Have You Opened Your Recent Electricity Bill and Seen The Energy Efficiency Charge? Update 15

Just a reminder with these extreme cold temperatures. When you open this month’s insane electric bill, take note of that energy efficiency charge and ask yourself if you feel like continuing to not take advantage of the free savings available to you.

Here’s a rerun of update 5 in case you didn’t take advantage then, when temp were in the 50. The ongoing series of finding ways to cut Home Energy Costs and Be More Comfortable In Your Own Home Part 5

In this video you’ll see the things Kevin From Next Step did to inspect and replace inefficient things in my mom’s house.

If ever there has been something I stand behind as being 100% no-brainer and you’d have to be crazy to not take advantage of it’s this.  Not only is it incredibly interesting, but the immediate money in your pocket saving and free lightbulbs that look exactly like the old inefficient ones that they are replacing. To know all the places where you are losing heat so you can take steps to correct those things.  If you want to have insulation work done or weather sealing to have Mass Save pay for 75% of THAT. To know that you can elect to have any of it done or not and to know you are already paying for it on your electric bill in the line item “Energy Efficiency Charge” and then not take advantage of it.  You would have to say to yourself “That person is crazy to not want to do this.”

I was blown away with what my mom got, how interesting it was and how much I learned about energy savings and teh construction of my mom’s house.

If you want to take advantage of awesome programs available to you right now for zero out of pocket then watch the video and sign up for your own energy efficiency assessment and get a ton of free lightbulbs, power strips, electronic thermostats that will turn down the heat at night or while you’re at work automatically, and efficient showerheads.

totalcostzeroOh, I Forgot To Mention The Free Electronic Thermostats That They Will Provide and Install Free Of Charge.  My Mom has nine of the standard dial thermostats that they are going to come in and replace free of charge with programmable ones that will turn them down at night automatically and when you are off to work and then turn them back up just before you wake or come home from work for even more savings.  They are going to replace and install 9 of them for a total savings of $1062. and that is not to mention any of the monthly savings she will receive from not having to go around and turn down the thermostats herself every day.  No frickin brainer city.  A grand+ in savings for zero dollars.

REWARD for Missing Dog (Essex MA) and Missing Coat (Cape Ann, MA)

Hi Joey, et al. Not sure if GMG has a ‘lost and found’ post, but it seems it is worth trying, so here goes….

REWARD for Missing Dog (Essex MA) and Missing Coat (Cape Ann, MA)

  • Cynthia’s Dog ‘Opie’ missing since January 6th.    Many are out looking for Cynthia’s dog. She lives in Essex and helps many a stray.
  • Knee-Length Women’s Winter Coat; Black with Faux Fur-lined hood; last seen at the MAC Fitness Center on 12/6.

The coat went missing during the first week of December, and may have been taken home as ‘mistaken identity,’ but without identifiers for the owner…, has not been returned. d

Maybe FOB can Help.  REWARD for both!    Thanks!  Karen Pischke

Alex Gold Not Too Happy About The Dog Poop Situation At Burnham Field

Wanna go for a walk in Burnham Field, this is what you get (see poop shoe pic below). I want to thank all the lazy inconsiderate people who let their dogs take dumps all along the new paths and don’t bother picking it up.  The walkways are literally littered with dog feces. This is a disgrace and makes one wonder if people don’t respect the places where they live do they respect anything.
Upset resident,
Alex

Candlemas Celebration at St. Johns Episcopal Church

Children’s Candlemas Celebration at St. John’s
Interested in what’s happening in the children and youth program at St. John’s?
St. John’s Episcopal Church school will be offering workshops related to Candlemas.  For two Sundays, (February 1st and February 8th) all children are invited to take part in this celebration by learning how to make beeswax candles and participate in the feast of the Presentation of the Lord at the Temple (40 days after his birth). The first Sunday (10:15 – 11:15am), participants will learn the story of Simeon and Anna (Luke 2:22 – 40) as they make their candles. The following Sunday (10:15 – 11:15am), children will complete their candles; learn the song of Simeon and help lead the Procession of Candlemas with their lighted candles, as part of the church service.  The procession will end with the children arriving in the church, joining their parents. This is a two-session commitment celebrating Candlemas and a great way to check out the children’s program at St. John’s. Just show up and enjoy this celebration!
All children ages 3- 18 (of any denomination) are invited to participate and celebrate.

GHS Wrestling Team and Coach Kirk’s Special Recognition

image

Hello,

I’m sure you get many requests for posts, but I’d love to let people know about the GHS wrestling team. They had their home opener tonight against Salem High School and they crushed it! They won 48 to 24 with 8 pins; an impressive feat for a team that is only in it’s second year!

I’d also love it if Coach Kirk Benson got special recognition.

At tonight’s meet there was a dedication of the new wrestling mat that Coach Kirk Benson and his family bought with money from his parents estate. Kirk’s parents have both passed away, but were very involved in their community and were all about supporting youth in whatever they were interested in whether it be sports, arts, travel etc.

I’ve attached a picture of the team on the new mat and a picture of Kirk and Carolyn Benson (there is also a non cropped picture of the team on the mat).

Thanks for your consideration!

Imagine you’re exploring the deep sea in a submarine.  What strange sights and sea creatures do you see?  Children will create their own paper portholes, submarine windows to underwater scenes.  We’ll touch and hold live sea creatures from Gloucester Harbor and then create our own deep sea animals for the portholes.   Through a story about Jacques Cousteau, we’ll learn how scuba divers explore the ocean.

Wednesday, February 18 – Polar Explorers and Icy Experiments
What did explorers find on Arctic and Antarctic expeditions?  What kinds of creatures have adapted to freezing temperatures? Students will learn all about ice through a variety of icy experiments, challenges, and projects.  Using a variety of ice shapes, build an ice tower as high as you can.  Paint a snowy scene with saltwater and watch crystals appear.  Children are encouraged to stay afterwards to watch The Blue Planet: Frozen Seas, a nature documentary about polar sea creatures.
Thursday, February 19 – Mapping the Deep
The deep sea is no easy place to explore.  What strange creatures lurk in the depths?  How can we learn about the shape of the seafloor?  Through fun activities, we’ll learn all about the various ways to explore the ocean floor.  We’ll build a deep sea model in a box, complete with creatures and shipwrecks.  Afterwards, we’ll measure ocean depth and surprising seafloor features without even looking in the box!  Children are encouraged to stay afterwards to watch The Blue Planet: The Deep, a nature documentary about deep sea animals.

Electricity Savings Update 16: Solar Opportunities and A Solar Home Evaluation At Brian O’Connor’s

Home Solar Evaluation At Brian O’Connor’s East Gloucester House
As part of our ongoing series since National Grid went up 37% on Elecricity prices we interviewed Kevin Prickett who came out to East Gloucester to do a Home Solar Evaluation. According to the Kevin, not only do you save money, but if your home qualifies, you actually will get back more than you put in. Watch the video to listen to how it works and if you are interested sign up for a Free Evaluation for yourself. The way he explained it is that Deval Patrick signed something into action that calls for National Grid to have a certain percentage of homes using renewable energy by a certain date. If they don’t reach that quota, they will be fined three times the cost to the Government. Currently from what he says there are less than 2% of households taking advantage of the program so there is this huge pool of money available for the smart people who make the call and take advantage. Our goal is to educate our readership and to get as many of us to be inside of that 2% of the smart people who are getting something back for the money they are putting in.

Update: just got a text from Brian O’Connor who just told me that if his house qualifies, not only would he have no electric bill but he would get a check in the mail.
