see examples from the 2018 season at North Shore Art Association and Rockport Art Association Museum tomorrow. (Though keep in mind some work will have been removed from the walls as Cape Ann Plein Air artists head back home from Cape Ann and/or sales.)

“More than just kids’ stuff: Children’s literature inspires shows at the MFA and Cape Ann Museum” Boston Globe by Mark Feeney October 14, 2018

Mark Feeney highlights the Cape Ann Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in the Boston Globe Sunday Arts Museum Specials edition because of  concurrent spectacular and rare exhibitions: Winnie the Pooh Exploring a Classic opened September 22 and continues through January 6th, 2019 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston;  Virgina Lee Burton “The Little House: Herstory” opens November 3rd at the Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester and continues until March 31, 2019.

Mark Your Calendars! Here are Cape Ann Museum art shows inspired by children’s literature on display now, upcoming and not to miss:

  • Harrison Cady exhibition continues through November 9th retrospective of a dazzling Golden Age of Illustration legend, cartoonist and fine artist 
  • Virginia Lee Burton exhibition The Little House: Herstory opens November 3rd  Burton resided and worked in Gloucester, Mass., where she created some of America’s most popular and seminal children’s books. She received the Caldecott medal in 1943 for The Little House. Other books include Katy and the Big Snow and Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. She is renowned for her influential work as a Folly Cove textile designer and founder. Cape Ann Museum is the biggest repository of her art and archives. This 2018 survey will be gorgeous!

If you time it right there is a window of overlap where you can visit both the Harrison Cady and Virginia Lee Burton exhibitions.

  • A group show celebrating Cape Ann Reads new original children’s picture books by local artists and writers will open in January

“Barr-Klarman Foundations team up on 25 million arts initiative” Boston Globe October 3, 2018 

Cape Ann Museum received $375,000 Barr-Klarman investment funding in recognition of its stellar contribution to arts and culture in Massachusetts. The Barr Klarman Arts Initiative will disperse 25 million to 29 arts organizations; Cape Ann Museum is one of 3 North of Boston recipients.

Massive and beautiful Ken Gore painting repaired and returned to City Hall

Information labels were applied to City Hall walls with an epoxy that is ill advised near art. In early spring a label for this Ken Gore painting migrated to its surface and pulled away a small patch of paint.  Elizabeth Mehlin, an expert painting restorer in Ipswich, Massachusetts, repaired the accidental damage. She was able to tease out pulverized pieces of the paint stuck to remnant epoxy and match the loss so beautifully the fix is indiscernible. The painting is large and heavy. I suspect that its original custom frame was likely carved by multi media artist and Montserrat teacher, Alfred Czerepak (1928 – 1986). Gloucester’s Department of Public Works are such great stewards of the city’s art and history!

KENNETH (KEN) GORE
(American, b.Oct 2 1911 Elvira, Illinois -1990 d. Gloucester)
Ken Gore visited Gloucester for the first time in 1948 and settled into a home and studio within a year. Eventually he purchased 186 East Main Street where he resided and maintained a studio and gallery. (Today it’s Lynzariums, aka the Plant Shack, across from Beacon Marine Basin in East Gloucester.)  Gore was a student and art professor at the  Detroit Meisinger Art School. He served as president of both Rockport and North Shore Art Associations and for the Cape Ann Festival of the Arts. He performed regularly with the Cape Ann Symphony. He taught regularly. Apparently his personality was as joyous and musical as his painting: his art students and friends considered him “one of the nicest mans they’d ever met.” I’ve heard that his plein air road trips and truck “studio” were quite a sight.  I would love to see a picture of him on location by his truck. I do love seeing Jeff Weaver and his signature truck around town.

Organist Peter Krasinski returns for silent horror movie “Waxworks” at the Gloucester Meetinghouse October 21st

MAESTRO OF THE PIPE-ORGAN RETURNS

As Halloween approaches, maestro of the pipe-organ and sonic artist Peter Krasinski returns to the Meetinghouse to accompany the scary silent movie ‘Waxworks.’ As in past years, Peter will perform on the sonorous 1893 Hutchings-Fisk organ to the delight of the audience, young and old. A short film, featuring Douglas Fairbanks, called the ‘Electric House’ will open the show.

HIGHLIGHTS

‘Waxworks’ is a 1924 German horror-fantasy film (Das Wachsfigurenkabinett) directed by Paul Leni. The plot is about a poet hired by the owner of a wax museum in a circus to write tales about Harun al Raschid, Ivan the Terrible and Jack the Ripper. While writing, the poet and the daughter of the owner, Eva, fantasize the fantastic stories and fall in love for each other.  Its a thrilling horror movie for the whole family to enjoy.

LOCATION

Mary Rhinelander’s resonant show, Collective (un) Conscious, at Gallery 53 on Rocky Neck continues through October 14, 2018. The exhibition, a power packed installation of 12 x 12 mixed media panels, is as much about visual engagement and observation for the viewer as it’s chronicling an individual, accumulated and reflective life. There are plenty of unexpected juxtapostions, dark narratives, quirk and humor. Rhinelander has a sharp eye.

Dear I Am More subjects,

September was a super busy month for the project. The display and event at the Lahey Behavioral Health treatment center in Danvers to celebrate Recovery Month was very well-received. The staff shared how they would watch the residents reading the pieces and then walk away smiling. The Fish Tales live storytelling event with the theme “I Am More” was standing-room-only and Henry Ferrini of the Gloucester Writers Center called it “one of the best we’ve presented.”

Iain and I have finished hanging the October displays. Julia is on display at Emerson College, and the rest of you are at the Action Inc. headquarters in Gloucester. Action provides shelter and services for the homeless population, low income residents, and at-risk youth of Cape Ann, and everyone who receives services from them will pass by your portraits. Just in the short time we spent there hanging, there was an amazing response and I’ve already received feedback from a board member who saw it yesterday.

To round out the year, your portraits will be headed to Addison Gilbert Hospital in November, Magnolia Library in December, with lots of displays planned for 2019 including the Matz Gallery at the Sawyer Free library, Gloucester High School and North Shore Music Theatre. I’ve recently had inquiries from Rockport, Brattleboro, VT and Washington D.C., so stay tuned!

New Generations of Cape Ann Art: Leon Doucette and Peter Herbert ART@the Icehouse Exhibit Opening

New works by Gloucester painters Peter Herbert and Leon Doucette are featured in a special upcoming Artist Exhibition hosted at the Art@the Icehouse gallery in Gloucester’s “Fort” neighborhood.
“New Generations of Cape Ann Art” opens with an Opening Reception at 5 pm Saturday, October 13, 2018. ART@the Icehouse Gallery is located above Cape Pond Ice Company, Fort Wharf, 104 Commercial Street, Gloucester, MA.
Leon Doucette is a nationally recognized young portraitist and oil painter, who has won recent awards of the Guild of Boston Artists, and an international competition by the American Portrait Society in Washington, DC. Leon received his BFA from the New Hampshire Institute of Art, and serves on the Cape Ann Museum curatorial staff. Leon’s paintings are characterized by soft tonal modeling, diligent brushwork, and often solemn atmosphere.
Peter Herbert most recently exhibited his abstract landscapes at The Jane Deering Gallery and in Annisquam, and will share a new series of land and seascapes examining play of light and color on horizons, and fresh images of Gloucester harbor and Cape Pond Ice’s wharf and Icehouse. Peter studied at the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Students League of New York, with Brooklyn realist Andrew Reiss, as well as master painter David Levine, and locally under mentorships of Erma Wheeler and Gordon Goetemann.
Preparing together for this ART@the Icehouse exhibit at Gloucester’s iconic Cape Pond Ice, Peter and Leon have explored fresh, complementary synergy in their new work and color palette.
Saturday’s 5pm, October 13th Artist Reception is free and open to the public. This special exhibit extends through Sunday, November 4th, with hours Monday – Friday from 9 am – 5 pm, Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm, and Sundays from 11 am – 3 pm, and by appointment.

The Manchester Historical Museum opens the first major solo museum exhibit of Manchester based artist, Marion Hall, October 5th, 2018 with an artist’s reception from 6:30-8:30PM.  The show features recent watercolors and will be on view through November 10. The museum is located at 10 Union Street, within the historic Trask House (1823), Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts.
