Church Street Press is making dog tags from old typewriter keys and is currently looking for 15 to 20 people that would be interested in taking part in some end-product testing for these tags.  The testing is centered around the particulars of the type of protective finish that is applied to the tag after it is made.

What you get:  A free tag!  Two actually.  Read on for more info…

What you need to do:  Once you get your tag, provide me with regular updates on its appearance–wear and oxidation–for the next three months. Sending a photo once every couple of weeks is fine.  At the end of the test period, I will select the best finish per the testing results, and you will receive a coupon code for another free tag.

If you are interested in taking part, please send an email to churchstreetpress@gmail.com and I will get back to you.

We Will Miss Palazola’s Sporting Goods In A Huge Way

Throwback post to 2008-

OVERLOOKED GLOUCESTER TREASURES- PALAZOLA’S SPORTING GOODS

Posted on August 7, 2008

Palazola’s Sporting Goods, originally uploaded by captjoe06.

Yesterday I stopped by Palazola’s to visit my buddy Stephanie who happened to be off for the day.

What I didn’t realize because I haven’t been in there for so long is what a local treasure the place is.  In one store you can get sneakers, skates sharpened, bike repair, tennis racket re-strung, custom monogramming, Gloucester Pro baseball caps, customized local sports imprints, and much much much more.  It is amazing how many sporting goods and sporting goods services that they cram under that one roof.

If you haven’t been by in a while, stop by and see just how much they offer.

I had a feeling when I went in to get Matt Johnson’s Gloucester best Bartender Award Engraved and they told me that the engraving equipment had been sold and then just days later bumping into Jack Palazola getting coffee, he gave us the press release about the Bike shop being for sale, that this was afoot.

We are all really going to miss this place.  How quickly they would turn around monogrammed items or iron-on lettering on shirts or if you needed a certain kind of socks, or my favorite boots for work- BOGs.  They seemed to be the one place where you could get it all without having to go to the mall.  Let me say it again- WE WILL ALL MISS PALAZOLA’S SPORTING GOODS TERRIBLY.

Thank you so much to the Palazola family for the incredible service to our community throughout the decades.  There will never be another that could ever fill this kind of family dedicated community service establishment in the sporting goods space like Palazola’s did.

To Jack and Linda you both deserve the very best in life and I hope your days of not having to get up to manage the store are filled with happiness.

Hi Joey.

Tonight we watched this storm from Lobsta Land. We were there for my husband’s annual ‘pre-Blackburn carb-loading meal’ –  shrimp provencal and an Allagash White beer. Great views of this storm as it moved up the Annisquam and over the salt marsh; just missed a photo of an impressive lightening bolt. :O While there met 2 great guys from Ottawa Canada, Chris and Bruce, in town for the Blackburn. Chris told us he was so focused while training in the harbor, he “almost hit one of the tall ships.” From his description, I think it was the Adventure. Whoever she was, the captain had to blow his horn to prevent a collision. Hope to see you at tomorrow’s Blackburn Challenge!

Enjoy.   Karen

Ivana Strong Bracelets

Hi Joey, my wife Amy and I are trying to raise some money for my best friend Daughter. Amy talked to her father Ed Collard and said you may help post this on your site?
Ivana is a 7 month old beautiful baby girl, daughter of Vinny and Giacqueline Parisi.  She has been at Children’s Hospital for just about a month with a weak heart.  Many people in the community have been praying for little Ivana and her family appreciates the thoughts and prayers.  In order to assist with Ivana’s care as well as support the Children’s Hospital, Ivana Strong bracelets have been created and are being sold for $5 each. Ivana is taking baby steps in the right direction but her little heart still has a lot of work to do.  If you would like to purchase an Ivana Strong bracelet, please contact Adam Orlando, via Facebook or at 978-423-0845

Cape Ann artist Wins Magnolia Art Show with Photography

Katherine Richmond, one of four artists exclusively featured at Zinc Gallery in Rocky Neck, recently won the grand prize of “Best in Show”. In addition, she received “Peoples choice award for Best in Show and Best in Photography” for her photograph ‘Hokusai’ pictured above.

This is the only time a photograph has won over an oil painting, watercolor, mixed media, sculpture, and pastels in the 38-year history of the Magnolia Art Show held last week. “It’s a welcoming sign for Gloucester to award a fine art photograph, which has held to more traditional views of art for many years, to other talented local photographers,” said Richmond.

Richmond’s work also hangs at the prestigious 21st Members Juried Show at The Griffin Museum in Winchester now through August 30th.

Paddling on the Annisquam River – exercise, meditation, or social outlet? All of the above!

Exercise and Meditation in Nature on Beautiful Cape Ann.

Paddling the Annisquam – Yesterday I headed out “for a quick paddle before the storm.” Once on the water, my senses were engulfed by the beauty and peacefulness of my surroundings. I began to paddle slower. Getting into a natural rhythm. ‘Meditation in motion’ with each stroke; reflective and introspective. Then, occasionally sprinting for aerobic exercise and interval training, interspersed with moments of meditation. Inhaling deeply, exhaling completely. Fresh salt air filling my lungs felt healing. Gliding alongside the salt marsh I was accompanied by swooping swallows, soaring elegant egrets, and stately cormorants perched on rocks and buoys to dry their wings.

Did you know that in some areas of Japan, Cormorant (umiu) are used for fishing (ukai?) I wonder if any Gloucester fisherman have tried this?

Charity Film Screening to Support Wounded Veterans

CHARITY FILM SCREENING TO SUPPORT WOUNDED VETERANS

Tickets are now on sale for the New England film premiere of “Darkness and Light,” a documentary featuring conversations with eleven wounded veterans, ten Marines and one Soldier, who happens to be Gloucester’s own, Austin Dorr, a Korean War combat veteran.

The film will screen at Rockport Music’s Shalin Liu Performance Center on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 6:30pm and proceeds will benefit wounded veterans via the Semper Fi Fund.  View the trailer and purchase tickets here: http://rockportmusic.org/thi-wernaus-darkness-and-light/

Synopsis:

Rockport’s very own, Thi Linh Wernau, presents the New England premiere screening of her documentary film,Darkness and Light. In the film, Wernau interviews eleven wounded veterans, largely post-9/11 war veterans and Marines, through the lens of her photography series, “You. Are. Beautiful.” – a project celebrating the human spirit and beauty in all people. Themes around darkness and light emerge in these candid, unscripted and conversational interviews, and ultimately, these themes will tie back to one of the project’s main sources of inspiration: love. The audience will learn more about these wounded veterans, and get to know them simply as human beings. The veterans share messages that may help and inspire other injured veterans. By the film’s end, anyone, military or non-military, may discover a new place of understanding of how to find light within the depths of darkness.

Event Program:

6:30 – 7:00 PM: Artist talk

7:00 – 8:45 PM: Movie presentation

8:45 – 10:00 PM: Reception in the 3rd floor Reception Hall

(all movie ticket holders are welcome to attend)

This event is proudly sponsored by Wernau Asset Management.

2015 WINDHOVER ANNOUNCES “QUARRY DANCE 4” at Little Parker Quarry

Off Rowe Avenue in Rockport, MA  01966

Performances are: FRIDAY, JULY 31st at 5:30PM

SATURDAY, AUGUST 1st at 11:00AM & 5:30PM

SUNDAY, AUGUST 2nd at 1:00PM

Windhover Performing Arts Center has presented unforgettable Quarry Dances for the past three years on Cape Ann. The New York City based dance company, Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre, returns again this summer for a residency at Windhover for one week in order to create and choreograph a site specific quarry dance for the public. The quarry dance performances continue to grow in popularity each year.  (see attached flyer)

For Quarry Dance 4, the Dušan Týnek dancers will use the architecture of Little Parker Quarry — its ledges, cliffs, terraces and water — to celebrate this special place. The uniqueness and beauty of the quarry will be embraced and honored as in the previous quarry dances.

Performances are free and open to the public, but donations are welcome. No reservations are required. The performance will last just over one hour.

Du Dance Theatre

There is NO parking on Rowe Avenue or on Drumlin Road. Due to the lack of any available parking at Little Parker Quarry, please take note of these special instructions for parking and shuttle transportation:

Limited parking has been arranged at the Granite Pier on the upper level. Although fees are waived for parking, you must stop at the small parking kiosk and request a Quarry Dance parking pass from the attendant. Please display this parking pass in the front window. Due to the limited space for parking, car pooling is highly suggested.

There will be a six passenger van shuttle available at Granite Pier for $1.00 per person each way for those who do not want to walk. It is about a 15 minute uphill walk from Granite Pier to the Quarry on Rowe Avenue. The shuttle will begin 45 minutes prior to each performance and run continually until the performance starts.  It will return guests back to Granite Pier following the performances. We are requesting that no private vehicles be driven on Rowe Avenue or on Drumlin Road going to the quarry during the shuttle and performance times in order to allow for an unimpeded flow of traffic.

Note: Seating will be on a first-come-first-served basis and chairs will be provided. In addition, people are welcome to bring blankets to sit on, as well bring their own water and soft drinks. Please do be advised that space is limited.

In case of rain, the performance is cancelled.
