Just in case you haven’t noticed, North Shore 104.9’s “Curtain Up” host, Aurelia Nelson, has been inviting Cape Ann rock stars to be her guests more frequently of late and it points to a trend of featuring locals on the station as a whole (see some examples here).
Tomorrow (SUNDAY) at 9AM, she does it again, this time with Festival By The Sea producer Chris Langathianos and headliner Chris Trapper. You’ll get a sneak preview of festival highlights and hear Chris perform. Definitely worth getting up for — even if you stay out late at tonight’s Block Party.
And just in case you’re not quite sure which of tonight’s excellent shows to catch, here’s a list of all live music to help you decide.

Lots of parents take their kids to the Harbor Loop concerts and the Block Party and everybody has fun. Tomorrow (SUNDAY) is another great chance to get the kids out to hear music with 14 live shows starting between 11am and 7pm — and excellent evening shows to follow for those who, like us, keep the kids up late.
Any rumors you may hear about the block party being cancelled are FALSE. The Block Party is ON. If weather forces us to cancel, we will post the cancellation by 4pm tomorrow (Saturday) right here on GMG!
Here’s a new feature for tomorrow’s (SAT) Downtown Block Party: Win Cool Prizes! The Block Party’s new Marketplace at the Cape Ann Savings Bank Plaza between Hancock and Porter Streets (see map) has a new game called Glosta-opoly played on a brand new Monopoly-style board created by members of Art Haven.
Revised Entertainment Schedule There have been a couple of minor changes to the entertainment — click here for all entertainment by stage. Click here for all musical entertainment by time.
Don’t sweat the parking. I’m always surprised when I hear people complain about parking in Gloucester. Honestly, I’ve never had trouble finding a parking space — not even during Fiesta. Last night I went to the Harbor Loop Concert. I got there after it started on a beautiful summer night in the height of the tourist season when every local hotel is full and what do you know? I found a parking space on Rogers Street at Harbor Loop! In fact I had my choice of at least half a dozen free (after 6) spots on Rogers within earshot of the music. Plus there were plenty of spaces at I4-C2. So don’t worry about the few Main Street parking spots that are not available during the Block Party. Trust me. You won’t have a problem finding a space within a couple minutes walk.

“Quarry Dance 1”…performed by the Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre at Halibut Point State Park in Rockport, Mass. during the summer of 2012 was so successful that Windhover Performing Arts Center (located in Rockport, Mass) has invited choreographer, Dušan Týnek and his New York based modern dance company to develop a second installment , “Quarry Dance 2.”
Group photo of the dance company performing
This site-specific dance will be performed at privately owned Valley Pit Quarry, located at 7 Leverett Street in Lanesville (Gloucester) on Friday, July 26 and Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 5:30p.m. and is open to the public free of charge. Contributions are welcome. Parking is available at the Lanesville Congregational Church at 1120 Washington Street across from Leverett Street on both days. Parking is also available at the Lanesville Community Center at 8 Vulcan Street on Friday, July 26thonly. Street parking is allowed on Emerald Street, as well as on one side of Washington Street. The performance will last about one hour.
Valley Pit Quarry has a unique history because its former owner, Sylvester Ahola, a Lanesville native, was one of the most talented and famous musicians of the 1920’s and 30’s, playing lead trumpet with over a dozen big bands and making over 2,000 records. After retirement in 1940’s, he hosted many sailing parties at the quarry as a way of celebrating these man-made wonders.
Today, almost 100 years later, Dušan Týnek takes on the challenge by creating a new dance that will reflect upon this special place and generate a new and fresh narrative. The dance will move naturally through the environment using perspective and the unique architecture created by the granite ledges, overhangs, cracks, cliffs and terraces. And the dancers will also be in contact with the water, using its sounds as an additional dimension to the dance. The entire quarry and its surroundings will become a stage.
The Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre is a dynamic, contemporary dance company based in Brooklyn, NY. Recently named one of the top 5 New York City dance companies of the year by the New York Times, they have toured throughout the U.S, Europe and Russia and have recently completed a series of successful performances at Baruch College in New York City. In September, they are scheduled to perform at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in celebration of the company’s 10th anniversary. “ Terrific…striking…a high level of invention… Mr. Týnek is an undoubted talent.” NYTimes
Chairs will be provided for the audience, but people are welcome to bring their own chairs too, and people are encouraged to bring their own water and/or soft drinks.
Windhover is grateful to Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation for their support and the funding which has made this event possible. We also wish to thank the Rockport and Gloucester Cultural Councils and The Donor Advised Fund of the Boston Foundation for their important contributions, as well as our many friends and supporters. We could not have achieved this without all of you.

@ GLOUCESTER UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH
Corner of Middle and Church Streets
Open to the Public with Free-Will Offering
Social Gathering Afterwards with Refreshments
Detailed Information:
The Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church is pleased to announce the second in a series called Music & Meditation in the Meetinghouse (MMM) that offers Cape Ann residents and visitors a unique and varied experience of beautiful music and relaxing meditation in the Gloucester’s oldest standing church. It is held in the candle-lit, early-evening setting of the church’s 1806 Sanctuary with golden light beaming through the stained glass windows. Lanesville’s Mindfulness Meditation practitioner Dr. Michael Bresnan will team up with the Dorymates, Tony Hilliard and Janet Ruth Young, presenting a combination of meditation and heartfelt music for guitar and voice.
Following the event there is a collation with light refreshments in the church’s Entrance House, giving participants the opportunity to meet the leaders and each other in a convivial atmosphere. The Sanctuary is accessible for persons with disabilities via the Church Street Entrance. A free-will offering will be received and everyone is welcome.
Meditation Description:
Mindfulness has its roots in Buddhist meditative practice, and involves bringing one’s attention to subjective present moment experience without judgment – without deciding whether it is “good” or “bad.” It means coming out of the world of conceptual thought in which we tend to spend most of our lives and connecting once again with the actuality of our life in the moment. By opening to experience just as it is, we create the space for life to unfold in a very different way. This practice has been the focus of a tremendous amount of scholarly research in recent years, with numerous studies demonstrating profound improvements in physiological and psychological health, even over short periods of practice.
Dr. Bresnan, whose practice is newly established in Lanesville, will lead the group through an introductory experience in mindfulness meditation. The mindfulness meditation will serve as an invitation for attendees to connect in a more vivid way to the musical portion of the program.
The Dorymates:
Singer and guitarist Tony Hilliard and his wife Janet Ruth Young perform duets of ballads and soulful music in haunting harmonies. Their love for each other and for humanity is evident in the lyrics and songs they present. Tony works as an EMT with persons in assisted living and Janet is an author and speaker on chronic depression and related psychological impairments. They are active in social justice issues on the North Shore and are members of the Gloucester UU Church.

You might recognize him as Chelsea Berry’s guitarist (see these videos) or Gary Backstrom’s drummer (see this video). Mike Doyle is a virtuoso on both. I once asked him which he prefered: drums or guitar. “Do you have kids?” he replied. “Yup,” I answered. “Which one do you like better?”
Well Mike has a new EP and it’s certainly worth getting. See what he has to say about it:
“The Storm Colors EP” is a 3-track EP of original music, performed by Michael Thomas Doyle and Mike Moschetto at the Office Recording in North Andover. Michael, a multi-instrumentalist, captures an ethereal, but punchy and catchy atmosphere in his debut EP. With the help of Mike Moschetto, engineering and producing the EP, Michael showcases his songwriting and arrangement abilities, as well as his virtuosity in this short-but-sweet recording. “The Storm Colors EP” is available at michaelthomasdoylemusic.bandcamp.com for digital download.

You’ve heard of season tickets, right? Over the past few years, theatres and music venues have improved on that concept, offering something they call Flex Subscriptions, which are better than season tickets:
You get the best seats.
You don’t have to buy a ticket to every concert in the season in order to save money.
You can cherry pick the concerts you want to see by selecting from all concerts presented during the entire season.
You can exchange one concert for another after you purchase tickets.
As you might expect, Cape Ann’s #1 award-winning music venue, Shalin Liu Performance Center offers Flex Subscriptions, which are now on sale for their 2013-2014 season. And they’ve added an additional benefit — you don’t pay any processing fee for additional concerts you add to your Flex Subscription. Plus, at Rockport Music, all you have to do is buy tickets to 4 different concerts to save 10% (see details here). If you’ve been following our early warning posts, you’ll know that Rockport Music concerts usually sell out. So check out their season below and go buy your tickets now. Then you can relax!

The ensemble expanded to a wind quintet in 1989 and has since premiered almost 50 new works and championed many others. As recipients of Chamber Music America’s “Residency Partnership Grant” in 2004, the Arcadian Winds provided a year-long intensive chamber music experience for students in the Boston Public Schools, culminating in a performance of a commissioned piece by Daniel Pinkham for the programs’ top wind players. With a strong commitment to education, the group continues to bring chamber and contemporary music into the public, private and community schools in the Boston Area including ongoing work as faculty with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Just because you can get the weather on your phone doesn’t mean the prediction has gotten any better. As of right now, tonight’s Harbor Loop Concert is cancelled due to bad weather. It was raining when we talked to Bradley Royds about this, but the sun is coming out now. You just never know what’s going to happen, so be sure to check the local live music listings for last minute changes.
Gloucester weather may be unpredictable, but here’s a prediction you can count on: You can go out tonight — every night — and have a great time without even knowing what the weather will be. This is the advantage of living in a town with a vibrant music, entertainment & cultural scene — something Patty Hecht pointed out at last night’s Downtown Visioning Meeting at City Hall (see Joey’s interview with Patty @ 191 Main St. here).
So don’t fret about it. Just go downtown. If the weather cooperates, you can sit, eat and be entertained outside. If not, you can stroll around in the rain (kinda fun in the summer) and pop in and out of all the restaurants offering music until the wee hours of tomorrow morning (see schedule here). And don’t forget to be grateful that you live here.
