Can anyone identify this location?

My friend Don Dunsky sent me this photo with this note:

“Neither Peter Vadala, the appraiser and myself can identify the street. We know it is probably on Portugee hill somewhere.

(It could be a photo from 1951-1952 depending on the age of the dare devil in the front.)”

Jay Aptt with Dave Sag – Rhumb Line Thursday

From Dave Sag

In continuation of our new meat series, we are proud to present Mr. Popin Jay Appt, erstwhile plumbing magnate and glitarist non parieil.Y’all know Jay from his machinations with the Mikey O. Band; breathing new life into the septum of Fishtown and wrecking your vestibular nerve in the process. We’re glad to have him; It’s his first time , so please be gentle.
Adding to the pyrexia will be L’il Steevie Chaggaris, on Skins and symbols, one of our stalwarts, as well as Greg T.,on catarrh and myselph, on base.I’ve just started a rumour that Mikey O. is gonna drop his apron and come on down for a bit, to show us how it’s done. If so ,I’m gonna wear my white shoes. Why not be the first on your block to rock yer socks with some blues in a box?

And, for those of you in the joint-replacement crowd, next Monday from 1 to 3 pm at the Rose Baker Senior Center, I’ll be exercising my rights with the Good Old Salty Jazz Band. This is a fun outfit…and I’m not the oldest member!….for a change. Anyway, there’s dancing and coffee and someone always brings cookies or something, so c’mon down. It’s just like an A.A. meeting without the guilt and speeches!

Bill Staines to perform at One World Coffee House on Jan. 30

Folk musician Bill Staines will perform Saturday, Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. at the One World Coffee House at the First Universalist Church, 59 Main St., Essex.

Donation is $15. For reservations, call 978-325-3252.

Singing mostly his own songs, Bill Staines has become one of the most popular and durable singers on the folk music scene today, performing nearly 200 concerts a year and driving over 65,000 miles annually. He weaves a blend of gentle wit and humor into his performances.

His music is a slice of Americana, reflecting with the same ease his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon, the on-the-road truckers, or the everyday workers that make up this land.

How to Buy a Digital Camera

Many people have asked how to choose a digital camera. This article should help.

From Digital Photography School

1. Determine what you need

A mistake I see some digital camera buyers making is that they get sucked into buying cameras that are beyond what they really need. Some questions to ask yourself before you go shopping:

  • What do you need the camera for?
  • What type of photography will you be doing? (portraits, landscapes, macro, sports)
  • What conditions will you be largely photographing in? (indoors, outdoors, low light, bright light)
  • Will you largely stay in auto mode or do you want to learn the art of photography?
  • What experience level do you have with cameras?
  • What type of features are you looking for? (long zoom, image stabilization, large LCD display etc)
  • How important is size and portability to you?
  • What is your budget?

Ask yourself these questions before you go to buy a camera and you’ll be in a much better position to make a decision when you see what’s on offer. You’ll probably find the sales person asks you this question anyway – so to have thought about it before hand will help them help you get the right digital camera.

Tonight at the Rhumb Line!

From Dave Sag

Live! At the Rhumb Line, this week only, something new and different: “modern” blues. Ha-Ha-Ha. Actually, I would like to introduce you-all to Mr. Evan Goudreau, young lion, glitarist, and big man on the hippocampus these days. He’s been around and plays all over the east coast, singin’ and playin’ his way to electronic stardom. He’s  all over the place on the web; czech him out!
Also joining us for the first time is Andrew Jones, on drummbs. First heard him playing with Mark Earley, so you know he’s gotta be good. Of course, Greg T. will be there with his hat and smokin’ catarrh, and myself, as well. Doo come.
