Sem Sutter Represents! in Friedrichstadt Germany

I’m an avid follower of GMG.  Here’s a pic of me representing in Friedrichstadt, a North German port city that was active in the 17th c. and is now quiet and picturesque.

We Got Germany Baby!  Thanks Sem!

As an aside- this may be the first time I’ve ever heard the name “Sem”.

I wonder if Sem’s partner when first laying eyes on Sem way back in the day said “Oh I gotta get me Sem o’ dat!”

Charles Bukowski Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

November 1, 2012

“An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way.”

Charles Bukowski (1920-1994)

image

Born Heinrich Carl Bukowski in Germany after the First World War, Bukowski’s American father moved the family to California in 1923. He studied writing and literature briefly at Los Angeles City College before moving to New York. Arrested for draft evasion in 1944, he failed a psychological evaluation and was listed 4F. His writing career did not flower until the mid-fifties, when he began to publish his hundreds of poems and short stories, and his six novels, of which Ham on Rye is the best known. He wrote the script for the semi-autobiographical film “Barfly” which detailed his nearly life-long alcoholism and depression and their effect on his writing. Bukowski wasinfamous for his confrontational literary readings, which bordered on performance art, described by some as uninhibited, but by others as drunken and boorish.

Look for Scott Memhard, Cape Pond Ice and Capt. Tom Testeverde of the FV Midnight Sun on TV in an ad for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of MA.

It’s him; there are clips of other members, but he’s the first one! … And from Scott himself:

"yes, we’re included in some testimonial ad spots for BCBS of Massachusetts, since they’re celebrating 75 years, and Cape Pond Ice has been in business serving the Gloucester fishing fleet for 164 years, and a member subscriber with BCBC for over 30 years.

Their agency approached us about participating and, after dragging our feet, concerned about the disruption of filming during our busy summer ice season, we eventually agreed. They spent a day mid-August with a very professional 30-person crew here filming and interviewing at the Ice Company, as well as with Capt. Tom Testeverde on the FV Midnight Sun, at our wharf.  Jonathan Bekemeier from Picture Park is the Director, and Partners & Simons is the ad agency.

At least its not a political ad, thank God – but I apologize in advance for barging into people’s homes on their TVs !"

On Saturday evening, October 29th Holy Family parish hosted an Italian Night fit for a community embedded with a love of Food and community.  Along with good food and good company they were entertained and kicked up their heals with the legendary artists Barry Mooney and friends.  Decorations were the wonderful and unique Aprons donned by the Guild family members, grandmothers, and mothers from years past that were used for shy children to hid behind, a perspiring brow, gathered vegetables from the garden, a pot holder or tissue to wipe away the tears Of a crying child.

Pictured serving our guests are Alison Aiello and John Aiello.

You Gotta Read This From A Former Crewmember Of The Bounty Written Just Days After The HMS Bounty Went Down

Falling Overboard

November 2, 2012 | by Robin Beth Schaer

Illustration by Madzia Bryll, a fellow member of the crew.

At first, I couldn’t sleep on the ship. At night, bunked beneath the waterline, I put my hand against the wooden hull and imagined dark water on the other side pressing back. I lay awake holding my breath, picturing the route I would swim through a maze of cabins and hatches if the ship went down. In port, Bounty had looked tremendous: one hundred and eighty feet long, three masts stretching a hundred feet into the sky, and a thousand square yards of canvas sails. But underway, with ocean spreading toward horizon in every direction, she was small, and inside her I was even smaller.

I had lost my job and my marriage when I saw Bounty for the first time. I wanted to stowaway, cast off, and leave the ruins of my life behind—and Bounty let me. Yet I left far more than grief on land; what mattered at home—education, achievements, appearance—was irrelevant at sea. It was unsettling to abandon all that I thought defined me. I sat in the galley with the other deckhands and wondered what they understood from my face. I was uncertain of what remained.

To leave the shore required surrender; I had to give myself over to the ship and the journey, wherever it led and whatever it revealed. I fell into the rhythms of standing watch and eating meals. Soon even the ship’s deep rolls and strange music of creaking timbers became familiar. I learned lines and sails, practiced emergency drills, and studied the compass and charts; I tarred, painted, spliced, caulked, and I finally slept. I slept deeply, trusting when I closed my eyes others were awake, on watch, keeping me safe, just as I had done for them. We were profoundly dependent on each other.

Aldro T. Hibbard, N.A. (1886 – 1972) Retrospective at Rockport Art Association

October 6 – November 11, 2012

Largest Hibbard exhibition ever, featuring 119 original works of the Rockport Art Association founder. Show will be accompanied by Month-Long Roster of Events and Educational Programs.

Rockport Art Association (RAA) announces that it will be holding a retrospective exhibition featuring over 100 works of its founder, Aldro T. Hibbard, N.A., one of Rockport’s most acclaimed plein air landscape painters and a pillar of “The Rockport School” of artists. The Hibbard retrospective contains 114 works, many of which have not previously been exhibited. The exhibition, which opens with a Preview Party on Friday evening, October 5th, 6:00-8:00 pm., will run through Sunday, November 11, 2012. In celebration of the retrospective, the RAA has also published a book on Hibbard’s life and work entitled, “A. T. Hibbard, N. A.: American Master” by Judith A. Curtis, a well-known Cape Ann art historian. Additionally, many lectures and gallery walks will be held throughout the exhibition’s duration.

Hibbard is considered by many to be the top American landscape painter. Recalling his old colleague, Rockport artist Tom Nicholas, N. A., explained, “He painted anatomically, structurally, you could sense the anatomy of the landscape. … He was a master of aerial perspective.”

Aldro T. Hibbard was born August 25, 1886 in Falmouth, MA, and died in Rockport, MA, in 1972, where he had resided since 1920. He was a founding member of Rockport Art Association (MA) as well as director of the Rockport Summer School of Drawing and Painting (1921-1928), later renamed The Hibbard School of Painting. He studied with Ernest L. Major and Joseph R. DeCamp at the Massachusetts Normal Art School (1906-1909), and with Edmund C. Tarbell, Frank W. Benson, and Philip L. Hale at Boston’s Museum School (1909-1913). In recognition of his talent, the School awarded Hibbard a Paige Traveling Scholarship (1913-1915) to study abroad. Upon his return, he taught charcoal drawing at Boston University and later settled in Rockport, where he was drawn to the art community and landscape. Hibbard was a member of many American art organizations, including the Rockport Art Association, the North Shore Arts Association, The Guild of Boston Artists, and the National Academy of Design, of which he was elected a full member in 1934. Hibbard influenced many Rockport artists including Emile Gruppé, Tom Nicholas, Paul Strisik and Roger Curtis.

Savour Wine and Cheese Reopening! Thursday, November 15

They’ve come a long way from when we did our interview with John Lamirande in the building back on February 17th-

SAVOUR WINE AND CHEESE – BEACH GOURMET (Almost There)!

I am writing to let you all of you know that the long-awaited reopening of Savour Wine and Cheese, and Beach Gourmet Catering is upon us. With the recent event of Hurricane Sandy and some glitches in getting our construction loan, we are slightly behind schedule, but doing well. We plan to reopen for business on Friday November 16 at 11 a.m. (We will be open 7 days a week, Monday – Saturday, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday, from noon until 6 p.m). We are planning our opening party for Thursday evening, November 15 at 6:30 p.m. We will send an invitation a few days before, so you will know for sure, and can R.S.V.P. First priority will go to Keystone Investors, followed by Wine Club Members. But – it is a big place now, and everyone is welcome.

The construction has come along beautifully, as many of you have seen when walking by. We have a stunning hardwood white oak floor, a state-of-the-art modern kitchen, an elegant chef’s table dining area, and a pristine new cheese counter and deli. Right now, we are putting on finishing touches, including shelving for wine and a center for the new wine machines. Once that is all finished, we have many permits and licenses (from occupancy to food service) to obtain from the city before we can open. But, we have had unprecedented support from all city agencies, particularly the building inspectors, Bill and Greg who have worked closely with us to keep us on track. We also were successful in rezoning the building to its intended purpose as a commercial property, thanks to the cooperative efforts of many on the planning committees and city council. So, we are almost ready to go!

WINE MACHINES ARE HERE!

In addition to working on the building, I have been travelling the country, trying out new products and of course, tasting wine. A recent highlight was a trip to New York for a tasting of several hundred grower champagnes and Italian wines at the Tribeca Grill. Prior to that, I was in Chicago, visiting the president of Metropolis coffee. Here is a photo of me "cupping," which is a ritual much like wine tasting. On a trip to Napa, where I tasted some incredible wines, I discovered Cowgirl Creamery, and Red Hawk cheese (a gorgeous washed rind cheese, similar to Brie, but with a rind that is 100% edible, and delicious). While eating at RPM restaurant in Chicago, I discovered a cold-pressed coffee called "Pure Black," which made a memorable Affogato dessert.  I drink it daily as an afternoon pick-me-up. It comes in a dark bottle, like beer, and is brewed cold, for 16 hours in steel tanks. Most people do not realize that coffee is the number one source of antioxidants in the American diet. So, you can grab a cold bottle anytime, as an alternative to an afternoon soda, or when you are too busy to sit down for a hot coffee or tea (healthy and invigorating)! Finally, we have been working with Ariston to bring in bulk Olive Oil and Balsamic vinegar, you can purchase and refill whenever needed. So, in addition to wine, cheese, olives, breads, and specialty meats, we will have many items for you to "try before you buy."
