Discover the History of Cape Ann Granite! Local author releases exciting new title featuring stunning, vintage images

image

Telling a story in pictures is Cape Ann Granite, the newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series. The book by local author Paul St. Germain is set to release on July 20, 2015. The book boasts over 200 vintage images, many of which have never been published, and showcases memories of days gone by.
The granite industry began on Cape Ann with the first sale of a piece of Rockport granite, for use as a millstone, to a farmer in Newburyport in 1800. The industry would grow to include more than 60 quarries and operations around the cape, becoming the second-largest economic force in the area behind fishing. Hundreds were employed as quarrymen, stonecutters, paving cutters, and finishers. Cape Ann was particularly well fitted for the pursuit of granite as its rocky hills and shores afforded a comparatively inexhaustible source of supply, and its splendid shipping facilities gave the advantage of quick and economical transportation to market by sea and land. The industry eventually declined, and by 1930, most quarries had gone out of business because of labor strikes and low demand. Today, most of these quarries are filled with rainwater and springwater, and many are used as reservoirs for the surrounding communities.
The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today. Arcadia is proud to play a part in the preservation of local heritage, making history available to all.
Available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at (888)-313-2665 or online.

Al Bezanson submits-

Gloucester’s Chet Brigham has completed a splendid biography of our 121-year-old Official State Ship.  The lives (yes lives, not life) of the extraordinary Ernestina-Morrissey are chronicled in 276 pages.  The author sorted through mountains of material to give us this entertaining story.  He will introduce the book at the Cape Ann Museum at 3:00 PM Saturday, June 13th.

From the schooner’s website:  “ The Ernestina-Morrissey’s story is one of wide-ranging maritime adventures, lived by a remarkable cast of captains, crews and voyagers. Sailing to the Grand Banks from Gloucester for cod in the 1890s … voyaging to the Arctic every year for almost two decades on scientific expeditions … serving under both the U.S. Army and Navy in the Arctic during World War II … crossing the Atlantic a dozen times as a packet ship, linking Cape Verdean-Americans in New England with family members on their home islands … back in America under sail out of New Bedford, educating boatloads of school children on the wonders of their ocean environment.

In Phoenix of the Seas, Chester Brigham writes of the indomitable spirit of the Ernestina-Morrissey. Of the men and women who have commanded her: Gloucester fishing captains Bill and Clayton Morrissey, Arctic navigator Bob Bartlett, Henrique Mendes on Cape Verde, round-the-world captain Dan Moreland. Of the lives the vessel has touched: dory-trawling fishermen on the Grand Banks, hardy field scientists, Inuit hunters, GIs at remote weather stations, Atlantic islanders, volunteers who have sacrificed much for love of the ship.

She has been written off as doomed time and again. But now, this Phoenix ship will rise from the ashes once again! Thanks to a combination of private and state funding, the Ernestina-Morrissey is to be completely restored – after which, based at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, she will set sail in her next, yet-to-be-decided incarnation.

Gloucester author Chester Brigham has written three other books on Gloucester’s maritime history: On Opposite Tacks (2011), Gloucester’s Bargain with the Sea (2007) and The Stream I Go A-Fishing In (2003). Phoenix of the Seas. Whale’s Jaw Publishing. Hardcover. 296 pages. 42 illustrations. ISBN 978-0-9740778-4-0”

2nd annual Cape Ann Kids PMC ride for cancer

Hello,

I am hoping you will consider posting our flyer on your Facebook page. We are looking for local support to help get the word out about our ride to fight cancer.

We are the kids branch of the Pan Mass Challenge and every thing we earn goes directly to Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund.

We started last year after my daughter, Alexis Morris age 13 then, wanted to find a way to channel her mourning over the loss of her grandfather and subsequently her uncle 6 weeks later, to lung cancer. It was unexpected and left a gaping hole on her life. It was her idea to start our own kids PMC event, as one did not yet exist on the North Shore. Last year, our flagship event of 12 kids raised over $6000.00! We’re hoping to sign up 20 kids to ride this year and surpass last year’s money earned. Alexis, now 14, has already raised over $1000.00 on her own.

In order to do this, we need to reach more people; kids who want to ride, adults who want to volunteer and donate and businesses to sponsor us.

We’re hoping a post or two from you before our event might reach just one more family interested in helping in the fight and perhaps, empower their child(ren) as it has done for ours. Here is our website for more information: http://www.kids.pmc.org/capeann.aspx and our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Capeannkidspmc

Thank you for your consideration.

All my best,

Jen Morris

Look and look again: The HarborWalk Fishermen’s Wharf exhibit is deeply channeled, joining discussion with fine art, business and community, wharf and sea.

Cat Ryan submits-

Keep in mind that the installation is a work-in-progress. Look for updates and notices of an official unveiling!

Look and look again: The spiffed up HarborWalk Fishermen’s Wharf exhibit is deeply channeled–joining fine art and discussion, business and community, wharf and sea. Keep in mind that the installation is a work-in-progress. Look for updates and notices of an official unveiling!

Back in 2010, detailed information panels along Fishermen’s Wharf were created by Mark McDonough, Vito Giacalone, Peter Prybot and Joey Ciaramitaro. The panels were installed along the Giacalone’s wall, between businesses and at the water’s edge. The content, collaborative spirit and contemporary reporting impacted the HarborWalk design. Cambridge Seven Associates, architects for the HarborWalk, were fans. Connections were encouraged. Two HarborWalk story posts (formerly described as Story Moments) were sited at each end: Fishing Today HarborWalk Story Post #5 and Lobstering HarborWalk Story Post #4. Pretty much everybody hoped the signs would be cared for and this outdoor channel would remain.

unnamed2

Thanks to bright sunshine, the panels along Fishermen’s Wharf deteriorated. Some of the fabulous content disappeared. Guess what? Signs are temporary and can be re-visited.

IMG_7978

New signs were designed, content edited and updated, and the display taken to a new level with support of the City. Matt Coogan, Senior Planner Community Development, directed the project, working with the original authors and team. Cambridge Seven Associates designed the panels. The addition of fine art photography, drawings and design spiffed up the already museum quality display. Fine art by Joey Ciaramitaro, Marty Luster, Paul Frontiero and others are something else to celebrate this week!

Saunter by. More stories to come. Worth repeating: the exhibit is still a work in progress. It’s not 100% live…yet!

Cooking Ocean Perch (Redfish To the locals) On The Weber Smokey Joe Charcoal Grill

What’s on the grill at the dock today you ask? Smile

Set Up Smokey Joe For Grilling With Direct Heat using the Weber RapidFire Chimney To Get The Cowboy Lump Charcoal Heated Up. Fill Chimney 2/3 of the way with lump. Wait til coals on top turn white and dump them out evenly along the bottom of the grill.

20150609_114249-01

Redfish is very similar to red snapper only smaller and less oily, more like a mild flaky white fillet. Gut the Redfish and trim as much of the fins and tails as you would like. I don’t go crazy because we’re basically gonna devour it with our hands here at the dock. Then perform three slices along the body to get seasoning in there just deep enough that you’re almost at the center bone.

IMG_20150609_113218-01

Rub the fish down with some olive oil all over. Slice some onions and lemons and stuff the body cavity and then apply your favorite fish rub.

20150609_115308-01

Arrange the fish on the grill and keep the top and bottom vents wide open.

20150609_115613-01

Be very careful on the turns. I used a spatula to make sure the entire fish is separated from the grill before trying to perform the turn. The first turn should be performed about 15-18 minutes after the fish hits the grates. You can tell once the flesh turns white that it’s ready to flip.

2015-06-09 12.09.39

After the first turn the other side should take another 15 minutes or so. again when removing from the grill gently make sure the entire fish is separated from the grill so it won’t fall apart when plating.

Delicious!
