Gloucester Fire Department Offers Grilling and Outdoor Cooking Safety Tips

Chief Eric Smith would like to remind Gloucester residents to practice safe grilling habits while cooking outdoors this season.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, 57% of home grill fires occur from May to August, with July being the peak month. A leading cause of these grill fires is mechanical failures or malfunctions, such as leaks or breaks of containers or pipes.
To prevent fires from occurring, the Gloucester Fire Department would like to share the following safety tips provided by the U.S. Fire Administration and National Fire Protection Association:
  • Never leave your grill unattended while cooking.
  • Patios, terraces, screened-in porches and courtyards are leading home locations for grill fires. Grills should always be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • At the very least, grills should be kept at least three feet from siding, deck rails and eaves.
  • Have a 3-foot safe zone around grills and campfires. Keep kids and pets away from the area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. This will help prevent grease fires.
  • Check the fire danger rating in your area to determine if weather, or other factors, make it dangerous to light a fire.
  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.

Charcoal Grills

  • If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.
  • Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
  • There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.
  • When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing of them in a metal container.

Propane Grills

  • Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. To check for a leak, apply a light soap and water solution to the hose. If there’s a propane leak the bubbles will be released.
  • If your grill has a gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off both the gas tank and the grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department.
  • If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department.
  • If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least five minutes before re-lighting it.
If you have any additional questions on fire safety or prevention, contact the Gloucester Fire Department at 978-325-5300.
As always, if you have an emergency, call 911.

GLOUCESTER CULTURE SPLASH Gallery Strolls and Live Poetry on July 28

Culture Splash is a summer series of weekly Thursday events focused on connecting Gloucester’s two designated cultural districts: Harbortown and Rocky Neck. Gloucester is the only city in Massachusetts with two official cultural districts! Culture Splash is now in its second successful year, running on Thursdays through June, July, and August from 4:00-7:00pm, with a FREE Water Shuttle with Cape Ann Harbor Tours offered from 4:00-8:00pm, so “Splashers” can travel easily between events in both districts. The shuttle picks up and drops off at the docks at the Harbormaster building at Harbor Loop and at The Studio Restaurant on Rocky Neck.

Over 40 cultural organizations and small businesses are collaborating on this series, celebrating Gloucester’s robust cultural history and offerings. This collaboration is led by arts and culture industry leaders in Gloucester and made possible by City support, as well as grant funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. A couple of the most dedicated volunteer contributors are Courtney Richardson, Executive Director of Rocky Neck Art Colony, and Michael DeKoster, Executive Director of Maritime Gloucester.  Thursday, July 28 will bring about a special Culture Splash experience in Harbortown: a gallery stroll!

“Culture Splash is the best way to see all that Harbortown Cultural District has to offer, and that includes some of our world-class art galleries. What a great way to spend a Thursday evening! With this stroll you can move from gallery to gallery at your pace, enjoy local stores, grab a drink or dinner, stop in at local museums, and then take the free Harbor Shuttle to Rocky Neck and continue the fun. What a wonderful way to enjoy our city’s cultural scene,” says Michael DeKoster, Executive Director of Maritime Gloucester.

The Harbortown Gallery Stroll will feature fine arts experiences, hand crafted works, and displays at Beth Williams Studio, Cape Ann Museum, Charles Fine Arts, Chloe Leigh Designs, Jane Deering Gallery, Local Colors, and Matthew Swift Gallery. Refreshments will be offered to visitors.

Jane Deering Gallery, Harbortown

On Rocky Neck, a hub of art galleries and one of the state’s first designated cultural districts, stroll to Cove Gallery, the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, Imagine Gallery, Judythe Evans Meagher Gallery, Madfish Gallery, Michalak Fine Arts, Stephen LaPierre Gallery, and Hughes Bosca/Side Street Gallery! Rocky Neck’s featured cultural organization for July 28 is Gloucester Writers Center who will host a scenic Introduction to Haiku Workshop at 3:00pm and live poetry readings with Amanda Cook and D. Eric Parkison at Gloucester Writers Center at 126 East Main Street starting at 7:00pm. For more information on the Haiku Workshop, interested parties should register by email to adam@gloucesterwriters.org

“I love that Culture Splash brings new audiences to visit artists that have been living and working here for years! Rocky Neck has been home to working artists and their galleries for more than a century and this event honors that cultural history, giving Gloucester’s artists more visibility. Culture Splash is truly a collaborative effort between our two cultural districts, and it’s beautiful to see that partnership bringing arts and culture to the community,” says Courtney Richardson, Rocky Neck Art Colony Executive Director.

Beyond strolling galleries, you can find art displays at the Beauport Hotel in Harbortown and at Ocean Alliance on Rocky Neck, in addition to an abundant lineup of other cultural events including live music, performances, poetry readings, art demonstrations, and specials at restaurants and boutiques!

Visit discovergloucester.com/culture-splash to learn more, and access the event map, updated weekly with Culture Splash happenings.

This event series is made possible by grant funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Free Outdoor Screening of Gloucester-made, Oscar-winning film “CODA” Q&A with Director Sian Heder: Friday, Aug. 5

Any Cape Ann’er who has yet to catch up with CODA, this year’s Oscar winner for Best Picture, now has one less excuse. The Cape Ann Museum will present the film free to the public Friday, August 5 on a 26-foot screen in the spacious outdoors at the Cape Ann Museum Green.

“The Cape Ann Museum is thrilled to be hosting a free screening of CODA to celebrate the movie’s incredible artistic achievements and the local art and history that inspired it,” says CAM Director Oliver Barker. “We welcome this opportunity to invite our community to see the movie for free in the city where it was filmed.”

Following the success of last year’s public screening of Gloucester-based film, Captains Courageous (1937), the Cape Ann Museum is again partnering with the Rockport-based Cape Ann Community Cinema to “take art outside” with a free screening of the Oscar-winning 2022 movie at the Cape Ann Museum Green (13 Poplar St., Gloucester, MA).

CODA, which stands for “child of deaf adults,” tells the story of Ruby Rossi (Emilia Jones) and her family’s struggling fishing business. Her parents Frank (Troy Katsur) and Jackie (Oscar-winning star of Children Of A Lesser God, Marlee Matlin) and brother Leo (Daniel Durant) are deaf, with Ruby the only hearing person in her home. Ruby discovers a passion for singing that makes her choose between supporting her family and following her dreams.

Partially filmed in Gloucester, Rockport and Beverly, this screening is presented in conjunction with CAM’s summer exhibition, The Legacy of the Family-Owned Fishing Vessel, on view through September 18.

“We’re especially honored to have Sian Heder join us to speak about the process behind the film and her connections to Gloucester,” says Barker. Heder, a regular summer resident of Gloucester, will speak from 7:30pm-8:00 pm, with the film starting at 8:15 p.m. and wrapping up by 10:00 p.m. Attendees are invited to be on-site as early as 6:00 p.m. to reserve their spots and bring their own picnic to enjoy before the screening. There will be ASL translation during the announcements and conversation.

All parking will be at O’Maley Middle School with a shuttle between sites. On-site parking is reserved for those with accessibility requirements. Local residents are encouraged, where possible, to walk or ride their bike. While the screening is free to attend, reservations are required. Visit www.capeannmuseum.org/events for more details.
