It is going to be a beautiful, sunny day at Stage Fort Park to enjoy brews and ciders from your favorite local breweries. There will be LIVE music from Over the Bridge, providing a reggae-rock-hip-hop soundtrack (a great background for the lawn games)! We’re supporting a good cause…proceeds from the event will benefit local non-profits and help fund next year’s event. We will see you there!

Music of course is the Star of this Festival, but eating and drinking are importanttoo. Be prepared to have lunch or snack all day on Donny’s infamous value-pricedLanesvillain dogs & burgers or MB’s  “Cool” chili. There’s a Lobster Roll Truck withchowder along with  other vendors serving savory & sweet delights from Crepes to Tarts to Richardson’s Ice Cream. And, while adults washit all down with beer or wine from the cash bar,kids can listen to stories at the Virginia Lee Burton Writing Cottage or enjoy other activities just for them.

Join the Cape Ann Museum for a closing gathering of the Legacy of the Family-Owned Fishing Vessel. This exhibition has been created with materials related to family-owned fishing vessels provided to the Museum by the community. During the gathering, Historian Justin Demetri of Maritime Gloucester will share a few remarks about the importance of the family-owned fishing vessel in the context of Gloucester’s maritime history.

In addition to the exhibition on the third floor, a display of archival material and paintings pertaining to the fishing industry of the mid-to-late-century as well as hundreds of photographs of the fleet by Peter Prybot and Leonard Parker will be out for viewing in the CAM Library & Archives. In the CAM Auditorium, over twenty oral histories collected during the exhibit will be on loop for visitors to enjoy. For those inspired to add to the oral histories, the Museum encourages visitors to participate in the story-collecting kiosk set up in the gallery and at home from their own computer or cellphone via this link. Stories collected will be preserved in the Museum’s archives for future generations. A few of these stories can already be viewed on our Vimeo page.

We hope you’ll join us on Saturday, September 17 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm for a chance to hear these stories, appreciate the artwork, and explore the important legacy of the family-owned commercial fishing vessel.

Famille Perrin Reserve Côtes du Rhône Blanc, France

Varietals: Grenache blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, ViognierAlc.11.5%

Famille Perrin is a leading organic wine producer in the southern Rhone Valley, where they have been making wine for five generations. They are committed to manual methods and to the belief that organic viticulture is the only way to express the true essence of the terroir. This Côtes du Rhône Blanc pours a pale yellow with hints of delicate green. It has strong floral and mineral aromas on the nose leading to lemon, bergamot, and hawthorn on the palate and ending with a long finish.

Pairs well with Mediterranean food, grilled fish, bouillabaisse. $14.99

Hedges CMS Chardonnay, Yakima Valley, Washington

Varietal: ChardonnayAlc.12%

In 1989, Tom and Anne-Marie Hedges bought 50 acres on Red Mountain in the Yakima Valley and planted 40 acres of Bordeaux grape varieties, and over the years, wine production has become a family affair: their daughter, Sarah Hedges-Goedhart, is the head winemaker and their son, Christopher Hedges, is the general manager. In 2008 they converted to biodynamic farming, and in 2015 they released the first biodynamic Cabernet Sauvignon in Washington. The CMS Chardonnay pours a light golden color. On the nose, there is a hint of blood orange and tart caramel apple, mixed with cinnamon and buttered toast. There is a fresh mineral component to this wine. A tart beginning leads into a full and creamy mid-palate. There is a bit of butter, some fresh citrus and apple flavors, and a touch of spice on the finish with just a hint of that blood orange.

Pairs well with shellfish, lobster, and risotto. $14.99

Colene Clemens Dopp Creek Pinot Noir 2020, Newberg, Oregon

Varietals: Pinot NoirAlc.14%

Colene Clemens was founded in 2005 by Joe and Victoria Stark

with the purpose of making exceptional pinot noir, and they

named the property in honor of Victoria’s mother. Wine production began in 2008. Spanning 122 acres where the Chehalem Mountains converge with Ribbon Ridge, the estate contains both sedimentary soils

and volcanic soils. Elevation climbs from 350 to 650 feet, where the winery perches with sweeping views of the coast range and valley; 62 acres are planted to pinot noir and chardonnay. The vineyard is

completely dry farmed, and sustainable and organic processes are used whenever possible. The 2020 Dopp Creek opens with delicate aromas of rich purple fruit and thyme flowers. This approachable pinot noir has a juicy and round palate brimming with sweet cranberry and cherry, intermingled with wisps of cardamom and savory herbs. It is well balanced and a delight to sip. This wine is best consumed within the next three to four years.

Pairs well with salmon, roast chicken, pasta dishes $32.99

San Polo 2016 Brunello di Montalcino, Italy

Varietal: Sangiovese Alc. 14%

Brunello is a red wine of great power and elegance, the ultimate expression of Sangiovese. In Montalcino it is characterized by its reddish-brown color and intense aromas and flavors. San Polo, the Allegrini estate in Montalcino, makes their Brunello guided by respect for the land and sustainability. This Brunello pours an intense ruby red color with garnet reflections. The nose expresses the typical aromas of violet and small red fruits. There are hints of underbrush, aromatic wood, vanilla, and jam, followed by subtle notes of intense and persistent coffee. It is a warm wine in the mouth, with a dense and full-bodied texture. The finish is long, with well-defined tannins. Brunello di San Polo withstands long aging and improves with time in the bottle with earthy, savory aromas emerging, along with flavors of black currant and raspberry and notes of earth, iron and juniper. Best from 2025 through 2045.

Pairs well with rich risottos, roast lamb, steak with mushroom sauce. $64.99

Château Les Trois Croix 2016 Bordeaux, Fronsac, France

Varietals: Merlot, Cabernet Franc Alc.14.5%

Chateau Les Trois Croix dates back to at least 1712 when the large stone tower was carved and inscribed Trois Croix, which is translated to three crosses. However, we started paying attention to the property after Patrick Leon purchased the vineyard in 1995. Prior to taking over Les Trois Croix in 1995, Patrick Leon was the winemaker for Chateau Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac. Sadly, Patrick Leon passed away in 2018. Today, the property is managed by his son, Bertrand Leon. The 20-hectare Right Bank vineyard of Chateau Les Trois Croix is planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The terroir is limestone and clay soils. The vineyard is well placed at the peak of the Fronsac appellation with an elevation of 87 meters at its high point. This wine pours

a deep brilliant red color. The fruity nose has hints of black currant and blackberry. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with bright, precise black fruit and savory layers, framed by grainy tannins and finishing with a refreshing lift.

Pairs well with barbecued chicken, pork, duck, $34.99

Famille Brunier Le Pigeoulet 2019, Rhône France

Varietals: 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Carignan, 5% Cinsault Alc. 14%

Brothers Frédéric and Daniel are the fourth generation of their family to farm the land of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. They have worked hard to solidify the legacy left by their father, Henri, and their great-grandfather, Hippolyte. Their Pigeoulet is exuberant and approachable. At table, it is versatile and generous, with abundant aromas of blackberries, herbs, and licorice that can complement a wide range of foods. The structure is sturdy with density and freshness, herbs, licorice and blackberries. Oak tannins show through, since 50% of the wine is aged in oak foudres for 18 months.  

Pairs well with braised beef, pork, and cassoulet. $21.99

Library to Launch Young Gloucester Scientist’s Club for Elementary and Middle School Students

It’s full STEM ahead forSawyer Free Library‘s young patrons with the launch ofYoung Gloucester Scientist’s Club,anew innovative after-school program made possible through a federalLibrary Services and Technology Act(LSTA) grant from theMassachusetts Board of Library Commissioners(MBLC).

The grant of $9,800 will expand Gloucester’s public library’s programming to promote interest in science, engineering, technology, and math (STEM) learning. TheYoung Gloucester Scientist’s Clubsupports the digital, scientific and technological goals of 4th through 8th graders aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards. It will introduce young scientists to Gloucester community members with careers across a variety of STEM fields and connect them with Gloucester’s natural environment.

The Massachusetts Commercial Lobster Fishery “The Right Way”

Over the last 30 years, the Massachusetts Lobster industry has been at the  

forefront on right whale conservation measures while working vigorously to  

further protect the species. The 30 years of conservation measures have come at the  expense of the commercial lobstermen and yet, they are still at the table looking for  more ways to reduce risk.  

Recently, the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s (MBA) Seafood Watch program added the American Lobster to  its “Red List” of seafoods to avoid. This recent listing is neither warranted nor supported by the data  here in Massachusetts. Massachusetts commercial lobstermen are mandated to a 100% reporting  threshold and the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries has 30 plus years of data necessary to  debunk why Massachusetts lobster should not be on this “Red List”.  

Massachusetts commercial lobstermen are 30 years ahead of the rest of the region when it comes to  reducing risk to the right whales. Currently, Massachusetts commercial lobstermen have reduced risk  by 92% to the right whales and this listing is misleading to the general public and should be  retracted immediately.  

Massachusetts is doing more than any other state or region  

for the protection of right whales all the while maintaining  

a sustainable resource and profitable commercial lobster  

fishery. The Massachusetts American Lobster should be  

listed on the “Green List” of seafoods to buy.  

There have been ZERO Right Whale deaths attributed  

to Massachusetts Lobster gear and the MBA’s conclusion snubs all of the right whale conservation  efforts that Massachusetts commercial lobstermen have implemented such as:  

1935- International ban on hunting whales goes into effect  

1970- North Atlantic Right Whales listed as endangered  

1996- NOAA implements the Large Whale Take  

Reduction Plan  

1997-MA requirement for “breakaway” features in  

gillnets and trap/pot buoy lines Seasonal ban in Cape  

Cod Bay for gillnets and on use of floating rope between  

traps, dedicated aerial surveys begin in Cape Cod Bay  

2004 – First in Nation for year-round ban on floating  

rope between traps in Cape Cod Bay (9,000 miles  

removed)  

2007 – First in Nation for year-round ban on use of  

floating rope between traps statewide  

2014- First in Nation- MA Restricted Area is created –  

3-month closure Feb-April to 3,071 sq. miles 2015 – 3  

month (Feb/Apr) closure to all pots/traps in the MA  

Restricted Area  

2016 – 3 months (Feb/Apr) closure to all pots/traps in the  

MA Restricted Area  

2017 – 3 month (Feb/Apr) closure to all pots/traps in the  

MA Restricted Area PLUS 4-day extension of the gear closure in Cape Cod Bay  2018 – 3 month (Feb/Apr) closure to all pots/traps in the MA Restricted Area PLUS a 15-day  extension of the gear closure and speed restriction (10 mph) for small vessels in Cape Cod Bay 

2019- 3 month (Feb/Apr) closure to all pots/traps in the MA Restricted Area  

2020 – 3 month (Feb/Apr) closure to all pots/traps in the MA Restricted Area  

2021 – 3 (Feb/Apr) closure to all pots/traps in the MA Restricted Area PLUS a 15-day extension of  the gear closure and speed restriction (10 mph) for small vessels in Cape Cod Bay  2022 – Southern N.E. closed 5,648 sq. miles est. right whale population 350. Making the total sq.  miles 11,722 closed to lobstering.  

Over the last 5 years, the Massachusetts Lobster  

Foundation in collaboration with the Massachusetts  

Lobstermen’s Association and Ketcham Trap developed  

weaker red and candy cane rope breaking at 1,700 lbs.,  

with a MASS LOBSTER tracer ribbon.  

The commercial lobstermen in Massachusetts have been  

fishing this weakened rope for 4 years now without many  

issues. We are working with Ketcham Trap on every  

iteration to make it a little better but still weak to keep the  

fishermen fishing.
