JOIN US FOR A COMPLIMENTARY WINE TASTING WITH CASEY GRUTTADAURIA OF IDEAL WINES
Ideal is an importer and distributor of fine wine and spirits based in Medford, Massachusetts. The companyโs roots go back to 1905, when Samuel Bender and two partners founded a retail wine and provisions store in Boston, which evolved in the years after WW II into one of the cityโs premiere fine wine shops. It was in the late 1970s that Larry Bender, the third generation of his family in the business, decided to strike out on his own, separating the importing business from his fatherโs retail operation. His goal was to import wines from small high-quality wineries directly to the Massachusetts market, wines that had previously only come through national importers, if they were imported at all. Most of the wines at that time were French, but the company soon expanded its Italian selections, and has since rounded out the book with some American wineries as well as wines from other countries.ย Ideal brings us wine with a strong sense of place, made with minimal intervention, at a great price. Casey is one of our favorite wine reps as he is engaging and very educated in these unique, boutique wines. Come out and enjoy them with him as your host!

La Crotta di Vegneron Mรผller Thurgau, Valle dโAoste, Italy
Varietal: Mรผller Thurgau Alc. 13%
The La Crotta di Vegneron Cooperative was set up in 1980 with 25 partners. Today it numbers 70 partners and produces 200,000 bottles. The cooperative collects the grapes coming from the Chambave Denomination of Origin. The partnersโ objective has always been to get the best quality out of their vines and their sloped terraces. La Crotta di Vegneron pursues the ancient tradition of the “campagnards”, whose strength lies in the relationship between autochthonous vines and terroir.
La Crotta di Vegneronโs wines and grappas emanate the spirit of the Aosta Valley mountains, thanks to ancient autochthonous vines (traditional vines cultivated with great skill and pride and which are respectful of the multifaceted terroir). Their cellar is in Chambave, a small hamlet in the Aosta Valley bordering on the west with France and north with Switzerland. The winegrowers who belong to the Cooperative often manage small plots located in a territory where the mechanization of the vineyard is not always possible, and therefore tend to have higher management costs.
Mรผller Thurgau is a vine obtained from the crossing of Riesling and Sylvaner which is well suited to cool climates. In Valle d’Aosta, it was introduced after 1946; the climate of the region, characterized by sudden changes in temperature especially during the maturation period, favors the formation of the elegant aromas that characterize this wine. This Mรผller Thurgau has a very fruity nose, with notes of melon, peach, and tropical fruit, along with aromatic herbs and white flowers. On the palate, it is fresh, dry, and full-bodied.
Serve as an aperitif. Pairs well with Italian vegetable soups, white meat, and fresh cheeses. $14.99
Maison des Ardoisieres Cuvรฉe Silice Blanc 2020, Savoie, France
Varietal: Jacquรจre Alc. 11%
Formed by a group of partners in the late 1990s, Domaine des Ardoisiรจres revitalized their vineyard land at the direction of organic and biodynamic vigneron Michel Grisard. Champagne native Brice Omont joined the team as lead winemaker in 2005 and, since then, their five different wines (three white and two red) have garnered critical acclaim not only within France but worldwide. With demand increasing but supply remaining the same, some of Omontโs wines fetch prices nearing triple digits, which makes โSiliceโ seem underpriced for the immense drinking pleasure it provides. In the glass, it is a vibrant lemon hue with flecks of silver. With a short 15-minute decant, beautiful aromas of green apple, honeydew, lemon zest, and fresh apricot unfurl from the glass alongside a touch of flinty smoke. On the palate, the wine has a balance of taut minerality and textured roundness, akin to top-notch Chablis. Being Jacquรจre though, it offers more floral notes with flavors of plum and winter melon. It will gain more texture and complexity in the next two to three years but is ready to drink now.
Pairs well with cheese fondue, vibrant salads, garlic-butter shrimp. $22.99
Chateau de la Liquiรฉre Faugรฉres, Languedoc-Roussillon, France
Varietals:Grenache, Syrah, Carignan Alc.14.5%
Nestled in the midst of the Haut Languedoc national park, the Faugรจres wine region is unique in that its soils are nothing but schist. La Liquiรจreโs vineyards are located in the highest parts of the appellation. They look out over the Mediterranean, offering a prime site for growing fine wines. Although the soils are all the same type, elevations range from 150 to 350 meters. The warmer soils in the lower part of the appellation area are conducive to growing Mourvรจdre, Carignan and Grenache. The cooler, higher sites are the perfect location for Syrah. The entire estate is farmed organically. The vineyards cover 55 hectares. There is little soil, and some vineyards are very steep, resulting in small yields. Faugรฉres is an intense wine, with red and black berry aromas and flavors and mineral notes, elegant tannins, and a long finish.
Pairs well with lamb, beef fillet, and game birds. $17.99
Domaine Durand Prรฉmices Cornas, Rhone, France
Varietals: Syrah Alc. 14.5%
Domaine Durand is a family-owned estate run by brothers Eric and Joel Durand since 1991. The estate comprises 13 hectares of Syrah vines, eight in Saint-Joseph and five in Cornas. Cornas is one of the most exciting wine regions in the world and is the only red-wine appellation in the northern Rhรดne that requires its wine to be 100% Syrah. Eric and Joรซl have painstakingly reconstructed their family’s ancient, terraced vineyards, and continue the back-breaking work of maintaining and rebuilding them every year to prevent erosion. They work their vineyards entirely by hand, coaxing the grapes to optimal ripeness before crafting exceptional wines of depth, precision and persistence. Their lush, rich style is the paradigm for the region, and one of the reasons Cornas is such a sought after and admired wine. The 2019 Cornas Prรฉmices offers all the intensity and power of a great Hermitage, but at a fraction of the price of its flashy neighbor. In the glass, the wine is a deep purple with blue fruit, violets, ground pepper, and charred meat-like aromas and flavors. Rich and full-bodied, it has loads of silky tannins. This Cornas will evolve with age. Best from 2023 through 2035.
Pairs well with roast leg of lamb, grilled beef, spiced red meat. $39.99
Vigneti VumbacaCirรณ, Calabria, Italy
Varietal: Gaglioppo Alc. 13.5%
The Vigneti Vumbaca company is based in Cirรฒ and extends over an area of about 13 hectares. Organically run, the enterprise is now led by Christian Vumbaca, who, after about fifteen years spent in Rome between university studies and work at a prestigious law firm, decided to return to his native land to follow the company created by mother Silvana and uncle Enzo. His red wine is made from Gaglioppo grapes, grown in tree-trained vineyards, on clay-limestone soil, located in the historic production area of Cirรฒ Classico. It pours a deep ruby red. The nose is complex, full of red fruit, undergrowth, dried flowers, dehydrated fruit, and citrus, Mediterranean scrub, and toasted and sweet spices. It is balanced on the palate, lively, fresh, and quite structured. It finishes on balsamic notes, minerals, cherry, and bitter orange.
Pairs well with aged cheeses, salami, courses with red meat sauces, roast lamb. $19 .99
Cantina del Pino Ovello 2015 Barbaresco,
Varietal: Nebbiolo Alc.: 14.5%
Barbaresco is a small village in Piedmont rising up out of the plain to sit in the Langhe hills. Here they produce a 100% Nebbiolo wine that takes its name from the village. Barbaresco is a wine of power and depth with an ability to age for multiple decades. Often thought of as the feminine version of Barolo, Barbaresco is a dramatically smaller region than its cousin. Barbaresco can only be produced within 1265 acres, and a maximum of 85,000 cases per year can be produced from the more than 500 growers. It is separated into four different communes of which three dominate, Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso. The Vacca family has been living and working the vines at Cantina del Pino, one of the oldest estates in Barbaresco, since the 1920s. Cantina del Pinoโs approach to winemaking is rooted in a deep appreciation for the land and gentle processes that allow the particularities of the soil to become tangible in the wines they are making. Deceptive in its light-bodied color, the 2015 Barbaresco Ovello packs a serious punch. Violet, star anise, woodland berry, and camphor aromas lead the way on this elegant, firm red. The savory, linear palate delivers juicy Marasca cherry, pomegranate, licorice and orange zest while taut, fine-grained tannins provide support. It’s focused and balanced, with fresh acidity. It is a structured wine that will develop gradually over the years.
Pairs well with roast meats, game birds, and powerful cheese. $57.99

It’s fun getting out in the community and seeing so many of our friends that are making a go of it in local shops. Retailers, cafes, galleries and restaurants really are the lifeblood of our city where people go to see each other and support one another.
I’ve been able to bring “my beautiful wife Kate” *Trademark out as she has so much fun and is a whole lot better to look at than my ugly mug in our videos.
I’d just like to take a little time here to plug her Real Estate services.
I see firsthand how hard she works as do many real estate professionals. I’ll tell you something else about her though- she is incredibly honest and diligent. She’s very very responsive. She puts her clients first and gets right back to them with answers to their questions, no matter what day it is.
I’m very proud of her.
If you think of it when looking to buy or sell a home please consider using her to represent you. She is fully invested in our community recently joining Rotary and filming our Good Morning Gloucester Shop Local series- she gives back every chance she gets.

Chief Eric Smith and the Gloucester Fire Department would like to provide community members with important fire prevention tips to remember when decorating this holiday season.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fire departments across the country responded to an average of 790 home structure fires per year that began with decorations, excluding Christmas trees, in 2015-2019. During that same period, fire departments also responded to an average of 160 home fires per year that were started by Christmas trees.
While it is fun to decorate homes for the holidays, the Gloucester Fire Department wishes to share the following holiday fire safety tips from the NFPA:
Christmas Tree Safety
According to the NFPA, nearly one in five Christmas tree fires were started by decorative lights. To prevent your tree from catching on fire, the Gloucester Fire Department offers the following tips:
Choose a tree with fresh, green needles. The needles should not fall off when touched.
Cut two inches off of the bottom of the trunk.
Place the tree a minimum of three feet away from any heat source, including fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents and lights.
Do not place the tree in an area where it may be blocking an exit.
Add water to the tree stand daily. A dry tree is dangerous because it can catch on fire easily.
Check whether your string lights are intended for indoor use and use lights that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory.
Check your holiday lights to make sure they are not worn and do not have broken cords or loose bulb connections. Review the manufacturerโs instructions for the number of light strands to connect.
Never decorate a tree with lit candles.
Always turn off the lights on your tree before going to bed or leaving home.
Dispose of your tree after Christmas or when it becomes dry. Dried-out trees are a fire hazard. Do not keep a tree that has become dried out in your home or garage or lean it up outside against your home.
Candle Safety
Candle fires peak in December and January with 11% of candle fires reported in each of these months according to the NFPA. During this time, Christmas is the peak day for candle fires with roughly 2.5 times the daily average. To ensure your candles do not start a fire, consider the following:
Keep children and pets away from lit candles. Consider using battery operated candles around children.
Place candles in a sturdy candle holder and on a surface that is also sturdy and uncluttered.
Place candles a minimum of one foot away from anything flammable.
When lighting a candle, take care to keep your hair and loose clothing away from the flame.
Do not burn a candle all the way down. Before it gets too close to the holder or container, put it out.
Never use candles if a member of your household uses oxygen.
Matches and lighters should be stored in a locked cabinet.
An adult should supervise any time candles are being used.
Do not pass handheld candles from one person to another.
Do not place lit candles in windows where a curtain or blind could catch fire.
Blow out candles before you leave a room or go to sleep.
Avoid using candles in areas where people may fall asleep, such as bedrooms.
Residents are reminded to test their smoke alarms monthly.
General Holiday Decoration Safety Tips
Community members should also be mindful of the decorations, such as figures or string lights, theyโre displaying around their homes this holiday season.
Seek out holiday decorations that are flame resistant.
Be careful about the placement of decorations and be sure to keep them away from lit candles and other heat sources.
When using string lights outside, make sure they are designed to be used outdoors. Some string lights are designed for indoor use only.
Hang lights using clips, not nails, so that the cords do not get damaged.
Do not place decorations in the way of windows and doors.
Before going to sleep or leaving your home, turn off all light strings and decorations.
For any other questions on holiday fire safety please visit NFPA.org or contact the Gloucester Fire Department at 978-325-5300.

An updated architectโs rendering, released last month, looks northwest from Mason Street at the new Sawyer Free Library. It depicts angled portions of corbeled brick, which echo the existing corbelling between the windows at each floor of the original building. โWith this newly added detail, weโre trying to reinterpret some of the elements of the Monell structure that people like, and this repetition of vertically grouped windows with a projected frame around them, along with the corbeled brick, makes for some interesting play of light and shadow.โ
Sawyer Free 2025 (visit sawyerfree2025.org), the philanthropic capital campaign to fund a comprehensive renovation, modernization and expansion of Cape Annโs oldest public library, is proud to announce the December 1 release of a new video featuring John and Mollie Byrnes in support of the campaign. As two of Gloucesterโs leading philanthropists who generously support charitable and nonprofit causes across Cape Ann and beyond, the Byrnesโ imprimatur comes at an ideal time for the Sawyer Library Foundation, which has one month remaining to meet a $100,000 challenge grant by a private family foundation.
Since the matching-gift challengeโs October 18 launch, Gloucester has come together to donate more than $58,000 of the $100,000 goal. The Byrnes video can be viewed on the sawyerfree2025.org landing page or on the campaignโs YouTube channel, Sawyer Library Foundation 2025.
โWe like to support organizations that put money where it really makes a difference in peopleโs lives and the (new) Sawyer Library will make a difference in peopleโs lives,โ said John Byrnes. โThe various programming the library provides and the fact that itโs a community gathering spaceโthatโs going to really help raise people up.โ
Sawyer Free Library provides a lifeline of resources serving people from all walks of life, but itโs beset by severe limitations of space, navigation, technology and mobility device access. While our colleagues at the Sawyer Free Library continue to provide the best possible services and programming for our entire community, Sawyer Free 2025 is committed to rallying all of Cape Ann to support the campaign to remake our beloved institution so the space will finally reflect the amazing things that happen within the building.
โThe library is a wonderful community asset โฆ and itโs time,โ said Mollie Byrnes. โBuildings donโt last forever. A lot of people donโt want to be โthe first,โ then as they get used to the idea some change is happening and it really is good and they see enough other people buying into the idea and supporting it financially, they come around. I want this library to be a good part of this community.โ
โ(The Byrnes) know what theyโre about in this world and they consistently give to things they care about,โ said Beth Graham, a member of the Sawyer Library Foundation Steering Committee, a retired development executive and a Unitarian minister. โWhen I think of the Byrnes and Sawyer Free Library, so much of what they care about is embedded in this institutionโs mission and in what we do every day as an organization.โ
The Sawyer Free 2025 campaign is a transformational investment in Gloucesterโs future. The time-restricted, dollar-for-dollar match offer by a fund that wishes to remain anonymous represents a canโt-miss opportunity. If Gloucester and the surrounding Cape Ann community can raise that sum by midnight on December 31, the new library project will receive a matching gift of $100,000.
The most advanced Western democracies have embraced the fact that modern libraries are a nexus of education, community, innovation, economic advancement, technology, wellness, civic engagement, assimilation, belonging, preventative care, climate justice, lifelong learning, research and free programming. Gloucester deserves to be part of this revolution.
The Sawyer Free 2025 projectโs total cost is $29 million, a sum that includes built-in inflation costs through the completion of the project in 2025. The Sawyer Library Foundation, the fundraising arm of the campaign, has already secured $15.25 million in pledged donations and grant awards, including $1 million in donations in the first 150 days following the public launch of the campaign this past May.
Volunteer! Reach out if you want to pitch in at the library or with the capital campaign, either in person or virtually. Help your neighbors, serve your community and share your expertise. No matter what kind of volunteer work you do for us, you are contributing in invaluable ways.
