I'm Marty Luster, a retired attorney and politician. In 2010 my wife, mother-in-law, dog and I relocated from Central NY to Gloucester. I hope my photographs and poetry(?) reflect my love for this place and her people.

Do Not Go Where The Path May Lead, . . . .
The Reward
Fred Bodin was rewarded today for his months of hard work recovering from his cancer related disability. For the first time since January, Fred was back at his gallery, Bodin Historic Photo on Main Street, Gloucester. After nibbling away at his accumulated work, Fred rewarded himself with something he could really sink his teeth into, Virgilio’s Eggplant Supreme. “I’ve been dreaming about this for months,” he said.
Fred said that he will be at the gallery on a limited hours basis until his strength and mobility are fully restored. For the time being, he hopes to be open for several hours every Saturday.

Kathy and Marty had a brief but pleasant visit with Peter Mullen, owner of the 165 foot midwater trawler-seiner Western Venture and the 109 foot Osprey.
The boats fish for herring and mackerel, often on Georges Bank, and market their catch locally and in Boston for bait and overseas (Mediterranean countries and Africa) for human consumption.

Kathy and Marty were back at the Gloucester Marine Railways this week to check out the Schooner Adventure with Restoration Coordinator Geoff Deckebach. Caulking and other repairs and improvements are underway as the restoration of Gloucester’s flagship continues.
Schooner Adventure fished for cod, haddock and halibut in Georges and Browns Banks from the year she was built, 1926, until 1953. Carrying a sailing rig, diesel engine, and 14 dories, Adventure was an exceptionally fast and able vessel, the ultimate evolution of the fishing schooner. She was a “highliner,” the biggest moneymaker of all time, landing nearly $4 million worth of cod and halibut during her fishing career. When retired in 1953, Schooner Adventure was the last American dory fishing trawler left in the Atlantic.
In 1954, Schooner Adventure was retired from fishing and converted into a windjammer for passenger cruising, removing the engine, propeller, and prop shaft. Adventure carried passengers along the coast of Maine until 1987. Her grace, beauty, and prowess as a sailing vessel earned her the nickname “Queen of the Windjammers.” National Historic Landmark (1988-present)
Captain Jim Sharp donated Adventure in 1988 to the people of Gloucester to be preserved as Gloucester’s historic tall ship and to be used to inform and educate the public about the important role of fishing in American history.

This week Kathy finishes up her series on the Felicia Oil family business located in Gloucester’s Fort. We see that they have diversified into the home oil business because of the declining fishing industry (John Nicastro’s interview from last week). http://youtu.be/SLqoQtNwmLc
Today John manages the dock and the In/Out board illustrates the past and present. His sons (Paul on the left and Sal on his right) run the home oil business. Paul describes their current situation in the video (last frame).
