BOIL WATER ORDER STILL IN EFFECT
OUTDOOR WATER BAN LIFTED: We have a sufficient quantity of water in Bond Hill storage and the water level is continuing to rise. People are encouraged to resume their outdoor water use as this will help draw chlorine into the water system. If at any time the situation unexpectedly changes, the outdoor water ban could be reinstated. Although we expect to stop receiving water from our neighbors, we intend to leave the temporary lines in place should we need to resume. |

Staff Writer– Gloucester Daily Times
The Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center, now in its 10th year, has created a special day for land-bound visitors to the Schooner Festival.
Landlubbers will have a smorgasbord of activities to choose from during its seventh Heritage Day this Saturday.
“We’re pleased that we can participate to provide more land-based activities, for families in particular, because there are lots of wonderful things to see, but for many of them you have to be on the water. So the Heritage Day allows us to give exposure to many things,” center director Harriet Webster said.
The center’s exhibits and aquarium will be open free of charge throughout the day, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Canada’s Bluenose II will be berthed at the center from tomorrow through Monday and will offer free public deck tours Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and at other times to be decided throughout the weekend. Other vessels docked at the center and available for dockside viewing include the Roseway, the Pride of Baltimore and the Unicorn.
The Harbor Loop concert last night had been rescheduled from earlier in the summer. Hoodoo Revelator rocked the hill in the final concert of the season.

Sorting leaves to figure out dominant tree types in the “Outdoor Classroom.” From Kestrel’s Facebook page
As many of you know, I’m combining a personal journey — an attempt to climb all 48 New Hampshire 4,000 footers in a single summer — with an effort to raise money for an environmental education group, Kestrel Educational Adventures.
For a modest nonprofit with a tiny staff and even tinier budget, Kestrel has a powerful impact. Its instructors connect hundreds of North Shore elementary school students to nature — real nature, in all its wet, smelly, messy glory. Sometimes that means bringing animals into the classroom to help explain how ecosystems work. Sometimes it means taking kids into the woods to see vernal ponds teeming with life. This year alone, Kestrel’s naturalists expect to work with more than 1,700 students at 23 partner schools.
Kestrel also runs successful after-school Conservation Clubs in Ipswich and Gloucester. The boy, a member of the Gloucester club, spent much of last spring helping to build an osprey nesting platform along the Annisquam River. This spring they’ve been outside for almost every meeting; Lucas comes home with his shoes and pants covered in mud, muck and grass.
All of this is done on a budget that, at under $40,000 a year, could charitably be described as ’shoestring.’ Times are tough for nonprofits these days, especially the smaller ones. Sometimes folks don’t take pay for the work they do. Budget-strapped, test-centered schools don’t have the money to offer much beyond the basics of environmental education.
So why does it matter?
Kids need nature. Their bodies, minds and souls crave it. And we’re not giving it to them. If anything, we’re taking it away.
Author Richard Louv puts it this way in his book, “Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder”:
“The shift in our relationship to the natural world is startling, even in settings that one would assume are devoted to nature. Not that long ago, summer camp was a place where you camped, hiked in the woods, learned about plants and animals, or told firelight stories about ghosts or mountain lions. As likely as not today, “summer camp” is a weight-loss camp, or a computer camp. For a new generation, nature is more abstraction than reality. Increasingly, nature is something to watch, to consume, to wear — to ignore. A recent television ad depicts a four-wheel-drive SUV racing along a breathtakingly beautiful mountain stream — while in the backseat two people watch a movie on a flip-down video screen, oblivious to the landscape and water beyond the windows.”
Bringing kids into contact with the outdoors has several benefits. Studies have shown it helps soothe the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, improve science test scores and boost a child’s physical activity and overall health.

Congratulations, Stephanie! You can pick up your t-shirt down at Capt. Joe’s! How did you get these so quickly?? It took Stephanie less than 24 hours to get them all!

Here are the signs that Hedge photographed and then created this great contest-

A huge THANK YOU to Hedge for the time and effort he put in to making this fun for all who participated!
Hedge also offered up his prize- “You can give the winner the shirt I never picked up at Capt. Joe’s from a couple of weeks back. My penance for giving everyone sore necks from looking up at signs!”
Watta guy!

L is in the name of the West End shop in the photo above.
Remember, don’t post your answer once you figure it out. But you can boast that you got it!! 🙂
Good luck!

Good luck!

As a result of the continues presence of coliform bacteria in the Gloucester water supply, representatives from the City of Gloucester, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), United Water (the city’s contract operator for the city’s water treatment plants), New England Civil Engineering, Camp Dresser McKee, Inc. (qualified consultants with expertise in water systems) along with local and state elected officials met on Monday, August 30, 2009 in order to assess the current water emergency, and determine the appropriate course of action as we move forward. At that time the following action plan was created: |

This great idea was sent in by “Hedge”.
I’ll let him explain-
“Here’s the idea behind this contest. Pictures were taken of different signs from businesses in Gloucester. One letter was taken from each sign and used to spell a word.
The object of the contest is to identify each business by the letters used.”
We’ll get you started by giving you one:
The first “e” comes from this sign-
So the best way to do this is to print out the “Gloucester” above and take it with you when you’re downtown and thereabout. This is hard, but your mind records much more than you think it does. Get as many as you can and submit your answers. I’ll give clues if they’re needed.
Well, here we go!! Good luck and have fun!!
A big thank you to “Hedge” for this contest!

Yesterday was one of those days when you yearn for the days before our dependency on electronics. You may remember my ranting about Comcast a few weeks ago. Well, we gave them all the patience we had. They came out and did a bunch of re-wiring, etc. Thursday, and it worked great for 12 hours.
Yesterday, service went down. Of course this means no internet or phone. So I called on my cell, and a woman in the corporate office said it was a node issue in our area. Great.
In the meantime, my cell phone died. I noticed that we had service, and connected my phone to the computer. Itunes popped up with an update for the phone and starts the process. Halfway through, I kicked myself for doing it. The phone froze completely. The internet and home phone were down. My main hard drive ran out of space. So from 8:30 last night until this morning my umbilical cord was severed, and I was going into shock.
I survived. The internet and phone were back on this morning. I googled answers to my iPhone issue and actually figured it out. The I made a call to Verizon to solve my Comcast fiasco.
I still remember our first telephone number 1465-M! A simpler life for sure.

With the great weather last night, the hill on Harbor Loop was packed. The pizza and other food vendors stayed open after the Farmer’ Market closed. Kids were everywhere. The Megan McKenzie Band opened the concert and rocked the house. To hear the band, click here.

The sun set, and Phat Maxx took the stage. The kids accepted the band’s invitation to come onto the stage and little rockers danced the night away.

Next week is the last concert with Hoodoo Revelator who had to be rescheduled because of bad weather early this summer.
