Quick Work by Gloucester Fire Department Prevents Spread of Apartment Building Fire

Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department quickly extinguished a fire overnight in an apartment building.
At 1 a.m. Thursday, crews received a report of a fire at 59 Prospect St., at the intersection with Mason Street. The first arriving company found fire on the staircase and landing that connects 59 Prospect St. with a building at 25 Mason St.
The fire was knocked down within minutes of firefightersโ arrival.
โIf not for the quick response and knockdown of this fire, the damage and loss would have been far more significant,โ Chief Smith said.
Five people were displaced until repairs are made to the building.
After an investigation, it was found that cause of the fire was careless disposal of smoking materials. The Gloucester Fire Department reminds residents to properly dispose of smoking materials, whether inside or outside.
Station coverage was provided by Beauport Ambulance and the Rockport Fire Department.
Help us launch the race boats this Saturday May 13th.

The IDRC will be launching the race boats this Saturday May 13th @ 9AM. Meet us at 28 Gee Ave in Gloucester to help load the boats on trailers and transport to the landing at the high school. 3 boats to launch and 2 boats to pull. Should only take an hour or so, and we will be ready for the season. We will need one more trailer and a few hands to make light work of moving the dories. Let us know if you can make it, or if you have a truck/trailer available that morning.
The board will also hold a meeting next week on Tuesday evening, May 16th @ 7pm at the dory shop, Harbor Loop, Gloucester. If you’d like to help out with our upcoming events, feel free to stop by and contribute. The more you put in the more you can get out of your membership.
See you this Saturday!!

Varietal: Arneis, Alc. 13.5%
Founded in 1467, Tenuta Carretta is one of the oldest and most historic wineries in the area. The estate consists of the winery, two high-end restaurants (one at the winery and the other in Barolo on the Cannubi hill), the Charme Hotel, and a Wine ShopAll the vineyards of Tenuta Carretta are part of the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato winemaking district, an extraordinary territory named a UNESO World Heritage Site in 2014, and which today extends to about 70 hectares. 35 hectares makeup a single plot that extends south to northwest as an amphitheater around the winery, but the propertyโs vineyards also extend close to the Langhe. In the vineyard, Tenuta Carretta Philosophy is based on sustainability (environmental, technical, and economical). They use integrated viticulture techniques that allow for a limited amount of chemical treatments only when they are indispensable to protect development of the plant. Arneis is a grape that has been neglected in Piedmont, but some producers, such as Tenuta Carretta, have seen its potential. This Arneis has aromas of peach and melon and flavors melon, apple, and tangerine, plus some white flowers, with peaches and cream and butter poached pear. This is ripe and oily in texture, with mouth-coating viscosity and a concentrated finish. Pairs well with creamy pasta, fish, chicken. $ 34.99
Adega Ponte de Lima Vinho Verde Rose, Minho, Portugal
Varietals: 90% Vinhao, 5% Padeiro,5% Espadeiro, Alc.11%
In the far north of Portugal, the Minho district is famed for its Vinho Verdes, “green wines” produced from grapes that are just freshly ripe. These lightly ripened grapes give bright, fresh wines, often with a hint of carbonation, designed to be drunk very fresh and young. While most Vinho Verde is white, there are red and rosรฉ Vinho Verdes produced as well. Ponte de Lima Vinho Verde Rose is produced by the Adega, a cooperative of almost 2,000 very small growers in the surrounding vineyard lands founded in 1959. The Rosรฉ is salmon in color and slightly spritzy. Red fruits on the nose are followed by delicate flavors of red and wild berries on the palate, balanced with a refreshing acidity.Pairs well with appetizers, fish, seafood. $ 9.99
Lauverjat Moulin des Vrilleres Sancerre Rose 2021, Loire, France
Varietal: Pinot Noir, Alc. 12.5%
The Lauverjat family has been growing grapes in Sancerre for generations in the tiny village of Sury-en-Vaux. Husband-and-wife team Christian and Karine have 12-hectares of vines in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume. They have made improvements over the years, including a transition to sustainable viticulture. They favor working the soil and use a seaweed to combat disease, reducing chemical intervention. They grow grass in the rows to prevent erosion. Several years ago, they invested in a new clay filtration system that allows them to very gently filter the wines without stripping them of their character. The wines from Lauverjat represent some of the best values to be had from the appellation. The 2021 Sancerre Rosรฉ is fermented and aged in stainless steel. It pours a beautiful salmon color and has enticing aromas of wild strawberries with the classic mineral backbone that typifies the wines of Sancerre. Serves as an aperitif. Pairs well with salads, chicken, and spicy food. $29.99
St. Jacques DโAlbas Le Petit Saint Jacques
Varietals:55% Grenache, 35% Syrah, 10% Carignane, Alc.15%

This wineryโs 26 hectares of organic vines are just a portion of their total 60 hectares of forest and garrigue โ teeming with wildlife โ complete with an 11th century chapel. At the winery, a small team led by owner Graham Nutter, craft superb reds, whites and rosรฉs, all of which are farmed organically. Their secondary wine is Le Petit Saint Jacques, but donโt be fooled, there is nothing small about Le Petit Saint Jacques! An exciting Coteaux de Peyriac (IGP) blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Carignane, vinified and aged in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve purity of fruit. Le Petit Saint Jacques pours a deep ruby red. Violets and black fruits on the nose with light touches of spice lead to an intense, full-bodied and fleshy palate with fine tannins well integrated. Bluefin Blowout Update From Warren

To say this year’s event could be described as epic โฆ.well that’s a good thing. We just completed our first Bluefin Blowout related event called the 5K. A combination of runners and walkers enjoyed Becca Pizzi’s course from Stage Fort Park to Hammond Castle and back. The enthusiasm for what the Bluefin Blowout has become and what it means to Gloucester and Cape Ann is astonishing. There will be more boats, captains and crews then ever before! So book your hotel rooms, make it a point to take some time off work and enjoy Gloucester’s biggest fundraiser and tournament all to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.
Now this year, we are back to a more normalized schedule, but still fishing weekdays. We kick off the event on Monday night with the, now, ever so popular Bluefin Bash. Music, great food, open bar, no tuxedo rule, and a spectacular auction both live and silent. This year the table prices for 10 guests have been reduced to $5000 per table or $500 per seat. Due to the size of the tent needed to accomodate the Bash guests we need to sell these tables ASAP. As many can attest, this is the summer party you want to be at. So visit the Bluefin Blowout web site and join the party. warren
