Abraham Lincoln Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

September 21, 2012

“Tact is the ability to describe others as they see themselves."

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)

The 16th president of the United States was well known for his quick wit and aphorisms. His political accomplishments, the preservation of the Union and the ending of slavery, have become almost mythic parts of American history. Even a cursory look at the man behind the myths reveals a towering intellect coupled with an astute political sense. Lincoln, a moderate Republican, purposefully constructed his cabinet of men who most often disagreed with him, and each other, in order that he received perspectives different from his own, and steered a course between extremes toward the goals he believed were right for the country. Assassinated at the close of the Civil War, Lincoln left behind a rich legacy of thoughtful and often self-deprecating quotes including: “It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt."

John Caggiano paints for Pathways " A Place at the Table" Event.

Hello Joey

John Caggiano is one of 16 Cape Ann artists who are painting parsons tables to be auctioned at the
“A Place At The Table” gala celebration to benefit Pathways children on Friday, November 9th at Cruiseport Gloucester.

I am  volunteer working on the publicity committee for this event.   I am hoping you will be interested in posting the different tables on Good Morning Gloucester.   This would be a wonderful way to get some exposure for the artists, Pathways, and our event.

Thank you so much.

Residents Reminded to be Vigilant about Protecting Themselves from Mosquitoes

Residents Reminded to Be Vigilant about Protecting Themselves from Mosquitoes
Cape Ann, Massachusetts.
In light of the growing number of animal and human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) the State Public Health Department increased the risk level in all communities from low to moderate.  Moderate means that multiple cases of human disease caused by EEE or WNV are moderately likely at this time. For more information on how risk level is determined visit:  http://westnile.ashtonweb.com/index.asp

image
Some communities in which mosquito samples have tested positive for WNV or EEE have made the decision to conduct spraying of pesticide to reduce the risk to people.  The aim of spraying is to lower the overall mosquito population and reduce numbers of infected mosquitoes in the affected areas.
Mosquito spraying reduces, but cannot completely eliminate, infected mosquitoes. Therefore, it cannot eliminate the threat of mosquito-borne illness. That’s why it is very important for residents to take personal precautions against mosquito bites.
Peak times for mosquito activity are from dusk to dawn. Reduce outdoor activity during this time if possible. Use mosquito repellent any time you are outdoors, but especially during peak times. And remember, being outside even a short time can be long enough to get a mosquito bite. If weather permits, wear long-sleeves, long pants and socks. Use mosquito netting on baby carriages or play yards when your baby is outdoors.
Keep mosquitoes out of your house by making sure screens are repaired and tightly attached to doors and windows. Prevent mosquitoes from breeding by removing standing water from places like wading pools, recycle bins, and flower pots, and changing water in birdbath, wading pools or other long term containers at least every 4 days.   Mosquitoes can begin to grow in any puddle or standing water that lasts for more than four days. Water in one old tire can breed thousands of mosquitoes.
You can learn more about how to protect yourself at www.mass.gov/dph/wnv or any of the Cape Ann town websites.
