Drumroll please.  Garett Olson of Rocky Neck is practicing to be the next great BMX bike stuntster.  Watch out when he gets those training wheels off.  Just look at that great look on his face – a mixture of fear and ecstacy.  You never know what you’ll see on Rocky Neck.

Did You Know? (Islandia off Wonson’s Cove)

That the “Islandia” superyacht, designed in Holland by Tony Castro and Peter Sijm, has an overall length of 41.60 meters (136’) by 7.88 meters (just under 26’) in width, and was made using steel for the quickwork and aluminum for the upper works?  Her design prescribes the presence of a bulbous keel with a composite sailing boat that has made it possible to reduce the draft to only 3.5 meters. All the interiors are in mahogany wood, matched with beige color upholstery and furnishings. The large living room, at the center of the boat, extremely bright thanks to the numerous glass surfaces, offers a spacious area with TV and dining table able to accommodate 10 persons. Astern of this room are the three guest staterooms, each with its own bathroom, and the boat owner’s stateroom. This latter stateroom is a true suite, with two large twin beds and a smaller bed, a lounge with an L-shaped sofa, a desk and a wardrobe, and is provided with a bathroom with a separate shower compartment. At the bow of the living room there is a large on-board galley, almost professionally equipped, the crew dining area and their cabins, each with separate shower and bathroom. From this area the crew gains direct access to the deck, to the engine room and to the technical area where all the systems for the correct operation and maintenance of the boat are situated. This allows for a maximum level of privacy.  (Nautica)

Cool little boat to tool around in, wouldn’t you agree?

Did You Know? (Charlie McCarthy)

that Charlie McCarthy represented Good Morning Gloucester at Madfish Wharf on Rocky Neck?  Edgar Bergen was unavailable.  Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy made their debut on “Royal Gelatin Hour” in 1936 and were an instant success. Soon after they were given their own show for Chase & Sanborn.  Almost immediately, The Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy Show became one of the most popular programs.  Charlie looks a little worse for the wear, and he’s so old now he has to be pushed around in a pram.  You never know who you’ll see on Rocky Neck.

Did You Know? (Linnet)

That the Linnet is currently Red Listed in the UK?  The linnet is a small Old World finch that was common in the British Isles up until the 1970s, when changes in farming practices, and the use of herbicides to kill weeds, drastically reduced the Linnet’s food sources

The Linnet is about six inches long, has a rapid twittering song, and migrates in flocks across the British Isles sometimes going farther south in the winter. The male has a grey head with a crimson crown, and the female is plain brown. The English name, Linnet, comes from the Latin lin and linum, for linen, through the Middle French Linnette, because the bird feeds on flax seed. The scientific name, Carduelis cannabin, comes from the Latin carduelis—of the family of small finch-like birds, and cannabin—of the hemp seed—because the bird also feeds on hemp seeds.

The bird was a popular pet in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Tennyson mentions “the linnet born within the cage” in part 27 of the poem In Memoriam A.H.H, the same section that contains the famous lines “‘Tis better to have loved and lost / Than never to have loved at all.

An appropriate name for Greg Bover’s sailboat.  It is the same name his wife’s family always gave to their boats.

Mug Up July 31

We had a great Mug Up this Sunday.  Linda Colman, FOB from Ann Arbor, MI came by with Bill Heckencamp and Jane Gibbs from Newburyport.  Charity Ciaramitaro came bearing warm bagels and cream cheese, and showed us her first paintings and some of her photography (the first she had shown them to anyone – it is a great honor to be the first to see someone’s work, and it was wonderful – she has a great eye).  Schooner Adventure’s Peter Souza stopped by bearing a CD gift of sea songs by John Roberts.  The Boss was here as was Thom Falzarano, Ed Collard (who brought some glazed “walnuts” to taunt Paul “Paulie Walnuts” Frontiero with), Paul and Kathy Frontiero brought themselves and brownies with “walnuts”, R.D., Paul and Sue Morrison (who made some awesome zucchini bread from the monster zuccini in their garden – see R.D. pictured with it, the bread, not the monster zuccini), Ruth brought a cool fruit salad and Winslow came bearing blueberry muffins.  Greg Bover was back for a visit from his organ installation at Harvard and arrived in his sailboat.  I made my famous coffee and deviled eggs (in spite of the previous day’s egg explosion event).  Everyone had a great time and no one left hungry.

Did You Know? (More Watermelon Love)

That North Shore FOB and proponent of living by the heart, Rebecca Wuenschel, also found a heart in her watermelon?  Rebecca found her’s about two years ago, so it seems she may have been at the beginning stages of the watermelon love movement.  I’m wondering if this is just a North Shore, MA phenomenon, or if others around the country or the world are finding hearts in their watermelons or other fruits and vegetables.  I think this warrants further investigation.  Mankind is not heeding the warnings of severe weather, floods, earthquakes, famines, droughts, tsunamis, etc., so maybe Mother Nature is making one last attempt to communicate with us through our food.  Love.  That is the message.

Did You Know? (Exploding Eggs)

that if you are hardboiling eggs to make deviled eggs for Mug Up and you leave the kitchen to talk to customers and forget about them, when the water has boiled out, they will start exploding loudly and your pan will look like this afterwards?  I think it actually looks pretty cool myself, although I am not looking forward to cleaning it, and we will not be having deviled eggs at tomorrow’s Mug Up.  Sorry Linda Coleman, if you were looking forward to trying my deviled eggs when you come to Mug Up tomorrow – 10:00 am, 77 Rocky Neck.  I bet Sister Felicia would never do something like this!

Did You Know? (April Stanton Rocks Recycling)

some people say that young people today have no work ethic and are lazy?  Well I was blown away this morning when the Hiltz recycling truck pulled up and this cute, lean little slip of a girl named April Stanton bolted out to empty the recycling bins on Rocky Neck Ave.  She moves like lightning emptying the bins and does the route by herself, so is also driving that big honkin truck, maneuvering it like its a compact car.  Kudos to April and the amazing job she does.  Hiltz, you better appreciate what you’ve got there.

Did You Know? (Genie Gets Her Rock)

That Genie really wanted to find the Good Harbor Art Rock that Paul Frontiero hid this winter in the rocks by Good Harbor Beach; the one that Ed Collard found and then gave to me at the Rocky Neck Plunge, after I had commented that I finally knew where one was but the storm prevented me from getting out and finding it?  She and her two friends, Maureen and Paula were out playing tourist today, taking the water shuttle and poking around the galleries on Rocky Neck.  She is a devoted FOB, so wanted to come in and get a GMG sticker.  We got talking about Paul’s Art Rocks and how much we love them, and then realized we both had wanted to find the same rocks (Good Harbor Beach and the Paint Factory, which I did find under Fitz Henry’s crutch buried in the snow).  So Ed, I hope you don’t mind me regifting your gift, but I gave the Good Harbor Beach rock to Genie.  She grew up at Bass Rocks on Haskell at the corner of Mt. Pleasant and Mooreland, and really loves the rock because it is the view she grew up loving.  A lovely meeting and experience that made my day today on Madfish Wharf.

I thought I had posted this weeks ago, but can’t see that I actually did, so sorry Genie if you’ve been watching for it.

Did You Know? (Love in a Watermelon)

Some people find love on a two-way street, Jesus in a grilled cheese sandwich and Lucy in the sky with diamonds, but Madfish Wharf neighbor, Violet Gray, finds love in watermelons.  This is the first watermelon she cut into and found a clearly visible heart on the inside.   She has since bought two more watermelons and found the same thing, although multiples of hearts in those.  She bought the lovely watermelons at Stop & Shop, and would love to know if others have found hearts in their watermelons.  Violet is a really sweet woman who really loves watermelon, so I think the hearts were for her alone, but it would be interesting to know if other have had similar heartfelt watermelon experiences.  These particular watermelons were grown in the US and are from Gibson Farms.  If you’ve found a heart in your watermelon, we’d love to hear about it.

Did You Know? (Art Rock Found)

That Bud Hodge of Woodland Park, CO found the Paul Frontiero Rocky Neck Art Rock hidden in a Paul Morrison ceramic bowl at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery today?  Bud and his wife, Kathleen Burke, return each summer to Kathleen’s family home on Briar Neck.  Kathleen and her family love Joey and have been regular Capt. Joe & Sons lobster customers for many years; however, she didn’t know about GMG (what’s up with that Joey! – must be Frankie they always see), which she was thrilled to learn about.  I was explaining about Paul’s art rocks and how he hid them around Gloucester for people to find and that there was one actually hidden in the gallery.  Bud had already scoped it out and went for it immediately.
