Paul, an American and Israeli citizen, has lived in Israel, for the past 35 years. He and his wife, Brenda, have spent many summers in Rockport. Paul, 72, has been a hobbyist since he was a teenager. He started building model ships, including the U.S.S. Constitution and the Titanic. He is perhaps best known to Cape Ann folk for his model of the Andrea Gail that debuted two years ago at the Cape Ann Museum.

Shipbuilding is not new to Paul. In the 1970s, he was the chief engineer of a yacht-building company in Korea. While there, he built a ketch, the Brenda Lynn. After a nearly five-year journey around the world with his wife and daughters, they ended up in Israel, where they settled. Paul who has an electrical engineering degree from Penn State and a master’s degree in computer science from UCLA, founded companies there, mostly start-ups producing electronic medical equipment. He loves building accurate model ships and feels it is not that much different from building real ones as he’s done both.

Paul will give us insights into what is involved in model making by discussing the many aspects of building the model, including design considerations and the fabrication of some of the components.

Lanesville Art Show Special Event: Unveiling of the Lanesville Quilt

On Friday, August 9, at 4:30 PM, a special preview event will precede the official opening of the annual Art in Lanesville show at the Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan Street, Gloucester.

We will unveil the newest addition to the Gloucester Council on Aging Neighborhood of Quilts project—the Lanesville quilt. This vibrant piece of fiber art showcases many iconic images of the Lanesville village and represents the collaborative work of many Gloucester seniors.

Participants from the Rose Baker Senior Center, who created the quilt under the artistic direction of artist Juni Van Dyke, will attend the event and will be available to discuss the project.

Mayor Carolyn Kirk will also attend as a special guest to welcome the artists. Please join us to celebrate this community event.

Cape Ann resident L.M. Vincent, author of IN SEARCH OF MOTIF NO. 1, will be reading from and signing copies of his latest book, SAVING DR. BLOCK, at Manchester-by-the-Book, 27 Union Street, Manchester-by-the-Sea, on August 9, at 8 PM. A departure from his previous non-fiction history of Rockport’s famed fish shack–which was a finalist for the 2011 Non-fiction Book of the Year by the Massachusetts Center for the Book–SAVING DR. BLOCK is comic fiction, a coming-of-age caper that takes place in Kansas City in 1963.

     Twelve-year-old Howard Block has a lot on his mind. If being bullied in gym class every Tuesday and Thursday, an overprotective mother, and the stress of preparing for his upcoming Bar Mitzvah weren’t enough, Howard’s father has just been named in a fraudulent medical malpractice suit. Inspired by a new movie sensation, the British secret agent James Bond, Howard recruits best friends Mike Hunsacker and Irwin “Stinky” Devinki for a crack undercover team to thwart the psychiatrist villain Chadwick Huntley and his patient/accomplice Hannah Stringer. Like 007, Howard learns there’s always a female involved, which doesn’t make his mission to save Dr. Block any easier. This touching and often hilarious book follows Howard’s journey to self-discovery and manhood during an era of cultural divides between Jew and Gentile, black and white, and even father and son.

      A native of Kansas City and former editor of the Harvard Lampoon, L.M. Vincent has published both fiction and non-fiction, and his plays have been produced regionally and Off-Off-Broadway. A former member of the Kansas City Ballet Company, he was one of the earliest investigators of eating disorders and menstrual problems in classical ballet dancers, and is considered a pioneer in the field of Dance Medicine. He currently is on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School. He and his wife have two grown daughters and divide their time between Cape Ann and Seattle, WA.
