Local Fishing Legend Al Williams Has Fished Cape Ann Waters For 47 Years And Never Caught A Bonita…

Until today.   This is a fish they catch South of the Cape.   I’ve never seen one landed around here.  If you don’t think global warming is real,  you’re bananas.

Quote of the week from Greg Bover

Dear Joey,

I’m on vacation and will be off the coast of Maine somewhere for the next couple of weeks. Perhaps you’d like to run the following “classics” from my collection, some from nearly four years ago when we started doing this. Thanks buddy, I hope you are doing well.

G

God, grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Reinhold Niebuhr  1892-1971

A theologian claimed as an influence by Martin Luther King, Madeline Albright, John McCain, Hilary Clinton, and Barack Obama, Niebuhr was the principal proponent of Christian Realism and was alternately attacked and supported by both liberals and conservatives during his most active period of ministry between the First and Second World Wars. A major component of his work centers on the idea that pride is the root of much of the evil in the world. His books include The Children of Light and the Children of Darkness (1944) and The Irony of American History, (1952). He was awarded the Medal of Freedom in 1964.

Greg Bover

“Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not.”

Thomas Huxley (1825-1895)

A self-taught anatomist and comparative biologist, Huxley was ship’s surgeon on a very early voyage to New Guinea and Australia. He was a vociferous champion of Darwin and invented the word “agnostic” to describe his own thoughts about a supreme being. It was Huxley who first theorized that birds evolved from dinosaurs and who was the primary proponent of scientific education in 19th century Britain. A lifelong humanist and prolific essayist, Huxley’s grandsons include Sir Julian Huxley, first director of UNESCO, and Aldous Huxley, author of Doors of Perception and Brave New World.

Greg Bover

“Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.”

Frank Zappa (1940-1993)

A native of Baltimore whose father worked for the military, Zappa recorded more than 60 albums as a soloist and as the founder and leader of The Mothers of Invention. Often miscast as a novelty musician, he wrote complex, difficult to perform classical, jazz, rock, fusion and other music that cannot be contained in any genre. His iconoclastic approach to life often put him at odds with the established order and organized religion, but he was an ardent supporter of free speech and auto-didacticism. Cited as an influence by such diverse musicians as Pierre Boulez, Paul McCartney and George Clinton, Zappa was a multiple Grammy Award winner and was invited to the newly independent Czechoslovakia by Vaclav Havel to advise on cultural matters.

At the time of his death it was rumored he was contemplating a move to Montana to raise dental floss.

Hi Joey,

This was a very busy week for Gloucester’s Chantey singers, Three Sheets to the Wind.   Monday night at our weekly community sing at the Dog Bar, we were joined by the cast of the off Broadway musical, Putnam County Spelling Bee, now in it’s 25th week performing in Hartford, CT.   We were  delighted to several numbers by Nathan and his troupe.   Sorry for the poor quality photo – had to use my cell phone for that one.

Tuesday we headed to New Bedford where we were invited to perform a 2 hour concert at the Custom House in honor of the historic whaleship, Charles W. Morgan’s return to New Bedford, making it’s firsts voyage in 100 years.  The folks at the Whaling Museum, the crew of the Charles W Morgan, and the Schooner Adventure’s sister ship the Ernestina, welcomed us with tours.  We were thrilledto sing for the crowds waiting in line for a tour of the Morgan,

and on the Morgan.  The owner and staff at the Irish pub, welcomed us for lunch and diner and encouraged us to sing for the patrons.   The New Bedford waterfront is beautiful, and welcoming, and well worth the trip.   Many thanks to Peter Souza for orchestrating the day for us!

Join us some Monday night at the Dog Bar for a community sing, 6-9 p.m., or  check us out at our next concert Thurs. July 10 at 5 p.m. at the park on Rocky Neck.

City Announces Riptide Advisory Due to Hurricane
Beach Safety Plan in effect on Saturday July 5th and Sunday July 6th
(Gloucester, MA) – The City of Gloucester today announced that dangerous conditions, including rip tides and strong surf undertow, are expected this weekend at Good Harbor and Wingaersheek Beaches in Gloucester. To ensure the well-being of guests, a Beach Safety Plan will be in effect for Saturday and Sunday, July 5th and 6th at all City beaches as Hurricane Arthur passes out to sea to the east of Cape Ann.
Under the Beach Safety Plan, lifeguards have authority to close all or portions of the beaches at their discretion. In sections that are open, swimmers must refrain from going into the water above the waist. Gloucester police officers will be on beach patrol throughout the weekend to enforce the lifeguard orders.
While Gloucester Fire and Police department personnel will stand ready to respond to any water-related emergencies, all life safety officials urge beach goers to immediately obey lifeguard instructions.
All beach goers are reminded that lifeguards are not on duty after 5 p.m. Residents and visitors are urged to stay out of the water when lifeguards

Ringo and Company Prep the Stage For Tonight’s Concert On The Boulevard

DSC06362

Vickie and Peter Van Ness report-

The Gloucester Fireworks Committee just cancelled tomorrow’s fireworks due to weather predictions (see Gloucester Times article here), but the Horribles Parade and free concert are still on in the hopes that weather will clear up.

Music featuring Cape Ann Big Band and The Runaround Sound will begin after the parade passes by the Boulevard stage (probably around 7:00pm) and continue until 11:00pm with a spectacular laser light show somewhere in between.

So come out and enjoy the parade and free concert.  Let’s show all those people visiting from out of town that bad weather predictions aren’t enough to spoil our fun!

Raw Weather Data from National Weather Service

Bill O’Connor submits-

Hi Joey,

With Tropical Storm/maybe Hurricane Arthur approaching, I thought GMG readers might be interested in some of the raw data available from the National Weather Service.  Most weather related information that is available on the internet and in the media is rooted in information from the NWS, because they aggregate collected weather data from all over the world and share it publicly as a gavernment service. NWS runs the National Hurricane Center, a site that serves up raw unadulterated weather data related to Hurricanes and Tropical Storms that’s free from any commentary.   This is a great tool if you are into tracking the weather as it happens directly from the source.

When you land on the NHC homepage, you will be presented with a map that has each active tropical storm’s and hurricane’s current position on the map.  Choose the storm you want to track and click on it [on the map].  Clicking the storm will bring you to a page that has all kinds of data on the storm, with maps that will show storm surge predictions, surface wind info, wind speed probability, history and all kinds of other data.  Keep an eye out for the Warnings/Cone Interactive Map, it’s the familiar map with the projected storm path, but includes coastal warning information as well.

· Here’s a link for the overview page for Arthur: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at1.shtml?5-daynl#contents

· Here’s a link to the large tracking map for Arthur: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at1.shtml?gm_track?large#contents

These pages use aggregated data to generate the maps and reports available, but if you’re really geeky, I would suggest a visit to the Observations – Radial Search page.  There you can input the center of your search area [latitude & longitude] and the distance and time period you would like to search in all directions from that point.  The search result will spit out a table of weather observations from the given time range. Data sources would include buoy data, C-MAN station data, Drifting Buoys, Ships and other sources (like lighthouses). Weather information included in the raw data is wind speed and direction, peak gusts, wave height, wave frequency and wave energy, barometric pressure (and trend) at sea level, air temperature, sea surface water temp , visibility, tide, water depth of reporting station, and some stations will even report swell activity.

· Radial Search Page for Arthur: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/radial_search.php?storm=at1

· Radial Search Page with blank search parameters: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/radial_search.php

Enjoy!
