Paul Jermain Complete’s 100th “Smart Boating” Show At CATV

As you may or may not know, I started producing a show in 2006 called Smart Boating. The show which airs weekly on CATV, and 30 other local public access cable TV stations around the country, is designed to help boaters make “smarter” decisions so that they can more fully enjoy their time on the water.

Just the other night I completed the 100th show. Quite a milestone, as over the years, I’ve invested 1,800-2,000 hours in the series which many people here locally and across the U. S. have viewed with interest.

I wanted to share the news for a few reasons.

1) It’s really quite a feat to do achieve this volunteer effort, while holding down a “day job”

2) The show is really helpful to many local boaters, both inexperienced and experienced, and could be to even more of them, if they were aware of it

3) CATV, our local public access cable TV station, is still a pretty well kept secret and it would be good to continue to educate the public on what the local station does and how it supports them

Thanks. Paul Jermain

Smart Boating TV show producer, Paul Jermain, announced the release of the 100th program of the popular Smart Boating local public cable access TV show series today.

The informative weekly TV show, developed to help boaters make more informed, “smarter” decisions about boating topics, first aired in August 2006. Since then, a broad variety of areas have been covered including: boat purchases-new and used; components-propellers, electrical systems and upholstery; boat types- USCG, electric, PT and wooden; boat maintenance-commissioning and winterizing; and safety-weather, life rafts and man overboard procedures, among others.

“The show started from humble beginnings,” according to Jermain, “The idea came from a lunchtime conversation with a marine surveyor friend who stated that he thought I could produce a better show than a well-known syndicated boating show that was airing at the time. I was unfamiliar with how to produce a TV show, but felt that my instructional background developed through my Entrepreneurial Training Program work would enable me to produce a quality program. So, I stopped into the local public access cable TV studio the next day and asked for training. Three weeks later, the first show “How To Protect Your Boat In Event of A Hurricane” was produced.”

Shows are primarily shot in the field with expert guests who provide solid advice on top of carefully researched, thorough, show discussion guides. And the entire process, from topic selection to editing, which typically takes about fifteen hours, is done strictly on a volunteer basis.

Donna Gacek, Cape Ann TV Executive Director stated, “We are proud to have supported Paul in the achievement of this significant milestone. Our mission is to serve as an important community resource that gives everyone a voice. The Smart Boating program is a fine example of programming made by the community, for the community. We welcome volunteers at all levels and endeavor to work closely with them to reach their personal goals.”

The Smart Boating TV show airs weekly on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 on Tuesday evenings at 8:00 p.m., Friday afternoons at 2:00 p.m., and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 p.m., and on thirty other local public access cable TV station channels on the North Shore, and across the U.S.

Paul Jermain, a Manchester resident, leads an Entrepreneurial Training Program for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with Northern Essex Community College, and is a member of the Cape Ann TV board of directors.

Do Fiesta Old School With The Semanse Seeds and Gallia

When we were kids our entire family- Grandparents right down to Grandchildren would sit in the chairs down at the Fiesta and listen to the Italian music.  Even though we were only 7 years old our parents would send us to the nut vendor who had all the different kinds of cashews and semanse and gallia.

I’m not sure what year the nut vendor went away, but you can still get the semanse seeds at Virgilio’s and celebrate Fiesta Old School like we did in the 70’s.

Sista Felicia got some today.

$1.50 a bag.  how can you go wrong? Tradition- Fiesta- that’s What I’m Talkin About!

Savour Wine and Cheese Opens its Doors to the Cape Ann Community June 30th

Savour Wine and Cheese announced today that they will open their doors at 24 Washington Street in Gloucester, Massachusetts on June 30, at 10A.M., just in time for the Fourth of July weekend. The company’s highly-trained staff helps the customer navigate through a sea of wine and cheese options, insuring the “perfect fit” for everyone.

Savour has 20 different wines on five state-of-the-art wine dispensing kiosks from Napa Technology that “allow the customers to try before they buy,” says owner and operator Robert Morgan. Each is controlled by smart cards that allow customers up to 10 half-ounce tastes. “These machines are the only ones on the North Shore,” says Morgan, “and allow the customer to compare different styles in a range of prices.”

Kathleen Erickson, “The Wine PhD,” is the co-owner and resident wine expert. “Our goal is to introduce the community to an extensive variety of hard to find, unique, small-production wines at a great value,” Erickson says. She is certified sommelier with a highly educated palate allowing her to relate easily to a wide variety of wine preferences. “A good sommelier is like a coach,” says Erickson, “she has to be able to scout out good wines and match them with the buyer’s individual taste.”

Krista Julian is Savour’s “Cheese Wiz.” Julian is a trained chef who interned at the highly respected Formaggio Kitchen in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Julian concentrates on specialty cheeses and meats, complimenting the wine expertise at Savour.

Savour invites the community to come in and try the new sampling kiosks and our unique selection of wines, cheeses, and specialty foods such as Trupiano sausage and homemade pastas. Savour is open seven days a week allowing everyone to try before you buy.

Savour Wine and Cheese was founded in 2010 as a family business. It is our goal to enrich the wine-buyers experience with education and personal attention. Savour is on the forefront of the wine industry on the North Shore of Massachusetts with a knowledgeable staff, wine-tasting machines, and a unique variety of wines. Try before you buy!

In Memorium – Harriet Webster

Logo B&W

harriet

It is with immense sadness that I to inform you that Harriet Webster, our Executive Director, died yesterday of complications from myelodysplastic syndrome.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her husband Charlie, her sons David, Matt and Ben and all of her family during this difficult time.

In the fall of 2001, when it was clear that she was not going to be our next

Mayor, I went to her with a job offer and the concept of a maritime center at Harbor Loop. In early 2002 Harriet agreed to join us, and nothing changed the course of events more than her decision. For almost ten years Harriet was the rock that anchored what has become the Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center. Right from the start Harriet was the person to go to for almost every detail of operations from when the tent would go up to negotiating a complicated loan with Mass Development. As one of the people who worked closest with her I watched as the Center grew and she stepped up and met every challenge with enthusiasm and the talent to ensure that it would be done well. Harriet Webster was a one-of-a-kind person who made the Heritage Center a reality by sheer dint of her will.

A group of board members and staff met this morning to try and figure what to do next. The idea of writing a job description to cover her position was discarded as impossible. Harriet’s unique abilities will never be replaced in any one individual. It was fate that brought us together ten years ago and now it will be our job to carry on without her if for no other reason, because of her.

Later in the summer there will be a celebration of her life at the Heritage Center. I will make sure everyone is notified.

Sincerely,

geoff

Geoffrey H. Richon, President
