Uhmmmm The World’s Greatest Lobster Roll Just Got Even Better By Subtraction. You Heard Me- Subtraction.

2012-09-08 19.47.10

You’ve heard me rail on about the world’s greatest lobster roll for four years now.

We’ve dismantled countless frou frou high brow chefs and food bloggers who couldn’t leave perfection alone and had to go and mess up the perfect lobster roll with such atrocious ingredients as paprika, celery, lettuce, relish onion, pickles, avocado and such ridiculous platforms for rolls such as French baguette rolls and anadama bread.

Yu can read about all those abortions these dopes tried to pass off as lobster rolls here-

Bastardized Lobster Roll on Tap Today At Gloucester Gourmet

But what I’m about to tell you is going to turn a lot of what I’m saying on it’s head I guess.  Or another way to look at it is actually more accurate in that as I’ve told you from the beginning- that simplicity and not overthinking the lobster roll and it’s perfection is the way to go so simplifying in the way I’m going to explain actually falls right inline with what I’ve been saying.

Night before last the Mrs asks me to bring home some lobster so she can make lobster rolls.  She tells me she wants to try something different than her traditional recipe.

I brought home 5 lbs of medium shell lobster and she made two lobster rolls based off her original recipe-

Ingredients For The Worlds Greatest Lobster Roll

Posted on April 28, 2008 by Joey C

Ingredients For The Worlds Greatest Lobster Roll, originally uploaded by captjoe06.

Has to be Cains mayo, and hot dog rolls so you can grill them to a golden brown with the unsalted butter.

Notice there is no lettuce, paprika, celery or any other filler. If anything else appears in your lobster roll, you have an inferior lobster roll.

steam the lobsters and shuck the meat

tear the meat into 1/2 inch chunks or so and mix with cains mayo

refrigerate

once lobster and mayo is chilled, butter each side of cheap hot dog rolls (the kind you tear apart)

you do not want to use any goddamn baguette or crusty overpowering roll

you want white bread tear apart soft hot dog rolls

once you butter the sides of the hot dog rolls with SALTED butter you pan brown the roll so its warm and golden brown

just barely browned but the roll should still be very soft

then load up your cool lobster/mayo filling into the warm soft buttery roll and you have yourself the perfect lobster roll

note- NO  LETTUCE- NO  CELERY-NO  PAPRIKA- NO FANCY CRUSTY FRENCH ROLL

I’m here to tell you that there is an upgrade to this and it is by simplifying.

Leave out the mayo and serve with hot drawn salted butter drizzled over the top of the cooked lobster meat inside the grilled buttered bun.

It actually intensifies the taste of the lobster instead of masking a bit of it with the mayo.

It’s now the official recipe of the World’s Greatest Lobster Roll.

Craig and Helen Whitney Have Some Nice Things To Say

My wife and I really enjoyed last night’s Nights on the Neck at the Rocky Neck Art Colony and noted to a couple of artists that, after growing up and living on the North Shore our whole lives, we have never been to Rocky Neck before. Gotta be among the North Shore’s best kept secrets! So as one artist suggested, we found and will now read GMG.

We especially enjoyed listening to the Julie Dukas Jazz Trio at the Madfish Wharf (also mojitos at the Madfish Grille). We remarked that they should have their CDs for sale, and were amazed to find online this am that they apparently don’t have any CDs. Too bad as we would love to buy them!

Great place and great program last night overall.

What Kind Of Human Being Does This To A Bicyclist?

Newton cyclist’s ‘dooring’ allegation sparks debate about police response

Posted by Deidre Fernandes September 7

A Newton police officer’s response to a biking incident earlier this week has triggered a firestorm of criticism from cyclists and spurred the Newton Police Department to take a closer look at the case.

It all happened during Molly Schaeffer’s usual commute home from work this past Tuesday. Schaeffer, a software management consultant and grandmother of two, said she rides her bike to work daily.

But as she traveled down Beacon Street toward Hammond Street, she said, an old Mercedes pulled up in front of her. While the car was moving, according to Schaeffer, one of the passengers on her side opened the door and yelled “doored.”

Click here for the rest of the story on Boston.com

Those of you who read GMG know of my disdain for bicyclists who ride two abreast and don’t allow you to pass them safely (not informed and courteous bicyclists, but the ones who think they own the road and that they are training for the Tour De France)

But this trend of opening up doors in front of bikers intentionally is disturbing regardless of how out to lunch the biker may be.  Hopefully they get to the bottom of the trend and force these offenders to do some serious road safety training or pull their license and force the motorists to ride a bike to work for a month or two and see what the bicyclist has to deal with.

Corliss Family Fundraiser

A friend of mine, Wayne Corliss, has been diagnosed with a terminal form of Cancer. A bunch of friends are joining forces and (struggling) are putting on a Fundraiser for Wayne and his wife, Dianne. Can you help us spread the word?

It will be held at the Cruiseport Gloucester on Wed. the 12th of September from 7-11pm. The evening includes: Food, Music (Major Nelson and the Screamin’ Jeanies) Silent Auction, Chinese Auction, Dancing and a cash bar. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased at the door or at these locations: Cape Ann Travel Services @ 978-282-8216    NorthShore Veterinary Hospital @ 978-283-0214     Putnam Veterinary Clinic @ 978-887-3836    Cape Ann Veterinary Hospital @ 978-283-3238

Monetary donations & auction items are gratefully accepted!

ALL proceeds to benefit Wayne & Dianne Corliss

I have know Wayne for over ten years…he has a very special place in my heart. We all know what the outcome for him is. It’s very upsetting for me as well as others around him. (not to mention Wayne) We are all trying to stay optimistic and are gathering to help them out financially…Wayne has been out of work for months and Dianne has taken alot of time off to care for him. There is nothing more we can do…the battle itself is his & his alone.

If you can get this information out on Goodmorning Gloucester, I think it will reach out to lots of folks who would want to pitch in, but are unaware of Waynes struggle.

You can reach me by Email or my Cell- 978-423-9819

How can you take pictures of galaxies and comets without owning a
camera or a telescope?
Long-time GAAC member Gary Meehan has been taking photos of the night
sky using remote, robotic telescopes located out in the Sacramento
Mountains of southern New Mexico for a couple of years now. He’s
imaged comets, emission nebulae, star clusters and galaxies, using
none of his own equipment other than a computer.
At the September 14 GAAC meeting, he’ll explain the advantages of
taking this approach, and explain how you can do this too.
He’ll give a quick overview of the New Mexico facility, and show how
to go about planning an imaging session, including the need to use
different sorts of tools to monitor the remote weather conditions, and
demonstrate an imaging session. If time permits, Gary will show you
how to go about forming a final color picture from a series of images
taken through several filters.
GAAC meets at 8:00 pm on the second Friday of every month, at St Paul
Lutheran Church in Lanesville. We’re online at http://www.gaac.us ,

Gloucester MA Fish Landings August 20, 1917- Over 5 Million Pounds. Aug 21, 2012 Gloucester MA 97,300 Pounds. Less Than 2% of the landings in 1917 were landed in 2012

Less Than 2% of groundfish landings in 1917 were landed in 2012 on the same day yet we have a call for more subsidized on the taxpayers back commercial dockage while there’s another $100 Million Dollar buyout of Gloucester Commercial Fishing Boats and a DPA that strangles any reasonable investment in our waterfront unless you are so deep pocketed that you can fight the obstructionists who still think it’s 1917 every step of their way through the permitting process.
Brilliant.

Are You Backing Up Your Digital Life? I Just Bought This 2TB External Drive For a Steal.

Here’s the link to this crazy good deal

My last 500GB external drive filled up about a year ago and I was searching for a larger external hard drive to save all those photos, videos and music that you see on the blog but the prices were insane.  The reason was because of the Earthquakes in Japan had knocked all these manufacturing plants offline.  now that they are back operational the costs for safeguarding your data against failure has never been cheaper.

And when you think about those precious photos of your children or grandchildren or those vacations to special places that you took and have saved on your computer how can you not get on it and back up your digital life.  I was naked for the past year without having the past year’s data backed up.  Not any more.

I highly suggest you get one of these external hard drives and set up your computer to automatically back up your essential files.  Think about your baby or grandbaby’s first steps in video.  Can you honestly say that $120.33 is too much to pay to insure that?

Anyway, prices have come down.  Your computer WILL fail eventually. They all do.  Back it up or lose life most precious moments, the choice is up to you.

HISTORIC GLOUCESTER CHURCH IS GETTING A LIFT!

For the first time in its history spanning more than two centuries, Gloucester’s historic Universalist Meeting House will be able to welcome visitors with physical handicaps to its many civic and musical events as well as to its services starting later this fall.
The Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, which was founded in 1779 as the first Universalist church in America, is currently installing platform-lift elevators connecting all three levels of the church. Handicapped-accessible lavatories are also being built.
The project is being supported in part by generous private donors and a grant from the City of Gloucester Community Preservation Committee and the City Council, recognizing the importance of this iconic building to the community.

In addition, to help see the project through to completion, the church will be conducting an online Internet auction, called “Reaching for the Stars,” featuring restaurant deals, vacation opportunities, entertainment, art, gift items, personal services, and more.
The auction is for 10 days only, beginning Sept 20 and ending Sept. 30. Bidding is open to the public.  Bidders may visit http://www.gloucesteruu.org for details and a direct link.
The 206-year-old Meeting House is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a popular venue for concerts, lectures and civic events because of its excellent acoustics and large seating capacity.
Upcoming events at the church include sea chantey concerts on Saturday, Sept. 22, by two local groups, Baggywrinkle and Three Sheets to the Wind, as part of the Captains Courageous Festival, and the Cape Ann Forum lecture series beginning Sunday, Sept. 23.
Also, on Sunday, Oct. 28, the Boston Symphony Orchestra Chamber Concert Series will make its only North Shore appearance this season at the church. Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance from the Boston Symphony Orchestra (www.bso.org).
Visitors also will be welcome for tours of the church and talks about its history during the Essex National Heritage Area’s annual Trails & Sails weekend, Friday through Sunday, Sept. 21, 22 and 23. Tours will be at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Gloucester Resident’s designs win $15,000 Sapi: Ideas that Matter grant to help Kestrel Educational Adventures, a Gloucester nonprofit organization

Sappi Fine Paper North America announced today the 13 grant recipients for its 13th annual Ideas that Matter program, the industry’s highly respected grant program aimed at helping designers create and implement print projects for charitable causes. Among the lists of recipients is Gordon College Creative Director and Program Coordinator for Return Design, Tim Ferguson Sauder for the LOOKLOOK campaign with Gloucester’s Kestrel Educational Adventures.  Both Ferguson Sauder, of Lanesville, and Kestrel Educational Adventures are working to improve science education through an exciting new educational project.

LOOKLOOK is a personal project started by Fergsuon Sauder which currently includes a set of animal trading cards and an accompanying research journal. After establishing the main design of the cards and the style of illustration he enlisted the help of Return Design alums and later Return Design itself to help in the ongoing production of the cards and journal. Return Design is assisting in the production of the card and journal designs and is being awarded the Sappi:Ideas That Matter grant in the amount of $15,000 to pay for the production of a set of cards and journals to be distributed to North Shore schools through Kestrel, a local non-profit.

Since 1999, Sappi’s Ideas that Matter program has awarded over $12 million worldwide in grants to designers around the globe to support their work for nonprofit programs and organizations. This year’s winning projects reflect the on-going commitment in the design community to utilize design in combination with innovative thinking to solve social problems. Grantees submitted outstanding proposals outlining their ideas, creative execution and their unique ability to instill positive social,
cultural or environmental change.
"Being awarded the Sappi grant is incredibly exciting for us," said Fergsuon Sauder after learning of today’s Sappi announcment. "It not only confirms the quality of work and ideas that are happening in Return Design but it also gives us the opportunity to more effectively support our local school systems through good design. Gordon College has from our inception been a huge support to our ideas and program – its great to now see that support mirrored by the broader design community."

FergusonSauderRDstudio

Return Design is a graphic design studio located on the campus of Gordon College comprised of college students who work to deliver design solutions to nonprofit and art-related organizations. With the support of Return Design alums and a number of outside partners Return Design helps people who are doing important things more effectively serve their clientele.
"We’re committed to using design as an agent of change for the better, whether that’s supporting a non-profit or developing a system from scratch like this one," said Fergsuon-Sauder, who founded the program in 2004 while serving on the faculty at Gordon College. "We hope this project will instill in students across the North Shore a knowledge and understanding of the animals around them that translates into an ever increasingly sustainable and respectful approach to their world."
The selected Sappi proposals were determined by an independent judging panel of leaders, all widely recognized for their forward-thinking commitment to design for social good, from the design profession.

“Sappi started the Ideas that Matter program because we wanted to give back in a way that we felt could make a real and lasting impact,” said Patti Groh, Marketing Director, Sappi Fine Paper North America. “After 13 years, we are proud to see this legacy continue and to be able to recognize the critical role that good design plays in inspiring people to take action.”
