Oceanside Hotel Menu September 1, 1947 Magnolia MA

Good Evening Joey,

I was going through some papers today and found a dinner menu from the Oceanside Hotel

or the night of September 1, 1947.  My mother, who was a 17 year old nanny,  told me she had saved it from her trip there with the Drucker family for whom she worked.  When I googled the hotel, I found your blog.

I have attached a scan of it.  If this is something that you would like for your collection, I would be happy to forward it.  My mother had kept it folded all these years, so it shows some wear.  I would like very much to give it to someone to whom it means more, either yourself or anyone else, as she passed years ago and it does not hold much sentimental meaning to me.

Hoping you may want it,

Sharon Viola

Theatre in the Pines Prepares for spring performance

Nan Webber, Director, Theatre in The Pines, announced recently that The Heiress, by Ruth & Augusus Goetz will be the spring program in May.

The Heiress, takes place in New York in the 1850’s and the story tells of a shy and plain young girl , Catherine Sloper who falls desperately in love with a delightful young fortune hunter. Catherine lacks the worldliness from realizing the young man proposing to her is not entirely drawn to her by her charm.

Performance of The Heiress will take place on May 15, 16, 17 & 18. at Sprian Hall, located on the corner of Broadway and School Street in Rockport.

Plans are also underway for the September performance of Romeo & Juliet in September at the Shlin Liu Performance Center, 37 Main Street, Rockport.

Further details regarding both performance will be shared as these date near.

Hi Joey,

I’m excited to share the news that a free community sing-a-long to celebrate the life, spirit and music of Pete Seeger has been planned for Friday, February 7 at 7:00 PM at the Lanesville Community Center.
Pete Seeger, one of America’s best-loved folksingers, an untiring activist, environmentalist, and an inspiration to many, passed away on January 27th, 2014.
This will be a participatory evening.  Though a number of seasoned Cape Ann folk performers (roster is still growing!) will attend prepared to lead songs, all are welcome to bring acoustic instruments and a song or story to share.  Song sheets will be available.

We hope the 7:00 start time will encourage families with young children to attend.  It’s fine to bring snacks or non-alcoholic drinks to share if so desired. Spread the word! Bring friends! Bring family! And remember, there is no charge for admission.

Daniel Webster Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

“A strong conviction that something must be done is the parent of many bad measures.”

Daniel Webster (1782 – 1852)

A New Hampshire native and graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and Dartmouth College, Webster, a member of the Whig Party, served New Hampshire in the House of Representatives and Massachusetts in the Senate during the turbulent years leading up to the Civil War. He worked tirelessly to preserve the Union, opposing efforts at secession by New England during the War of 1812, and by the South in the 1840’s and 50’s. Although known best for his fiery and (by today’s standards) flowery oratory in the Senate, he also served as Secretary of State in the Harrison, Tyler, and Fillmore administrations. Among his many accomplishments, it was Webster who filed legislation introducing pre-paid self-adhesive postage stamps in 1847; his portrait has appeared on Postal Service stamps 11 times, more than most presidents.

Charlie’s Place Odor Of Smoke Reported

Hi Joey
On Friday 1/31/14 an odor of smoke in the building was reported at
Charlie’s Place restaurant on Bass Ave. about 5:00 pm. The latter was
put up to check the HVAC system on the roof as well as checking the
building. I don’t think a cause was found. Recall was sounded soon
after.

NORTH SHORE UNITED WAY GRANTS $5,000 TO OLD FARM ROCKPORT

The Board of Directors of the North Shore United Way (NSUW) have voted to award a $5,000 Discretionary Grant to support the outside deck project at the Old Farm in Rockport, a Cognitive Living and Learning Center for survivors of brain injury, expected to open this spring. When completed, Old Farm Rockport will offer eight units of affordable housing for moderately or severely disabled survivors of traumatic brain injury.  NSUW funding will ensure the deck will be 100% handicap accessible, which is an important part of ensuring future residents enjoy a rich quality of life.

The North Shore United Way awards one-time Discretionary Grants up to $5,000 to launch new or innovative programs on the North Shore or for agencies with emergency needs.  Margo Casey, Executive Director of the NSUW, said “We are very pleased to lend support to this important program.  It not only furthers our goal of developing more affordable housing, but it also opens a supportive community to the growing population of adults with traumatic brain injuries. We were moved to put our support behind a project founded and supported by the family and friends of local residents whose lives have been forever impacted by a traumatic brain injury.”

Peter Noonan, Executive Director, Old Farm Rockport, explains that the deck, “adds a great final touch to the project.”  Peter Robbins, Board Chairman, adds, “Old Farm Rockport couldn’t be more pleased and grateful to partner with and receive North Shore United Way’s support, affording us the opportunity to build a place for the residents to enjoy the seaside sun, air and access to outdoor activities.”

The North Shore United Way invests almost $1M each year in projects that transform lives and improve communities now and for future generations.  NSUW is all about local impact by rigorously vetting and supporting 25 causes that serve children, families, and seniors in eight North Shore communities, including Beverly, Hamilton, Wenham, Ipswich, Essex, Manchester, Gloucester and Rockport.  For more information about funded projects and how to get involved, visit nsuw.org or call 978-922-3966.

Hi Joey,

I hope this e-mail finds you well. I am not sure if you remember me but we worked together on a project for “Taste of the Times” with Jackson Cannon at my home. My Aunt Terri Gallo and Uncle Gianni Gallo had also worked on the piece. I am writing to you today in the hopes that you will take a few sentences from your blog to help us better reach this community. I am so lucky to be part of the All Star Foundation for UCD. The Urea cycle disorder is a genetic disorder caused by a mutation that results in a deficiency of one of the six enzymes in the urea cycle. These enzymes are responsible for removing ammonia from the blood stream. The urea cycle involves a series of biochemical steps in which nitrogen, a waste product of protein metabolism, is removed from the blood and converted to a compound called urea in the blood. Normally, the urea is transferred into the urine and removed from the body. In urea cycle disorders, the nitrogen accumulates in the form of ammonia, a highly toxic substance, resulting in hyperammonemia (elevated blood ammonia). Ammonia then reaches the brain through the blood, where it can cause irreversible brain damage, coma and/or death. We are on our 4th annual All Star Benefit and would love it if you could mention the event and help us spread awareness. I have attached the sponsor letter and a brief history of Mary Grace (Sanfilippo) Vestal and Michael Vestal. They are both amazing parents who fight every day for this cause and their children. Michael and Marisa both have UCD, older sister Mia is a spunky, healthy, loving big sister. Michael and Grace are both from Gloucester as well as their Families. They now live in wilmington. Grace takes care of Michael and Marisa full time so she can not work. They hold this benefit to help spread awareness, talk about new born screening, and hopefully someday have a cure! They worked in clinical trials for years and last year were able to have a new drug approved by the FDA. Lets help them make this bigger and better!

Thank you for your time!

As many of you know the kids go to New York to get their medicine. To this point the medicine HPN 100 has been in clinical  trials. We received this email Friday that we wanted to share with everyone. This is a hugh step in the standard of care for kids with born with a UCD’s. The Allstar Foundation can take pride in knowing that we took part in making this happen. Our money helped support the fellowships for the physicians collecting the data for this trail. Thank you so much for all your hard work and support of your special cause.

Hi Everyone,

I am so excited to report that the FDA approved Ravicti (clinical trials were performed under the name HPN-100) this morning for ages 2 years and older.  This is an incredible victory for UCD patients and families!  It has been a 10-year battle, but it has been worth every moment. Thank you to everyone for your support, and for all the patients and families who participated in the clinical trials.  For more information from FDA about the approval:

Simple keychain whistle.  Seeing as if you’re living on the North Shore you’ll be living with Coywolf, I figured why not?  Cheap.

The experts on the PBS “Meet The Coywolf” program suggested that if you encounter Coywolf in your yard, you ought to haze them and make them feel uncomfortable.

You can get them on Amazon for like next to nothing.

Paper vs Plastic: Some Facts

Bob Velo from Crosbys Market stated in the Gloucester Daily Times article that the cost for plastic bags are 3 cents vs 10 cents for paper bags.

Tax data cast doubt on claims about declining use of plastic bags in D.C.

By Mike DeBonis

The District’s four-year-old tax on disposable bags has been a rousing success, leading to a 60 percent drop in household bag use and many fewer plastic bags littering city streets. Such are the claims of city environmental officials, citing surveys done by an independent research firm last year.

City revenue figures, meanwhile, show no continuing decrease in the use of disposable bags. In fact, bag tax collections have proven remarkably stable since the nickel-per-bag fee debuted in January 2010.

Paper Bags VS: Plastic Bags – Real Numbers

Are plastic bags getting a bad reputation?

Look in almost any newspaper and more than likely you will find an article about local government that is considering to somehow regulate plastic bags. It is becoming easy to hate the “pitiful” plastic bag!

Paper vs. Plastic:

Articles usually leave out the facts as well as the side by side comparison. A truthful look at what is required to produce 1000 plastic bags versus 1000 similar paper bags. If the biased media would present the facts, as discerning people we could make educated and wise decisions.

If all the shoppers using plastic bags last year had used paper bags instead, they would have increased the amount of solid waste by over 100 million tons and taken up 7 times more space in landfills.

Paper VS Plastic Diagram

Lindle Willnow submits a great link with more facts from the National Cooperative Grocers Association-

Here is a reference that shows that neither option is that good but plastic seems to have a smaller, though longer lasting impact (https://www.ncga.coop/newsroom/paper-or-plastic). That said, I haven’t got on board with bringing my own.

Joey notes-

The 979 cubic inches for 1000 plastic bags vs  7188 cubic inches for paper bags does not take into account that after a year or two in a landfill that paper bag will be significantly less from decomposing and the plastic bag will be around forever.

“To Light the Fires”
A Guest Sermon by Lise Breen

Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church

Sunday, February 9th, 10AM

Join Gloucester UU parishioners on Sunday, February 9th for a guest sermon by Lise Breen: To Light the Fires: A Sketch of The Daltons, Black Citizens of Gloucester and the World”

Lise will remind us of Gloucester’s indisputable, tangled history with slavery with some accounts from Gloucester. One former enslaved African American, Gloucester Dalton, joined other Universalists at the laying of the cornerstone for the Gloucester church. Lise will introduce other Dalton family members and discuss their roles and identities as slaves, as fugitives and, finally, as extraordinary political activists. She hopes to meet with you afterwards to answer questions and discuss plans for an African American Heritage Trail.

*****

About Lise Breen: While selecting content for the Gloucester HarborWalk, Lise came across evidence of our African American history. She hopes to garner support for an African American Heritage Trail to reveal the extent of slavery here and, more happily, recognize those who worked so hard to end it. Lise worked as a Research Associate with The Brooklyn Museum and, more recently, as a consultant documenting accounts from the rapidly changing fishing industry. She is a member of the Sargent House Board and the Gloucester Harbortown Cultural District Steering Committee.

Meet The Coywolf on PBS

So if you match up the pictures of the dead animal I found on Moorland Road back in 2010- it looks just like these are in fact Coywolves or Eastern Coyote that we have around here-

Gloucester At Dawn Poor Dead Coyote On Moorland Road 4:50AM 5/22/10

Posted on May 22, 2010 by

This poor coyote must have gotten hit by a vehicle within the past few hours as the blood was still vibrant red.

RIP Mr Coyote.  Hope your life on the island was a good one.

There must have been quite an impact to make his eye bug out like that on one side of his head.
I wonder if this is the same coyote I came face to face with on the Good Harbor Beach Footbridge in these pictures back on July 5th,2008-

Drone Video from the rock that completely destroyed a house

One minute your milking goats and yodeling your ass off and the next minute you have a big ass boulder pounding through your house making it look like a bunch of match sticks.

I guess the question I would ask is this-

If you buy a house under a mountain that has rock formations that look like they’re ready to let go at any time are you really surprised when your shit gets wiped out?

Is this not the equivalent of the nouveau riche that buy shacks on Plum Island, tear them down and build mansions and then cry for Federal assistance when they get wiped out by the latest storm as if there hadn’t been decades of evidence of massive beach erosion?
