Karen Pischke BSN, RN's avatarCape Ann Wellness

To stay ‘healthy and safe’ during this national/global health crisis, it is important to be aware of and follow the advice of local, state, national and international government and public health departments guidelines.

Depending on where you live in the world, those recommendations vary as well as can change daily. Sources to find up-to-date, accurate, evidence-based information include: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), World Health Organziation (WHO), and the United Nations (UN), as well as state and local Public Health Departments.

Take care of yourself and doing everything you can to stay healthy and boost your immunity:

  • Rigorous hand washing,
  • Keep a healthy environment,
  • Eat healthy balanced, nutritious meals,
  • Avoid drugs, smoking, excess drinking,
  • Spend time in nature,

Our Facilities Manager Jeremy, Bryan Nikola, Client & Housing Services Director Jen Beloff, &

Assistant Housing Director Erin George help set up the temporary YMCA space for our shelter guests

Meeting people’s needs with incredible support from our community

During this pandemic, we have been challenged to respond quickly to the changing needs of our clients and the community. Luckily, our community seems to recognize how important it is to protect EVERYONE, regardless of their housing status or income.

There have been hundreds of groups and individuals supporting both the Shelter and the Cape Ann Emergency Relief Fund, such as the Essex County Community Foundation (ECCF), who have provided emergency grant support to our Shelter operations, as well as the super-kind ‘We Are All In This Together Gloucester‘ FB community, who provided dinner for the staff and guests at the shelter one night. Cape Ann Savings Bank stepped up to support folks who have lost income related to COVID-19 by making a significant contribution to the Cape Ann Emergency Relief Fund, which will end up benefiting many people in our community.

We want to thank EVERYONE for supporting people when they need it the most.

Want to help? Get dinner delivered to the Shelter!

We’re looking for local organizations, businesses, or individuals to purchas a lunch or dinner for guests and staff at the shelter. Both lunch and dinner are needed on upcoming Saturdays & Sundays. They’ve had great luck ordering with Destino’s, George’s, Firing Up, Mike’s Place, & the Causeway Restaurant. If you’re interested in providing a meal, please email Erin at egeorge@actioninc.org

Melissa Abbott French Bread

Melissa writes:

I made French Baquettes today with a recipe I have been using since I first made this as a teenager many years ago. It’s n the old “joy of cooking”, not the new “joy of cooking”. My mother had a few cookbooks but the “go-to” was The Joy. It has everything in it, even how to cook squirrel etc. I wanted to know what real French bread tasted like, and I have never stopped using this recipe. When people bite into it they roll their eyes. I am not kidding! #frenchbread #baquette #joyofcooking

FISHERMAN’S WHARF CURBSIDE RETAIL OPERATION

Following Good Morning Gloucester’s Pat. D.’s advice, we called Fisherman’s Wharf new curbside retail fish operation yesterday, Saturday a.m.
As Pat D said, it was so simple.  The phone was answered promptly, our order of seafood and Minglewood’s clam chowder was taken, with immediate pickup possible.  I drove into Minglewood’s parking area and entrance off Rogers St.  A polite young masked man asked my name;  quickly a  young masked lady appeared with my order!  It couldn’t have been easier!
I could hardly wait to get home to inspect the contents of my bag.  The sea scallops were beautiful, uniform in size, big and plump.  Two pounds of skinless haddock was firm, “fresh as a daisy”, and the clam chowder was excellent, fast consumed at lunch time.
Lunch was being prepared; the meat loaf was in the oven, but within a few minutes out came our black iron skillet and the one-pound of plump sea scallops were searing in butter and seasoning.  I stood over the stove and constantly turned each scallop – careful not to overcook (we like our scallops medium rare!)   Bottom line, we had a feast of scallops, (golden brown) and delicious hot Minglewood clam chowder.   Today, we cooked scallops and haddock, our “seafood platter”.  Again, it was superb.    What a treat!
The Gloucester Fisherman’s Wharf curbside retail fish operation has answered the call in this coronavirus pandemic crisis.  It  is convenient and innovative.  Gloucester is fortunate to have these young entrepreneurs stepping up to the plate, offering the freshest succulent seafood at reasonable prices.  We recommend this new Gloucester dining experience.  Fisherman’s wharf curbside retail fish has answered the call!  Someone once said, “necessity is the mother of invention”.  The Giacaleone family, husbands and wives, have delivered!
