RAIN OR SNOW, COME ON DOWN FOR LOBSTER TRAP TREE LIGHTING TONIGHT!
Despite the soggy wet snow and freezing temperatures, the Lobster Trap Tree lighting is taking place right on schedule. Caroling begins at 4:30.
ICE CASTLE ON MAIN STREET
Ward One City Councilor Scott Memhard shares from Main Street:
“David Brooks from Art Haven resurrects the Christmas Ice Castle on Main Street for today’s Gloucester Middle Street Walk and Lobster Trap Christmas Tree lighting, with help from Larry and Dylan at Cape Pond Ice.
A few photos from this morning’s ice delivery, before the kid’s ice sculpting begins, and the predicted snow dresses it all up.”
THE PHOENIX RISES
Mr. Swan is also know as Papa Swan and Buddy to his human friends, and The Boss-of-the-Pond to all avian creatures, from Rockport Harbor to Gloucester Harbor. He will be turning at the very least 28-years-old in 2018. We know this because a gentleman named Skip has been keeping watch over Mr. Swan, along with his first mate, second mate, and cygnets, beginning in the year 1992. A male Mute Swan cannot mate until he is a minimum of two years old and even that age would be considered unusually young.
When Mr. Swan lifts out of the water to stretch his wings as he is doing in the photo below, he reminds me of the story of the Phoenix in Greek mythology. Not only because he has lived a very long life of at least 28 years, which is extraordinary for a wild swan, but because he has an incredible ability to adapt to a constantly changing environment, and to rise from the depths of sorrow. He has survived near capture, physical injuries, boats in the harbors, coyotes, snapping turtles, and the loss of not one, but two mates. He was so deeply distraught after his second mate was killed by a coyote, many of us worried whether or not he would survive. But he has, and magnificently so.

SCENES FROM THE LAST NIGHT OF OPEN STUDIO LOBSTER TRAP TREE BUOY PAINTING AND WHY WE LOVE CAPE ANN ART HAVEN!
Thank you to Cape Ann Art Haven’s program director Cathy Kelley and executive director Traci Thayne Corbett for the invitation to photograph this year’s Lobster Trap Tree lighting and buoy painting. The joy was all mine–the children’s enthusiasm, the pride and joy on their faces, the parent’s participation, and the priceless gift of community spirit make this one of Cape Ann’s most cherished (and most fun) holiday traditions. And it has been wonderful to see how conscientiously Traci and Cathy run the program and how caring and thoughtful they are with the children.
Did you know that Cape Art Haven buoy painting is 100 percent FREE and open to the entire community?
What has become a much beloved Cape Ann tradition is a way of saying thank you from Art Haven to the community. If you haven’t already done so, please consider donating to this tremendously worthwhile organization. Not only is buoy painting free, but all the programs Art Haven offers are available to everyone, whether or not they have the ability to pay. Visit the Cape Ann Art Haven website here to learn more about classes, scholarships, the teen guild, and more.
So, please, donate to Art Haven today!

MAYOR SEFATIA AND TONNO’S ANTHONY CATURANO SUGO VS. GRAVY GREAT COOK-OFF ROUND TWO!
Warren Waugh, Mayor Sefatia, Karen Hanson
Mayor Sefatia and her team, Chef Anthony Caturano and the Tonno staff, and Warren Waugh with Cidalia Schwartz and the Lyon-Waugh Auto Group team brought the community together for a fabulous lunch of the Mayor’s “sugo” versus the Chef’s “gravy.” The luncheon included steaming bowls of polenta and sausage with gravy versus homemade pasta and meatballs dressed with sugo. Both were wonderfully delicious! Tori Amos and Brian King provided lovely background music and Scottie Mac was the DJ.
Sadly, the day’s event took place without Anthony’s presence. His sister Christina Caturano Ryan passed away from breast cancer several days ago. She was only forty one and left two young children. Anthony was attending Christina’s funeral today. Despite her tragic death, Anthony insisted that the fundraiser take place. His team did a phenomenal job. The staff donated their time and all funds raised goes to the care of cancer patients. We wish to offer our most heartfelt condolences to Anthony.
Hernan, Aaron, and Neal
Tremendous shout out to the Tonno staff for donating their time today. They are: Chef Neal Maver, AAron Budak, Hernan Castro, Toni Armstrong, Frank DiMercurio, and Bryan Testaverde.

BRILLIANT DECEMBER SUPER MOON OVER GLOUCESTER CITY SKYLINE
The only super moon of 2017, December’s full moon was fittingly named by Native American tribes the “Long Night’s Moon,” the “Frost Moon,” and the “Cold Moon.” In Europe, December’s full moon is called the “Yule Moon.”
December’s full moon kicks off a trilogy of super moons. The next super moon is January 1st, 2018 and the following super moon is January 31st, 2018 which also makes it a “Blue Moon,” (the second of two full moons in a month is called a Blue Moon).
A BEAUTIFUL SNOWY OWL COMES TO GLOUCESTER!
Photos contributed by Denise Merlino
I think this is the first reported Snowy Owl to arrive to Gloucester in what looks to be quite possibly a fabulous year for Snowy Owls.
READERS, please continue to let us know of your Snowy Owl sightings. Thank you!
Good Morning Gloucester FOBs (Friends of the Blog) Denise Merlino and John Felock write,
Hi Joey
I remember when the Snowy Owl visited you, well she is back! We named her Samantha the Snowy Owl. She was seen in our back yard and she is beautiful. Everyone keep an eye out for her.
Best

PEACE
The internationally recognized “peace sign” was designed by Gerald Holtom as the logo for a group at the forefront of the peace movement in the United Kingdom known as the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. The peace sign was adopted by counterculture and antiwar activists around the globe.

SCENES FROM ART HAVEN’S LOBSTER TRAP TREE COMMUNITY-WIDE BUOY PAINTING TODAY
Throngs of young painters filled Art Haven today at the community-wide buoy painting for Gloucester’s very special Lobster Trap Tree. A line formed out the door, but it wasn’t a long wait before kids were seated at a work table, supplied with blank buoys, paints, and brushes.
With thanks to founder David Brooks, executive director Traci Thayne Corbett, and assisted by a tremendous team of staff and volunteers, the children are participating in a wonderful holiday event, sharing a bit of Gloucester culture, holiday tradition, and FUN!
