GMG Housekeeping
Just back from the last vacation days of the year. Hitting the ground running with a little site redesign to try to improve load times and make things less messy up at the top.
First things first, I had to let go of the slider up at the top.
I was in love with the idea of the slider and actually paid for a custom WordPress design which allowed for it but after having it for about a year I just can’t deny that it is distracting and added to load times.
So poof, it’s gone.
Secondly I changed the theme to allow for a full width scalable format meaning that our contributors can now post larger photos and videos and the blog will detect what size your monitor is and adjust accordingly.
Thirdly, the Navigation buttons are now implemented and stickied at the top of the blog which should allow you to find your way around much more easily. All thanks for our awesome new navigation buttons go to James at Cape Ann Giclee who made them for us.
So in the past couple months, I launched www.capeanneats.com, www.capeannhome.wordpress.com, www.capeannwellness.com, built a new GMG Android App, implemented James’s awesome Cape Ann Arts Calendar, cleaned up the navigation with James’ help, got rid of the slider to improve load times, and increased the blog from a fixed width to a larger format scalable width to display photos and videos larger.
Rest on our laurels after 7 and a half years? Aw, Hellll Nooo.
Keep on pushing baby!
and guess what? we’ve got some more stuff up our sleeve ![]()

Jim Dowd Pitches The Common Crow IndiGoGo Campaign
Jo-E!
What’s up, neighbor?
Last time I was on the podcast we discussed how obnoxious all the Kickstarter/Gofundme/Indigogo/gimmiemoneydotcom.com action has gotten. Lately it does seem like everyone with a life goal expects somebody else to pay for it. We also railed on established businesses using Kickstarter in lieu of just getting a bank loan like normal people.
On that last point I’m going to walk back a little as part of the team helping the Common Crow move out to Eastern Ave. Kate and Pat (the owners) are taking a ginormous leap, investing literally a million dollars in partnership with Cape Ann Savings, the city’s Small Business Development arm and Stan Poole the owner/builder of the site and his crew. When they move out there next month the store will employ over 40 people full-time with bennies. And it’s a truly homegrown local business; they literally started in the corner of the Glass Sailboat on Duncan St. 15 years ago.
The Common Crow is going to crowdfund as part of their financing mix in order to pay for a few things they might otherwise put off at the outset and the rewards are pretty sweet if you are into what they have to offer. Stuff like bottomless cups of coffee, gift bags full of product, charcuterie boards (full disclosure: I had no idea what the crap that was a week ago), original pieces from local artists and and of course T-shirts and tote bags because that is apparently the law or something.
Folks should check it out and throw some support their way. It’s truly a local success story.
Later!
–Jim

Standing Proud Together
Full Week of Educational, Cultural and Community Events Mark Fourth Annual LGBT and Allied Pride Celebration this June
The fourth annual North Shore Pride Parade and Festival will take place Saturday, June 20, 2015, in Salem, MA. The theme of this year’s celebration, voted on by members of the community, is Standing Proud Together.
New this year is a week long calendar of educational, cultural and community events leading up to the parade and festival, including a free “lunch and learn” on Monday, June 15, focused on how to make cities and towns more welcoming for LGBT people.
“The mission of North Shore Pride has always been to create unity in our community,” said president and founder Hope Watt-Bucci. “I’m proud to be expanding our educational mission this year by providing an opportunity for local officials and members of the public to hear from dedicated advocates like Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll and Mason Dunn of the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition about steps we can all take to make our North Shore cities and towns more unified and welcoming for all.”
“With a full week of events including a movie night, interfaith service and more, there’s something for everyone to participate in,” Watt-Bucci added, “It takes every one of us to make change in our communities, and this year we truly are standing proud together.”
The Grand Marshal of the 2015 North Shore Pride Parade is OUTVETS, a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the contributions and sacrifices of LGBTQ Veterans, active service members, and their families. OUTVETS made history earlier this year as the first LGBT organization to officially march openly in the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
This year’s entertainment lineup at the festival on the Salem Common includes headliners XELLE (pronounced “XL”). XELLE’s original, high energy songs sound like a delicious mix of Katy Perry, ABBA and The Spice Girls, and they’ve headlined pride festivals in Chicago, San Francisco, New York and more.
XELLE promotes a strong message of self-acceptance and empowerment. They released the song Red Flag as a powerful human rights anthem, in conjunction with the #iRaiseARedFlag online protest to inspire everyone who cares about equality to make their views known and raise their voice against oppression.
Also in our lineup: Adrienne Mack Davis as part of her world tour, local favorites, The DeJas, Rolla, Big Ol’ Dirty Bucket, Sarah & The Wild Versatile, Jenn Lombari and Lucky United.
North Shore Pride is a 100% volunteer run non-profit organization. The annual North Shore Pride Parade, Festival and year-round community events are made possible by the work of countless volunteers, individual donations and the support of community sponsors.
A full calendar of 2015 North Shore Pride events follows below. Complete details, including how to register to march in the parade, be a vendor at the festival, sponsor or volunteer, can be found at www.northshorepride.org.

My name is Lin Chandler and I am the owner of 222 Arts & Wellness Center
at 222 Eastern Ave. in Gloucester.
I am so excited to spend the evening with all of you this Thursday, May
21st. I am writing to let you know a little bit about us over at 222
Arts & Wellness Center, in the event that you were “on the fence” as to
whether this evening is what you really need. I say “YES IT IS!” and let
me explain why. We are a caring, nurturing community of lightworkers.
We are privileged to have a wide variety of clients with different lives
and avocations, but they all have one thing in common. They are
wondering, “Am I the best person that I am supposed to be, and is my
life the very best it can be?”
We’re all different – maybe meditation will help some of you tune in,
where others may need crystals and singing bowls. Maybe breathing
exercises and songs will help you.
This Thursday, please come and safely experience some of these
therapeutic practices to see what supports you the best. Because your
higher source energy also has a plan for you and knows what is the very
best for you, we are more than happy to use cards, pendulums, crystals,
essential oils, etc., to get those very important questions answered for
you.
Come enjoy this peaceful evening of spiritual tapas with us. Sample
therapeutic practices that interest you. I promise you will be uplifted,
confident and more joyful when the evening is done. Amazing sharing,
caring spirit community, great food, friends, a walking labyrinth,
bonfire and even some songs…it doesn’t get any better than this!
The event is $30.00.
SPACE IS LIMITED AND FILLING UP! YOU MUST RSVP TO THIS EVENT!
Thank you!

2015 Essex River Race Results
Results for this year’s Essex River Race. The
race happened yesterday, May 16. It’s an approximately 5 1/2 mile race
down the Essex River, around Cross Island by Conomo Point, and back to
Rt. 133 at the Essex Ship Building Museum. The conditions were awesome,
temps in the low 70’s, sea breeze, overcast with just a hint of a
sprinkle now and again.
Chris Chappell, you can post these on the web site. I am quite
confident of the results as the timing crew was impeccable. So I am
also sending this out to the press.
Wonderful day, excellent event. Thanks to all!
Peace, Dave

Nothing Gold Can Stay- From Ted Reed
Hi Joey–
Robert Frost’s poem about spring came to mind on a recent walk on the Boulevard, looking toward Stage Fort Park:
Nothing Gold Can Stay
Nature’s first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Gloucester High School Selected for MassBioEd BioTeach Program
The Massachusetts Biotechnology Education Foundation (MassBioEd) has selected Gloucester High School (GHS) as one of 10 schools awarded a BioTeach program grant in the 2015-2016 school year.
GHS was also awarded a BioTeach grant in 2009 and was recognized with MassBioEd’s prestigious Joshua Boger Innovative School of the Year Award in 2013 for inspiring students to explore life sciences careers through progressive biotechnology education and exemplary science career programming.
Through this year’s BioTeach grant, MassBioEd will provide GHS with professional development and mentoring for teachers; updated, inquiry-based biotechnology curricula; access to student career exploration experiences; and up to $12,000 for materials and equipment for school labs.
“We are honored at Gloucester High School to have MassBioEd’s support through equipment and training and look forward to providing exciting, inquiry-based lab exercises,” said Eric Leigh, Biology Teacher and BioTeach Coordinator at GHS.
“Gloucester High School is honored and enthusiastic about being awarded a BioTeach grant, said Robert Gallinelli, Dean of Students at GHS. “This grant will assist us in inspiring our students to pursue careers and educational opportunities in life sciences and biotechnology. Our teachers are eager to enrich our student’s lab experience with modern equipment and training.”
Funding for this year’s BioTeach cohort comes from a $139,999 grant awarded through the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) STEM Equipment and Supplies Grant Program.
“We are thrilled to bring our BioTeach program into additional schools for the 2015-2016 school year,” said Lance Hartford, Executive Director of MassBioEd. “By providing Massachusetts students with lab experiences in high schools across the state, we hope to inspire students to pursue educational opportunities and careers in the life sciences and biotechnology industry.”
“Investing in training the next generation of life sciences workers is a critical part of the Center’s mission,” said Susan Windham-Bannister, Ph.D., President & CEO of the MLSC. “We want to create an interest in STEM careers among students all across the state, and at all levels.
