Brett Nick Max Ramsey Gloucester Schooner Fest welcome 2016 copyright Kim SmithWhat a treat to tag along with Gloucester’s own Schooner Festival welcoming committee Brett Ramsey and his sons Max and Nick. Each year Brett purchases and assembles baskets of fresh fruit. Along with loaves of yummy bread still warm from Virgilio’s ovens (donated by Joe Virgilio), Brett and his family welcome each and every participating schooner. You could tell that the recipients were really grateful and touched by the gesture.

Special shout out to GMG FOB Schooner Green Dragon’s captain Al Bezanson. I was out filming early this morning and stopped by Rocky Neck Accommodations to say hello to Al and his wife Phyllis. This was Al’s idea to cover the Schooner Fest welcome for GMG, so thank you Al Bezanson!!

As far as I know, this is the very first time ever that gorgeous Alpaca yarn from Alpacas raised right here on Cape Ann will be available for sale. Not only will she be carrying skeins of yarn, but also beautiful, warm (and very importantly, not itchy) Alpaca hats, mittens, scarves, socks, and hand warmers. I bought two pair of hand warmers on the spot! Last year I had the joy of visiting Island Alpaca on Martha’s Vineyard and think that the Marshall’s are running their growing Alpaca Farm with similar integrity. This could be a fantastic local industry and I think it will be great if we all support Angela and Pat in this exciting endeavor. They now have 23 Alpacas, including the four adorables born this summer. Harumby is the last of the summer babies and today she is one week old. Go see!

WONDERFUL creatures are currently migrating through our shores. How blessed are we who live along the Atlantic Flyway. Whether traveling by shore or by sea, there is this great and continual movement of life happening always in our midst.

Many thanks to my friend Jeff Denoncour, Trustees of Reservations Ecologist for the Northeast Region, for assistance with identifying the birds. I met Jeff earlier this summer when he kindly took me out to the tippy far end of Cranes to film the Piping Plovers nesting there.

Additionally we have seven tiny Monarch caterpillars in terrariums. It’s so late in the season for these teeny ones. Last year at this time we were releasing adult butterflies and I worry that they are not going to pupate in time to successfully migrate to Mexico. The caterpillars are too small to handle, but if any of the kids in our community would like to come see, please comment in the comment section or email me at kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com. The last of the Cecropia Moth caterpillars has not yet pupated and he is fun to watch as well.

The above group of four photos are of either a pair of Red Knots or White-rumped Sandpipers in non breeding plumage. The White-rumped Sandpiper is thought to migrate an even greater distance than the Red Knot, from Canada’s Arctic Islands to the Southern tip of South America, and some further still to islands near the Antarctic Peninsula. These shy birds did not allow for human interest and the photos were taken at some distance.

Gloucester Stage Company continues its 37th season of professional theater on Cape Ann with the New England premiere of Peter Sinn Nachtrieb’s The Totalitarians from September 1 through September 24 at 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA. Gloucester Stage Managing Director Jeff Zinn makes his Gloucester Stage directing debut with this off-the-wall-satire of the zany world of politics. Peter Sinn Nachtrieb has written a not-so-tall-tale of an oligarchic takeover led by a Palinesque Manchurian candidate, and possibly thwarted by a hapless one-man commando squad…in Nebraska? This raucous dark comedy about the state of modern political discourse, modern relationships, and how easy it is to believe truths without facts features a cast of GSC veterans Amanda Collins and Lewis D. Wheeler, and GSC newcomers Breean Julian and Alex Portenko. According to Director Zinn, “As we all watch, with our jaws dropped, the daily excesses of candidates and hear the commentators remark, ‘you can’t make this stuff up,’ I am incredibly grateful to Peter Nachtreib for ‘making stuff up’ that rises to the occasion. Some may find the humor in The Totalitarians outrageous, but in this political moment I believe outrage is exactly what we need.”

San Francisco-based playwright Peter Sinn Nachtrieb’s play, The Totalitarians was commissioned through the National New Play Network and New Dramatists Full Stage USA program and premiered in 2014 at Southern Rep, Woolly Mammoth and Z Space. The Totalitarians will soon be published by Dramatists Play Service. Mr. Sinn Nachtrieb’s other works include boom, TCG’s most produced play 2009-10; BOB, the winner of the Barrie and Bernice Stavis Award at the 2011 Humana Festival for New American Plays at Actor’s Theatre of Louisville; T.I.C. (Trenchcoat In Common), Hunter Gatherers, winner of the 2007 ATCA/Steinberg New Play Award and the 2007 Will Glickman Prize; Colorado; and Litter: The True Story of the Framingham Dodecutuplets. His work has been seen off-Broadway and across the country including at Ars Nova, SPF, Woolly Mammoth, Seattle Repertory, Actors Theatre of Louisville, San Diego Rep, and in the Bay Area at A.C.T., Encore Theatre, Killing My Lobster, Marin Theatre Company, Impact Theatre, and The Bay Area Playwrights Festival. Projects in process include an original musical called Fall Springs: A MusicalDisaster (with composer/lyricist Nikko Tsakalakos) and the Z Space commission, A House Tour of the Infamous Porter Family Mansion led by guide Weston Ludlow Londonderry. Mr. Sinn Nachtrieb holds a degree in Theater and Biology from Brown and an MFA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University. He is a member of New Dramatists and is the Playwright in Residence at Z Space in San Francisco.

Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshops is accepting students 5-19 for the Fall Session.  The six week Youth Acting Workshop Fall Session meets for a total of four hours per week through Saturday, October 15. The Fall Session features expanded class hours & lower tuition. The Fall 2016 Session features Acting Instruction taught by award winning actress, Harvard graduate and Gloucester native Heidi Dallin; Lighting Design taught by GSC Master Electrician PJ Strachman; Sound Design taught by The Totalitarians Sound Designer David Remedios and a special course incorporating play writing, dramaturgy and music in “How To Make A Musical” taught by guest instructor Tufts graduate and Danvers native Sarah Vandewalle.

Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshops are designed to provide young people an outlet to nurture their creative potential through developing self-confidence, communication and teamwork skills to use in their daily life as well as introducing them to the skills necessary for professional theatre.

Registration is open for the FALL 2016 Session. Students are divided in classes according to age.  The Children’s Class (ages 5-10) meets Fridays, 4-6pm and Saturdays, 11-1pm. The Teen Class (ages 11-19) meets Saturdays, 9-1pm Class size is limited and registration is on a first come basis. BREAKING SUPER SPECTACULAR EXCITING FIREWORKS NEWS!!!

THE FIREWORKS ARE A GO!!! Hold onto your hats, we’re going to be treated to an extra fantabulous spectacular display!

Barry Pett shares that the response for requests for assistance with the Schooner Festival/Labor Day Weekend fireworks show has been tremendous. He gives a heartfelt thanks to everyone for their contributions. He’d also like folks to be aware that the City contributes greatly, with support from Mayor Romeo Theken’s administration, the Police and Fire Departments, and the DPW.

Barry provided some history about the fireworks, which have been annually displayed from Stage Fort Park since at least 1880. This beautifully poetic Winslow Homer watercolor titled Sailboat and Fourth of July Fireworks, dated July 4th, 1880, was painted during the year that Homer lived on Ten Pound Island. Unfortunately, the painting is currently hidden away in storage at the Fogg Art Museum. It is Barry’s hope that for Gloucester’s quadricentennial the painting will travel to Gloucester and be displayed at the Cape Ann Museum.

Barry Pett has been creating Gloucester’s fireworks shows for over twenty five years.

I am super excited to share that my friend Lyda Kuth will be giving a presentation on architect Eleanor Raymond as part of the lecture series for the Cape Ann Museum’s Design/Build summer exhibit. You may have met Lyda when she gave a screening of her beautiful film Love and Other Anxieties at the Cape Ann Cinema. The lecture will be held on Thursday, September 29 at 7:00 p.m. I am sure it is going to be a fantastic talk!

About Eleanor Raymond: Eleanor Raymond (1887-1989) was a pioneering woman in the field of architecture during the mid-20th century. A graduate of the Cambridge School of Art and Landscape Architecture for Women, Eleanor Raymond was a noted innovator partnering with solar energy researcher Dr. Mária Telkes to design one of the first successful solar-heated buildings in the Northeast. On Cape Ann, Raymond designed homes for artist Natalie Hays Hammond, anthropologist Carlton S. Coon and a summer cottage for herself overlooking Gloucester’s outer harbor.

About Lyda: She is an independent filmmaker and Executive Director of the LEF Foundation, which supports New England independent documentary filmmakers. She has been recognized by the Massachusetts Cultural Council with the prestigious Commonwealth Award and honored by Women in Film and Video New England with an Image Award.

Cape Ann Symphony proudly announces the launch of the orchestra’s 65thAnniversary Concert Season on Saturday, September 24 at 8 pm with the Big Night, Big Music Concert featuring symphonic masterpieces from Bernstein, Debussy and Respighi. The orchestra’s new season features the Cape Ann Symphony Chorus in the annual Holiday Pops Concert in November 2016; a romantic concert in March 2017 featuring cello soloist Blaise Dejardin and a Scandinavian Spectacular in May 2017 with the remarkable blind pianist Yoo Jin Noh making her CAS debut. Cape Ann Symphony Music Director and Conductor Yoichi Udagawa is eager to open the CAS 65th Anniversary Season, “The 65th Season of the Cape Ann Symphony starts off with a Big Night, Big Music program of Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, Claude Debussy’s La Mer and Ottorino Respighi’s Pines of Rome. Gail McCarthy, senior staff writer for the Gloucester Times, reports that Barry Pett, who heads the Gloucester Fund and has organized Gloucester’s fireworks shows for the past 25 years, shares that there is only $4,000.00 in the kitty when approximately $12,500.00 is needed. Insurance costs alone are $1,000.

Manchester-by-the-Sea Architecture Walking Tour

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present an architectural walking tour through historic Manchester-by-the-Sea in conjunction with its exhibition Design/Build: The Drawings of Phillips & Holloran, Architects on view at the Cape Ann Museum through October 9.

Join Manchester Historical Museum curator, John Huss and preservation consultant, Bill Finch as they highlight the diverse architecture forming Manchester’s historic downtown. This tour will begin at the Manchester Historical Museum at 10 Union Street, Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 10. Guided walking tours are held rain or shine and last about 1 hour; participants should be comfortable being on their feet for that amount of time.

image003Image: Constructed in 1885 to house Seaside No. 1, the town’s first horse drawn fire engine, this handsome building on Central Street later became the headquarters for the Manchester Police Department into the 1970s. Today it is serves as a museum and home for the town’s two antique engines.
