Savour Saturday Wine tasting – Mexican Wines

THIS SATURDAY, July 23, 2 – 4 pm
COMPLIMENTARY
FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITH MAX MURPHY, OWNER TOZI IMPORTS

We at Savour are very excited to introduce you to some incredible wines from Mexico with the owner of the importing and distribution company, Tozi Imports. But first, a great story . . . Tozi was born out of love. First, sommelier Max Murphy fell in love with a woman from Mexico. When he visited Mexico with her, he fell in love with the wine. Max and Kenya married in Mexico, and Max chose Mexican wines to serve at the wedding. When Max’s family and friends clamored to buy the wedding wines back home, the idea for a wine importing business was born. Come meet Max and let him introduce you to some of his favorite wines.
— Kathleen
The first three wines come from the state of Querétaro in Central Mexico, 6,500 feet above sea level. This is the southernmost wine region in the Northern Hemisphere. The area is extremely hot, dry, and has a 40-degree diurnal shift. Central Mexican red wines tend to have a lower ABV (alcohol by volume) and higher acid than wines from Baja. This makes them wonderful food wines!
NV Viña Doña Dolores Brut Reserva
Varietals: 50% Macabeu, 50% Xarel-lo
Made using the traditional champagne method, this lively sparkling wine sits for 18 to 24 months on the lees, followed by 1 year in the riddling rack and 1 year of bottle aging. It has strong stone fruit and tropical fruit notes with a crisp, dry finish. $17.99 – great bargain for such a labor-intensive wine!
2019 Vivante Tinto
Varietal: Malbec
Fermented in stainless steel and immediately bottled, this wine has notes of bright red cherries, plums, and hibiscus. It is fruit forward and very barbeque friendly. Can be served slightly chilled. $14.99
2018 Viña Doña Dolores Cuatro Regiones Red Blend
Varietals: 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Tempranillo, 20% Merlot, 10% Syrah, 10% Malbec, 3% Marselan
Aged for 16 months in American and French Oak, this wine is meant to represent all of Central Mexico. The winemakers source grapes from the four wine-producing states (hence Cuatro Regiones) of Querétaro, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, and Zacatecas. This is a medium to full-bodied red blend with complex flavors of dark red and black fruits, leather, and tobacco. $17.99
These next three wines come from the Valle De Guadalupe in Baja. This is Mexico’s version of Napa Valley and is where 80% of all Mexican wine is produced. There are more than 150 wineries, and the valley sits 15 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean with low hills to the west and high hills to the east. It is classified as a Mediterranean climate and sits at a point where two tectonic plates meet — the soil is a mix of sand, clay, and granite.
2017 Vinos Lechuza Chardonnay
Varietal: Chardonnay
Fermented in stainless steel, this wine sits for 9 months on the lees. It also undergoes partial malolactic fermentation, resulting in a pleasant creamy texture, without the use of oak. The lees provide brioche notes along with honeydew melon, pineapple, and green apple. $34.99
2018 EmevéArmonia de Tintos Red Blend
Varietals: 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot, 25% Shiraz
This wine sees 12 months in new French oak. Full-bodied with notes of blackberries, blueberries, and plums, it also has a pleasing vanilla finish and is very crowd friendly. $29.99
2019 Monte Xanic Cabernet Sauvignon
Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon
Aged for 12 months in second use (more neutral) French oak barrels, this is a medium to full-bodied Cabernet with notes of plum, cassis, and baking spice with soft, velvety tannins. $29.99
Now, a word about beer . . .
While you’re in the store, take a look at some of the new beers we have for summer: a citrusy saison from Cambridge Brewing Company called Working Class Hero; an NEIPA from Riverwalk Brewing called Hit of Haze, and one of the best Belgian style white beers this side of Belgium, Allagash White — made with coriander and curaçao orange peel, it’s lovely on a hot summer day! Ann Cortissoz, our new beer expert, is now making our selections and can help you find exactly the right choice for the beach, a summer gathering on the deck, or a barbeque in the backyard. What a great way to celebrate this joyful season on glorious Cape Ann!

Good Morning Glooucester! Joey?!?
Carin Macnamara here… we communicated way back in like 2011 with the photos of the “Lannon in the Rainbow”. This is totally unrelated.
I’d like to share my captures of the Glossy Ibis or it may even be the White-faced Ibis as my photos show some white in the face area… and they are very difficult to tell apart especially during and slightly after breeding season as markings in plumage change.
These images were taken in Gloucester yesterday in the golden light of breaking dawn. Their rich orange- brownish breast plumage transitioned into and iridescence of blue and purple on the back and wings… kind of like the colors you find in an oil slick after a rain on a hot day. They were both beautiful and remarkably fast as they flocked and fed on tiny crabs. I have close up photos of the crabs in their bills too so let me know if you are interested in them.
Shot with Nikon Z9, 800mm 6.3.
You have my permission(s) to share and please feel free to post on your social media with credits:

Enjoy!

Culture Splash is back for 2022, building off the success of last summer’s inaugural program.

Culture Splash is back for 2022, building off the success of last summer’s inaugural program. Gloucester is the only city in Massachusetts to have two designated cultural districts. This summer our cultural districts join forces to celebrate and promote our vibrant cultural organizations, creative groups and individuals, galleries, artists and non-profits. Join Rocky Neck Cultural District and Harbortown Cultural District in celebrating the very best of what Gloucester has to offer.
Every Thursday evening from June 23 to August 25, a different cultural organization will be spotlighted on Rocky Neck and in Harbortown. These signature cultural hosts will welcome visitors and residents from 4:00 to 7:00pm, highlighting their cultural work and programs in an Open House format, free to the public. Additionally, each host will bring together the offerings from the local creative community with performances, openings, and presentations. So that you can see ALL that each night has to offer, we are hosting free Harbor Shuttle access from 4:00 to 8:00pm between Harbor Loop and Rocky Neck. Shuttle will be leaving every half hour from the Harbormaster dock and the docks by the Studio.
Gloucester has a robust cultural community beyond compare. With so much to experience, we encourage you to join us. Music, art, culture, heritage, galleries, dance, and maritime history awaits. Make this the summer you get out and experience it all. Check back for weekly event activities and business happenings.
Culture Splash is brought to you by Rocky Neck Cultural District and Downtown Cultural District, made possible by a grant from the Mass Cultural Council.
